“Mellieha Bay Hotel. Malta”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

My husband and I stayed at the Melieha Bay hotel over Christmas. It was brilliant. Christmas eve was lovely, with a school choir singing carols in the reception. Mulled wine and candles round the large xmas tree, them in to a suberb christmas meal. The food was good all week. The staff were friendly and the hotel spotless. The bedrooms were clean and bright and had everything. Mini fridge stocked with water, safe, tea making facilities. You can get a bus opposite the hotel to anywhere on the island. We are planning to return to this hotel in September when it wil be hotter than Dec. Having said that weather was warm in december and we only had rain one morning for about 10mins.

Room Tip: the front of the hotel is sea view, which we had. The back of the hotel overlooks the swimming pool...

My husband and I flew out the Malta on New Years day with some trepidition. We had booked a last minute deal at the Mellieha Bay hotel and read some of the reports on Tripadvisor after we had booked. We last visited Malta 30 years ago and although we had not stayed at this hotel before, we had visited when relatives were staying and it was then a really good hotel. When we arrived on New Years day we were expecting a dated and uninviting hotel. We were spectacularly suprised to find ourselves in a delightfully clean, welcoming and great place. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Staff could not do enough for us. The view from our room was spectacular and all the food was of excellent quality and quantity. I think maybe some of your other contibuters went to a different hotel. Could not fault Mellieha Bay Hotel. Excellent.

Room Tip: All rooms at this hotel have a sea view so do not pay extra for one.

My husband and I stayed here for a week AI in January 13. We had booked it at the last minute for a very good price and were on the whole pleasantly surprised.

The hotel is advertised as a 4 star, but is looking dated and faded in parts. However the room we had B311 had been refurbished and the view was probably the best we have ever had.

The food was on the whole very good especially the cakes. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful.

Even though the Hotel was a bit "tired" the food, location and service was second to none . We would like to try a summer break at this hotel as the weather was a bit changeable. It was so easy to see the sights using the Hop on Hop off Bus service which was great value for money.

This review aims to provide information which I did not find in other reviews.

All inclusive option –
The restaurant - Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be taken in the restaurant. The restaurant is slightly formal with table cloths and waiter service for alcoholic and soft drinks. Food and hot drinks are self-service.
Café bar - Hot meals (such as burgers, hot dogs and chips) and salads are available from the café bar at lunch which can be eaten by the pools or in the café bar. Baguettes and sandwiches are available 10:00-17:00 and 22:00-00:00. The café bar is informal with a few tables and mostly sofas with low tables.
Pool bars - Both outside pools have small bars attached with restricted opening hours which offer drinks, baguettes, sandwiches and some snacks.
Lounge bar – Serves drinks and crisps.
Drinks - The all-inclusive option allows drinks from 10:00 to 00:00 including Stella and a variety of non-brand spirits such as rum, whiskey, vodka, gin, coffee liquor and local spirits along with wine, 2 fruity cocktails and mixers. For non-alcoholic drinks there are soft drinks (including diet cola), bottles of water, fruit juice, some local beverages, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Before 10:00 hot drinks and fruit juice can also be obtained at breakfast in the restaurant. A bar or cafe is open about half hour either side of these times but you will have to pay. Branded drinks and further cocktails are also available at a price.
General - Crisps, fruit cake and ice cream lollies are available 10:00 to 00:00 from most outlets. A wrist band denotes all inclusive status. Once these outlets are closed it is not possible to get anything (although reception is 24 hours and may help at their discretion). You are allowed to take food and drinks into your room and there is a fridge so it is advisable to plan ahead.

Activities and facilities – There are 2 outside pools and 1 inside pool. There are tennis courts (€7.50 for 2 people for 1 hour with rackets and balls) and bowls greens with equipment from reception. Exercise machines and table tennis are in the mini gym. The key to the gym needs to be obtained from reception and the room is glass fronted in a prominent position so it is often locked and empty. A small library can be found stocked with books in various languages. There is archery although I never saw it in use. A ping pong table can be used for free by one of the outside pools. A separate company on the private hotel beach provides water sports and hire of equipment. A masseuse (around €16 for 1/2 hour) and hair dresser (€31.50 for a shampoo cut and blow dry) are on site. The launderette has 2 washing machines which have detergent included in the price and a dryer. An iron & board are freely available in the laundry room. There are computers with painfully slow internet for €5 for 80 minutes in the back of the lounge bar. A very small shop on site with restricted opening hours sells newspapers and souvenirs.

Entertainment - Some form of entertainment was going on in the lounge bar every night. This was usually a small band or someone on a keyboard. One evening a sword swallow entertained and there seemed to be a weekly Mr Mellieha Bay Hotel contest. Occasionally there was bingo or a quiz in the early evening in the lounge bar in addition to the night’s event. The schedule of entertainment is pinned to a notice board. A TV in the café bar showed mostly sports. Big sporting events are shown on a projection screen in a separate room next to the lounge bar.

Excursions - The Thompson rep had a wealth of information and leaflets regarding excursions (such as boat or jeep rides) as well as maps of the local area and information on buses and taxis. They provide help and bookings to everyone whether they use Thompson or not. Reception can book tickets for tour buses and taxis.

Local area - A bus stop is a 5 min walk from the hotel with buses going to Valetta, St Pauls and Buggia. Around the bay is a public beach (deck chairs for hire) and a few bars, cafes and beach type shops. Signs for a 'holiday centre' point to a small complex open to the public (15 mins walk from the hotel) attached to a number of holiday bungalows. This has a small supermarket, pool, bars and restaurant. The other side of the bay can be reached by a 30 min walk or short bus ride where there are further bars, restaurants, shops and a jetty with boats offering cruises and boat trips to the Blue Lagoon. The town of Mellieha is on the top of a hill which can be reached by the bus which stops near the hotel or a very hearty walk uphill. The town has similar shops to a small UK sea side high street such as pharmacies, souvenir shops, clothes shops, banks, car rentals, groceries, bars, cafés, take aways, restaurants, hotels and a pretty church.

Rooms - In the room is a TV, radio, fridge (empty), hair drier, air con (free), safe (must pay), shave point, phone, a limited number of plugs, balcony or patio, shower caps, soap, shampoo & shower gel. All rooms have a view of the bay, although ground floor is restricted.

We spent Christmas and the New year at the Mellieha Bay Hotel, and the overall impression is that it is ideal for a short break, but due to personal preferences we would go there for a main holiday.... Nothing really major to complain about but the hotel is very dated and frankly it needs dramatically more than a refurb, evening entertainment can be so bad that its amusing. Food was buffet style, and they could do with having more than one type vegetable with dinner.
These "niggles" aside we had a great short break, although we would return one word of advice would be to make sure you go all inclusive, we did and for the extra it cost was minimal trust me we had our money back in one night alone in drink! Oh and the Thompsons rep arranged a birthday cake for a 21st birthday, which I thought was a nice touch until at checkout we were charged 12 euros for it, I have no issues with this (and if told beforehand would still have had it) but I believe that you should be told that there will be a charge.

Room Tip: All rooms are sea facing.
