“malta- lovely country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

just returned form the Mellieha Bay Hotel, after reading the reviews was a bit worried, didn't need to be some people just like to moan. we found the hotel clean our room was very nice on the ground floor with the door opening out onto the lovely gardens. the food was nice something different to eat everynight, the puddings are especially nice. staff were friendly and helpfull, the hotel is set in a lovely location and the views were fantastic. You can get a bus to anywhere on the island for 2euros60, using that ticket all day for as many buses as you want, the bus journeys however are not the most comfortable, they drive way to fast so you have to hold on for dear life! We visited Mosta Church, we were told by the rep before we went that the church opens at 6.30am-11.00am, its actually open from 9.00am-11.45, we were also told ladies were not allowed to enter the church with they're shoulders uncovered. but the church provides you with a shaw Don't go on the market trip with thomson its 10euros each we got the bus for 2euros60! it was the first time to Malta for me and its a lovely country so many places to visit, i will return to Malta one year and i will choose the same hotel.

The hotel is idillic situated, overlooking Mellieha Bay. All the rooms have sea view. We booked a superior room and the room was excellent. Large room with balcony, air conditioning and LCD television, safe and minibar. The cleaning was excellent. We had a minor problem with the sink and as soon as we reported it to the reception in the evening it was immediately solved.
The restaurant was a bit too hot, expecially in the evening and sometimes the distance between the table was too narrow. The cuisine was good, with a good choice, but it was definitely better at lunch. We had halfboard and the hotel gave the opportunity to choose which meal take in the hotel (lunch or dinner). The service was good. The rating is an average betweein some waiters who were really excellent and others who were not at the level of a 4 star hotel.
From the hotel there is a direct access to the sea and there you find sunbeds and sunumbrellas. The part directly situated on the beach is wonderful but it's not very big and unfortunately a lot of guests leave their towels on the sunbeds in the evening or before going to breakfast so that it is almost impossible to get the sunbeds there. We did not want to argue but we didn't find it very correct and the hotel should take some remedies about that. In the part near the rocks there is definitely more space between the sunbeds and there is plenty of opportunity to find a place. The hotel has also several swimming pools, but we didn't use them as we preferred the sea, which is really nice.
The hotel has beautiful gardens, very well cared of. Not so well cared is the tennis court. One of the reason why we booked this hotel is that there are two tennis courts, but they are really impossible to use. One didn't even have the net. We played one hour, but it was really terrible. Grass growing on the court (and it's not a grass court....), holes, the net was falling down. That's a pity, because the court has also a wonderful look on the bay and we would have enjoyed playing there.
The entertainment in the evening had some ups and downs. Two performers were really very good. Unfortunately one performance was interrupted by some stupid games with the public that were really of low level and not at the standard of a 4 star hotel. The
All together we had a good experience in the hotel. I would rate it a good 3 star hotel rather than a 4 star but the price/quality is good.

lovely hotel, grounds, service, food, pools ...... perfect location overlooking the bay with access to the sea and both pools.

Our first visit to Malta could not have been better. Entertainment mixed - not our choice but plenty of places to sit overlooking the bay with a glass of very pleasant rose. Lovely way to spend time.

Sandro in the bar was excellent - always smiling. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Seven of us travelled to Malta from 13th -20th August one week all inclusive including my ten year old daughter ..what can I say apart from amazing after reading some of the reviews here I was actually dreading it and wished I had booked somewhere else but I can tell you now I soon changed my mind the hotel was beautiful and cleaned to perfection everyday our rooms were great we were in b block rooms all next to each other on the 4th floor the views were to die for sea views overlooking the pool and harbour and mellieha were breath taking , the housekeepers one Scottish lady and another called Irene were excellent the rooms was cleaned to a High standard every day
The main pool was sometimes a bit annoying with children bombing and splashing and the scuba divers in the morning but we soon discovered the other pool which was much better there were activities each day including water aerobics which was fun and there was a separate children's pool we would arrive after ten and always manage to get a bed for seven of us just wished we had discovered this sooner
The beach was amazing and the sea to die for but unfortunately I did not like the fish bitting my ankles so after one day we then stayed around the pool
Food -wow always a great variety and the staff were friendly and would go out of their way for us
My only little gripe would be the entertainment was a little boring however we did enjoy Danny devito junior who had us laughing but he was booked Thursday and Sunday so the second time round wasn't as good but as their were seven of us luckily we made our own entertainment
Overall my first trip to Malta and I was not disappointed the team and hotel were amazing and I would definitely go back well done Mellieha Bay

We had two weeks at this hotel which we returned from 13th August 2013. The hotel was clean and well looked after. Staff were friendly particularly bar and restaurant staff. We always managed to get sun beds both by the pool or sea. Most of the time it was very quiet around the pool and the few children that seemed to be there were not a big problem.
Our room had an extra bed in for my son, it was good to see a proper bed and not some camp bed affair. The room was cleaned everyday to a good standard.Air conditioning worked a treat in the room, in fact at some points had to turn it off as it was so cool.
The entertainment was truly terrible, and was repeated our second week. The only half decent act was the dancers, who did do some different routines the second week. Thank goodness for a lovely reception area which was full of comfortable sofas and chairs were we could sit and play cards on an evening.
The private hotel access to the beach was great. My husband and son throughly enjoyed snorkelling in the sea there.
The food was good, the selection was very varied every day. The BBQ evenings were particularly good. We were all inclusive and genuinely feel it was well worth the money.

