We had a great week at the hotel and would certainly return. Our room on the 3rd floor was quite basic and outdated in its furniture, but it was very clean and had a fridge, hairdryer and television. (although a very old style )
The bathroom was compact but functional with bath and shower, although the shower was certainly not a power shower it was just sufficient to quickly shower etc. The water was always hot and plentiful. The room was cleaned every day with new towels provided. The plus side was the view from the balcony looking over the bay to the town opposite. which was spectacular both 1st thing in the morning when the sun rose to the evening when the lights of the town opposite made for a wonderful view. The air conditioning was very good and essential for a good nights sleep.
The lobby area with the main lounge and bar were always cool with air con and very popular before and after meal times. It is nicely decorated and always very clean.
The dining area is large and although it is a busy hotel we always easily found a table for our meals. We tended to go down to breakfast about 8.30am when it was a bit quieter, but there was always a full selection and variety of food to choose from. Surprisingly the scrambled eggs and bacon were of high quality, although we ate mostly fruit with cereal, fruit salad, yoghurts, pears, pineapple etc etc..
In the evening we found that to get a table outside overlooking the bay was difficult but nearly always were successful by arriving just after 8pm. The view is lovely and creates a lovely atmosphere for your evening meal.
Again we found the food to be varied and of a good standard. There was always some form of fish, which we used as a starter, either muscles, squid, tuna, smoked salmon, with a wide choice of salads to go with it. For the mains you could choose from at least 6 different meals.. ie steak, duck, pork, beef, gammon, lamb, there was a BBQ on two evenings and on one occasion there was a lamb curry. The downside to the dining area was it was not air conditioned and could get very hot if you could not get a table outside.
The facilities outside were very good with 2 large pools at either end of the complex. Another big advantage is the private beach which although not large is well equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. The water is crystal clear and very safe to swim in and go snorkling to watch the many variety of fish, Adjacent to the swimming area is a very good activity centre with sailing, sailboarding, canoeing, etc and a dive centre on site offering a wide range of dives for the beginner to the experienced.
Several trips can be arranged through the dive centre and are of better value than those on offer through the reps from your travel company !!
Don't be conned into visiting Comino blue lagoon via the rep,(20 EU each) it took an hour by coach to get to Selima , picking up many others from other hotels on route. Once on the boat, which is quite large and well equipped it takes 1 half hours to get there, which was not too unpleasant with a commentary on route.
Prior to arriving the captain announced that there was no food or drink facilities on the island so suggested that any provisions should be purchased on board before being dropped off. (that was a lie)
Although the blue lagoon area at one point I'm sure many years ago was a lovely spot to swim, it is now over run with tourists.. we were late in arriving only to find that another 6 large boats had arrived before us, making I,m sure over 600 people in and around the bay area all trying to get a deck chair and umbrella.
It was heaving and very uncomfortable, particularly as we had to berth a little way away from the main area, which then involved quite a steep climb up to the path leading to the main area. There is no beach and deck chairs are placed in every conceivable position and costs 6 eu to hire !.
Circling the deck chairs are numerous large stalls selling kebabs chicken meals drinks in fact everything you would find on Blackpool front. (Remember the Captain saying no food and drink available !!!)
They leave you there for 4 hours which was not very pleasant due to the total overcrowding and smell of cooking from the vans just above you. Many people decided to wait on board and swim from the boat. Originally the rep said we would be back about 4.30pm.. that was never going to happen as the boat was not leaving until 4.45 then 1 half hours back.. then an hours coach trip back to the hotel meant it would have been nearly 8 pm.. so in order to get away we paid 30 EU to take a power boat ride back which left at 4pm and dropped us off at the hotel at 4.45pm. The whole day cost 90 EU and was a waste of time and money, although the power boat trip was great fun and an experience and probably the best part of the trip.
The hotel is located on the other side of the bay well away from the main town opposite and would take a good 30 minutes to get to with a very steep hill to climb to get to the centre of the town. Having said that we were more than happy to stay at the hotel in the evenings as the food was very good and there was entertainment every night in the air conditioned bar / entertainment area.
The staff we found to be very friendly and helpful and have no real negative issues with our stay , which was very enjoyable.
Try and get a refurbished room on the 3rd floor if possible. E mail in advance that you would like a...
