“Amazing holiday!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

First of all... Ignore all bad reviews. People clearly had expectations far too high

The hotel is very nice looking. They have a private beach (there is no sand entrance, but a jetty entrance to the sea with steps) but there are sunbeds and a bar. Again, don't let this put you off, it is lovely. There are 3 restaurants, 1 buffet and 2 sit in. 2 out of 3 have outside dining available. There are 5 bars (inc hola beach) and there are a range for both paying and all inclusive customers. It is very clean and the staff and friendly and more than happy to help you out.

I believe the hotel is going to be shutting down soon for a bit of a revamp, but I didn't see a lot that needed to be done. The bathrooms looked a bit tired, but still everything worked and we had a bath/shower so no complaints there. The Spa downstairs was nice, however the jacuzzi wasn't really warm and didn't bubble much, and the hydro pool wasn't working during our stay. However we did pay a bit extra to have some massages and it was well worth it!!

The food that was served at the buffet was really nice! The have a live cooking area, where they will cook fresh just for you for whatever is there for that sitting. Only bad things i could say about the buffet area; The orange drinks in the morning seem to be watered down, the tea made from the machine is awful (please get some teabags) and i think there should be a couple more coffee machines as there was always queues for these

Lots of cats around the area :) I didn't mind too much as I like cats however the staff don't try and move them away and they are at your feel constantly while you eat, so if you are allergic, maybe take some antihistamines

Well worth a trip, and again the staff are lovely. Big shout out to Peter at the front desk and Karen at the lounge bar. They were fantastic!

Room Tip: Get a sea view if you can :)

Arrived at half term. The hotel is perhaps struggling to make the full four stars but a combination of things made an old cynic like me give it a 5 star rating. Every member of staff there went out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide the personal touch. Our holiday started with one of the party leaving a phone on the delivery taxi. Peter on the desk chased the emergency numbers with enthusiasm for us and got the phone back.

The rooms were of a good standard but are being further upgraded this winter. The food was varied and of good quality, the bread excellent. As usual the all inclusive drinks were a bit hit and mix but plenty to go at. The location on the side of the bay is brilliant. It is a somewhat remote from Valetta but when you have seen the built up area of the island you will be pleased to be here! The boats to the Blue Lagoon at 6 euros were outside and the cheapest we was. Visit the neighbouring bays. If you want a laugh, try Popeye village, it is so bad it's great!

The hotel isn't too big that you don't see familiar faces amongst the staff.

Highly recommended

Room Tip: We were on the second floor, which was quiet. Higher numbers are better. Plenty of lift access altho...

We had read up on reviews of this hotel before booking so had a good idea of what to expect with regard to the rooms. As other reviewers had pointed out the rooms were a little dated and required some refurbishment but were very clean and tidy thanks to the hard working maid service.

Our only complaint is with regard to the Airconditioning which did not work in our room or in the restaurant area. Although the fan worked (at least during the day - it appeared to go off completely after 7pm) there was no cooling so you had to put up with hot air being circulated. Our room was on the sunny side of the building overlooking the country and basically heated up like an oven, it was impossible to spend much time inside as it was so uncomfortably hot. At night we had to sleep with the balcony door open to get any cool air at all. As a result we were bitten to death by Mosquito's as we needed to keep the curtains open. We did mention this to the rep the day after we arrived and she said she would see if she could help. There did appear to be a brief spell where it worked properly for a couple of hours after this but not for the rest of the week.

However, the food and service here were very good indeed, friendly staff and choice of restaurants and meals these would match or better any of the cafeteira style food served up on cruise ships. Some of the sweets on offer were 5* quality. We stayed on an all inclusive basis so all local alcoholic drinks and soft drinks, tea, coffee etc. were included in the price.

The pool area always had plenty of loungers available and you could always find a sunny or shady spot to chill out. The hotel has fantastic views across the bay to Comino and Gozo. There isn't much else there, so if you want a quiet not doing a lot type of holiday then this location is good. There is a very good cheap bus service with a stop just up the road with access to all the sights on the island including Valetta which is about an hour away. You may need to change buses for some of the more out of the way places.

We would certainly come back again - if the aircon is working!

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms with country views if the aircon is not working as they will get very hot. Rooms wit...