My husband and I stayed at this lovely hotel with our 8 year old grandson last month.
Staff were exceptional in their efforts to ensure our comfort and satisfaction.
Our towels and beds were changed every other day and there was maid service every day.(Bless you Irene!)
The restaurant staff were friendly and very helpful indeed although following your advice, we took a travel kettle for an early morning cuppa.
Everyone went out of their way to be pleasant and this went a long way to ensure we all had a truly wonderful holiday.
All rooms have a sea view, there was a wide variety of food at every meal to choose from, the swimming pools were great.
We got around the island easily and cheaply using a very reliable and new looking Arriva bus service. We met several ex London bus drivers!
Although we booked with Thomsons, we flew Air Malta. Forget budget airlines! the cabin crew were fab and everything was included, much to our delighted surprise! No extra for seats together or inflight meals!!!!Really can highly recommend this superb hotel for a magical holiday Many, many thanks to them all at Mellieha Bay Hotel and to Lee at Aqua Venture Malta who made our grandsons holiday dream come true.! We will definitely be back

We stayed at The Mellieha bay Hotel from 2nd July for 2 weeks, having never stayed in Malta before we read plenty of reviews first. We chose this hotel because of its location to the largest sandy beach on the island and because of positive comments from Trip Advisor.
First impressions on arriving were good as the staff were very attentive and couldn't do enough to help you. I forgot to pack our beach towels, so they lent me some straight away, no fuss.
Our room was situated very near the dining room and reception on the 2nd floor, we requested this as we had read that it can be a long walk from some rooms in the hotel, as it has over 300 rooms! If you have mobility issues make sure you request a room close by. Every room has a sea view across the bay which was lovely to wake up to. Air conditioning was great in the room and couldn't have slept without it, also the fridge came in handy as we had bought our own kettle and kept milk in there for tea (previous trip advisor reviews mentioned no tea making facilities' in the room) The rooms were cleaned every day to a very high standard. There was no free Wi-Fi at the hotel which was disappointing as the other hotels in the area did not charge for this service.
The food choice was very good especially for myself as a vegetarian, just watch out for small pieces of ham or tuna in some "vegetarian" salads! We went all inclusive and the choice of local drinks was good, even the local wine was drinkable! Have to say the service in the dining room was first class, staff" worked their socks off". Only criticism of the dining room was the air conditioning which was never switched on, and some days we couldn't wait to get out, as it was stifling! The last day we were there they put dining tables out on the terrace in the evening which was lovely.
We didn't go on any of the organised trips round the island , as people we met who had been on them to had said that the boats were really crowded, the food on board was awful and was not value for money. We hired a car from local firm- Drifter car hire who were reasonably priced (its cheaper to book beforehand in the UK) and explored the island ourselves, the Maltese drive on the left but can be a bit erratic!
I would highly recommend going to Paradise Bay diving school in Paradise bay and getting the speed boat to The Blue lagoon, It was only 10 euro each and got there really fast in 10 mins it was an exhilarating ride! We took the car ferry to Gozo 20 euro for 2 people and drove round the lovely little island, a must see is the beautiful little cove of Xlendi, with lots of little bars and restaurants around the clear water bay. We found having our own wheels a better alternative to using the buses, as this avoids being at the places same time as all the coaches and tourists, although we used the park and ride into Valletta as parking in the city is for residents only.
We always managed to get sunbeds round the pool no matter what time of day, and it was never over crowded as there were sunbeds on the small private beach and by the sea. There was another pool at the other end of the hotel where the kids club was based and where most of the non-brits were staying .
Only thing that we complained about was the scuba divers used the outdoor pool to practice in all morning, which pushed all the swimmers to the edge of the pool, we complained about this as they were supposed to use the indoor pool and it was very un-nerving seeing divers below you looking up at you swimming! It seemed to work as they only did it once again in the whole fortnight.
In some reviews it stated that this hotel was for older couples but we found a very good mix of ages from babies to seniors which created a good atmosphere.
The hotel entertainment at night was pretty poor, we enjoyed the pool quiz 3 times a week and apart from Johnny the country singer who was good- the rest was dire!! The magician was a joke! - I've seen 5 year olds perform better tricks! Apart from that there were plenty of terraces to sit and enjoy the beautiful view across the bay at night.
On our day of departure we had a late check out so requested a complementary room , we shouldn't have bothered as it was a room in the other side of the hotel, neither the shower and hair drier didn't work- it was a total waste of time. The alternative was to pay 25 euros for a room till 6pm which we thought was a cheek!
This 2 weeks stay in Malta has definitely made me want to return and explore the island more, its a lovely island well worth a visit, I would definitely stay at The Mellieha bay Hotel again. Good value for money with a friendly atmosphere.
