Great Holiday spoilt by French

Great Location, Great hotel, Great staff, good food.

We came to this hotel last year so thought we knew what to expect, how wrong could we be, It appears that a French travel has won the concession for the next 5 years for this hotel, and it absolutely flooding it with short break cheepo holidays. Therefore everything is biased towards the French, public announcements, entertainment etc, French all comes 1st, and the French guests live up to thier reputation of being surly, rude, and refusing to queue for anything.

The Thomson reps did a stirling job trying to appease fed up Brits over the French problem, most of the Brits we spoke to, many who have visiting this hotel for many years, said they would not be coming back here again.

The evening entertainment is provided by a French animation team, 3 young lads who have very little obvious experience, unless you consider an evening of French Karaoke, Dave on his Bongo's, or a trainee Country & Western singer as your cup of tea.

It is such a shame that this been allowed to happen to such a great hotel, but I suppose the owners have to make a living. However if we wish to go on a holiday overwhelmed by French we will go to France, not Malta.

Malta is a beautiful island and must be seen to be appreciated, dont miss the Sunday Festa's to witness true Maltese culture, and a visit to the underground church to 'Our Lady' in Melliaha Vilage is well worth a look.

We stayed in the Mellieha bay hotel for six days in May 2007.
The hotel is far from being 4 stars at any level.
Rooms, amenities, food, cleanliness date back to the early seventies.

Went there with wife the first week in June 2009. Went mainly to relax and soak up the sun. Weather was brilliant and there was loads of places in the hotel grounds to chill, gardens, pool or the private sandy beach. Done the cruise around the island on the Fernandes boat and it was a fantastic day out, all you can eat and drink and the captain gives a very good talk on the islands history as you cruise around. The hotel itself was very clean and the food couldn't be faulted. Full english breakfast and the evening meals were excellent with plenty of choice. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The guests in the hotel were all ages going from babies to pensioners. Went for a stroll around the bay and had a couple of drinks in the bars. The missus likes to dance and we had a good night in Fuegos club which is across the bay. Also got a bus into the village one night and tried a couple of bars, ended up in one of the new hotels listening live music, good night out. Buses go everywhere, done the trip to Valletta on the Sunday morning for the market. When out walking watch out for mad Scottish woman in little red car selling time share! Also be aware if getting a taxi, agree the price beforehand.

Went to Mellieha Bay in Malta on May 26th and returned June 02 2009. We stayed at the RIU Seabank Hotel on B+B basis.
The hotel was brilliant and maid service was very good, the breakfast choice was excellent and you could eat as much as you wanted, including Cornflakes, Cheerios many other cereal too. There was a good choice of Melons and other fruit and the usual British choice of Sausage, fried eggs (ask for fresh ones as they are very rubbery when left for a while) baked beans, bacon, boiled eggs and a variety of potato things. There was also the usual cheese and chocolate area for the Dutch or Danish/ German breakfasters.
The area around Melieha Bay is a little run down but the beach and sea were very good apart from the occasional Jelly Fish day!
The trip to Comino caves, Blue Lagoon and a brief call into Gozo harbour was very good. We got the boat from the Tunny Net over the road from our hotel and it was only 11.50 Euro for adults and 5.50 Euro for kids. Well worth the money and you get 3 hours at the Blue Lagoon on Comino too.
The Fruit and Veg man on Mellieha beach opposite the Seabank hotel is very friendly and all his drinks and Pringles are cheaper than the hotel. He sells large cups of fresh fruit salads for 2.50 Euro which are very enjoyable on a hot day, plus if you are waiting for your coach on the last day, he is very convenient for your Water or Fanta, to drink whilst wating for the coach, he also sells sweets and chocolate. He was a godsend if you missed the only other decent shop at the Danish Holiday Centre up the road. This well stocked Supermarket shuts most nights at 19.00, so get there early or else your left to the mercy of buying drinks at restaurant prices.
I should mention the Bar/Pizza place over the road from the Danish complex as the owner added some chillies and garlic to my Spaghetti Bolognase when I couldn't find anything spicey to eat and made me and my family most welcome, even buying us all a drink on our last night. Can't remember the name of the bar but he raced speedboats and stuff.
Anyway to sum up we had brilliant weather and an excellent time for our first trip to Malta and we can't wait to go back soon.
Hope this review helps someone.
Don't get me started on Thomas Cook however, as I booked my holiday some 10 months before I was due to go so I could get my works holiday booked, was due to fly out at 07.00, a couple of weeks before the holiday they put flight back 9 1/2 hours to 16.30, we ended up taking off another 4 hours late and instead of my original time of 11.00 arriving in Malta, we landed at 23.30 getting to hotel room at 02.00 next day. No good with an 8 year old.
Coming back we were picked up from our hotel at 08.30 for a supposedly 11.55 flight, the coach was nearly an hour late and when we got to the airport we were told the flight was delayed untill 16.45. This meant we were prisoners at the airport from 10.00 until 16.45, TC gave us one food voucher for 5 Euros, but a small Fanta was nearly 3 Euros. The plane that picked us up had taken off from Gatwick but had to return for "Technical problems" and after landing again over half the passengers wouldn't re board it as it was dodgy, we didn't get told this until I spoke to a friend of mine who works for Thomson at Gatwick.
Anyway I hope that you don't have the same luck as we did with our flights, have a great time!

We have been to this same hotel with first our eldest son, then both children, and now our youngest son. We've been there every year since 1996, sometimes twice a year. We cannot wait to go again this July, this will be our 16 time to the same hotel! We've been in March, April, May, June, July, October and November and love all the seasons. Fantastic hotel, wonderful staff, delicious food, lots to do, beautiful weather, the perfect holiday for us all to just relax. Made some wonderful friends. Many tourists visit time and time again, even more than we do! Some people simply moan about anything and everything in life, so do not listen to others, experience it for yourself. Ground floors are wonderful because you can sit out and have lots of room. The bedrooms are fine, could do with updating, but very comfortable and clean. We feel this is our second home. Lots to do around the hotel and island. The views are breathtaking, simply wonderful and blissful.......can't wait for next month until we visit again!