Dear Frank,

I would like to start off by thanking you for the nice review written above. It is very nice to hear that you have enjoyed our stay with us.
The resort is currently taking part in a 3 year refurbishing process whereas by the year 2015 all the rooms and public areas will be completely refurbished with new bathrooms and upholstery. We are doing this in order to continuously improve our level of product and service and offer good value for money to our guests.
I wish to also thank you for your kind comments about of quality of food and service. It is very nice to hear that our efforts to improve the level of quality offered to guests are being noted.
When it comes to our pool deck, one can say that this one of the main assets of the resorts. Guests can enjoy the outstanding views of Gozo and Comino from our pool deck. The view is stunning and most guests do spend most of their holiday relaxing by the pool or enjoy a cocktail at our own private beach.
Whilst I wish to thank you once again for your comments, I do hope that we will have the pleasure to once again have you as one of our guests at The Riviera Resort & Spa.

My family had another event yesterday which we celebrated at Riviera Hotel after the great success of another event held on 10th May. Special thanks goes to Vince Curmi and his marvellous team who acted all professionally.

Once you do the booking it is a guarantee that you will have the full attention and literally to the full! Besides the excellent service the food is great and to the full expectations.

I would definitely recommend Riviera Hotel for all kind of functions. There are a lot of hotels on the island but literally you can count the good ones and Riviera is one of the best.... well for me the best!

Thanks Vince for making our event a memorable one and looking forward for future collaboration.

Regards,

Rachelle

After previous all inclusive experiences was apprehensive but when arrived was pleasantly surprised.

The Hotel - not the most up to date facilities but the rooms are spacious and clean, the beds are comfortable, there were plenty of sun loungers so you didn't have to do that 'up at the crack of dawn to put down a towel and then go back to bed' game. The hotel was next to the coast and has a little beach over the road. The Spa treatments were very reasonable and 30% of for hotel guests and the massages were amazing!! The staff were ridiculously lovely and helpful, From the reception staff to the restaurant staff and Karen who ran the lounge bar was our favourite but possibly not good for our livers!!! The animation staff however did not seem to own any music that was not at least 30 year old and such entertaining games involved throwing a pen in a bucket and bingo!! The

Food and Drink - having had traumatic previous all inclusive experience I have to say the food was very good!!! They varied the choices every night and if I didn't like anything it was personal preference rather then anything else. There is also an A la Carte restaurant next door which majority of dishes are include in the AI or heavily discounted. The all inclusive drinks were reasonable too, the wine was very drinkable (possibly too much so and this is from a self professed wine snob). The water is included but not to take to your room but don't fill in the mini bar form ---- there is a little kiosk outside of the hotel that sells 5 litre bottles for €2.50.

Location - the hotel is a little bit in the middle of nowhere!! The ferry to Gozo is about a 15 minute walk but nothing else is really in walkable distance. The bus service is very easy to use and you can get an all day travel card for €2.60. We visited Valleta, Medina and Mellieha when we were there and the bus stop is about 20 yards from the hotel.

Overall a lovely hotel and had a brilliant holiday!! Cannot commend the staff enough and the food and drink was brilliant, however if you want to explore then you do need to use the bus service.

Top tips - book a taxi or private transfers from the airport because it is cheaper, take travel sickness tablets at whatever the form (bus or car) Maltese driving leaves a lot to be desired. English travellers you do not need a travel adapter as the plugs in this hotel are 3 pin. The comino speedboat trip at reception is definitely worth a visit. Also Rebekah's restaurant in Mellieha is a must plus they have free transport (see previous review).

Dear Karen,
I would like to start off by thanking you for your nice comments above.
It is of great satisfaction to read that you enjoyed your stay here with us.
As you have rightly said, the resort is in a secluded area, however most guests come to this resort for that particular reason so that they can enjoy the tranquility and views that only The Riviera Resort & Spa can offer.
Even though it is a bit far from the center, a bus stop is located just 50 meters away from the resort, with an efficient bus service which offers connections to every part of the island.
I wish to also show my appreciation for your comments regarding the food quality and beverage selection. We have been working very hard in order to improve this aspect of the resort. This was done by listening to the feedback left by guests. We are very satisfied to hear that such improvements have given our guests a better hotel experience.
Whilst I wish to thank you once again for your comments, I do hope that we will have the pleasure to see you over for another holiday in the near future.

Dear Mohammed,

I would like to thank you for your nice review written above.
One of our many assets is the amazing view one can enjoy from the rooms and the public areas. The views of our neighbouring Island, Gozo and Comino can be enjoyed from many places in the resort.
Our 3 restaurants which are part of the All Inclusive package have sea views and thus guests can enjoy their meal whilst overlooking the sea which is exactly infront of the resort.
We must say that guests find these views as being very relaxing and tranquil.
Once again I wish to thank you for your comments. I do hope that we will have the pleasure of seeing you here with us once again.

I am well travelled and stayed in many hotels around the world for holiday purposes, as such I prefer a minimum 4 star hotel thus I chose the Riviera for our first visit to Malta, how I have lived to regret that! Where do I start? On arrival the staff at the desk, four of them, not one smile or warm words of welcome however they gave me our room keys and left us to find our own way to the fourth floor without any direction. The corridor on the fourth floor was stale smelling and the carpets grubby, on entering the room we were hit with the horrid smell of what was clearly damp, albeit no narks on walls or ceilings thus suspected a failing air conditioning unit. Moving on the food was quite frankly disgusting, choices were minimal and nit international, the cold salad bar had flies clearly fusible to all, and the hot food was anything but hot. All hot food was at best warm, but by the time selected and returned to table, it was cold to touch and taste....not good enough! At breakfast we thought, this must surely be ok....not! The chefs at the hot plate despite having a hot griddle for egg cooking big enough for at least 8 to 10 fried eggs struggled to ever get more than 2 on at a time despite the ever increasing queues, and the beans were cold, not warm, cold! The bacon over cooked to the point it was like leather and yes you guessed it.....cold! The only hot food I could obtain at breakfast was the toast which I did myself! The bar at night was the only place we had some fulfilment yet even this was tarred with the presence of many young children aged 5 to 10 running around the bar area, and even sitting at the bar on high stools occupying "adult" space whilst absent parents sat outside leaving kids to run amok but the staff did nothing about it at any time, and on the large screen tv in the bar were music videos the likes of which young children should not be seeing! After a couple of days of not eating properly, or sleeping properly due to mattresses with springs bulging thru the fabric, and now a flooded corridor to the room with numerous towels laid out to absorb the ever increasing smelly water I made my complaints to management, Mario was his name. He made notes of all my complaints to many to mention here and said he would look into and deal accordingly.......hmmmn! I never heard back from him or any other staff member, other than a number of staffing spoke to about the food who individually informed me would never eat at the restaurant at this hotel. This hotel is not only a joke of a four star, but run by people who gave no idea of what they are doing. Oh and before I forget the room cleaners never cleaned, our room floor was so dirty it made our feet black leaving black footprints on the bath which even after showering never fully came of the bath surface, yet despite room cleaners etc those same marks were still there after room was allegedly cleaned. I could go on and on, suffice to say I am warning anyone thinking of using this hotel....NOT TO!

Room Tip: Don't stay here

Dear Sir / Madam,

I wish to thank you for your time to write the above review. For the benefit of those reading this post, I wish to clarify some points mentioned above.
With regards to the quality of food at The Mirasol Restaurant, The range of food on our Mirasol Buffet is very extensive. Two buffet counters are dedicated to salads alone; the large round buffet counter and another one against the wall present no less than 32 salads at every lunch and dinner. The range includes ingredients for guests to mix themselves with an assortment of sauces and dressings as well as prepared antipasti (based on meat, roasted vegetables, meat cuts, etc.) Pasta, potatoes, meat and fish are also found on the buffet counter along with 3 different types of Pizza and also a vast selection of desserts. We take care to ensure that these are prepared in a different way, different pasta types and sauces, different meat types, cuts and sauces, different fish types and sauces, different potato recipes. In addition, we also include different rice recipes. A buffet planner used by the kitchen team ensures the correct variation of these dishes to ensure that a consistent change is maintained.
One also needs to mention that theme nights are organized 3 times a week. These are Maltese Night, Oriental Night and Mexican Night. By doing this we ensure that we meet all tastes of our numerous guests.
I would like to also assure readers that all of the food found on the buffet counter is kept at the right temperature. Temperatures are taken during every breakfast, Lunch and dinner service to ensure that the correct temperature is maintained.
Being a resort we also accept families with young children. We do apologise if some children were of nuisance to you during your holiday, however one has to keep in mind that they are also on holiday and want to enjoy themselves. With this being said, a kids club is available for children from the 1st of April until the 31st of October were several activities are organized during the day.
All rooms in our resort are cleaned on a daily basis by our housekeeping team and also checked by our Supervisors. I do however wish to apologise if this was not up to your expectations.
Whilst I hope that the above has cleared any issues raised by your review, I do hope that you will give us another opportunity.

Kind regards,
