“Mellieha Bay Hotel - Review Dec 2012”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

We have just returned from a holiday at the Mellieha Bay Hotel in Malta from 13th to 20th December 2012. To truly compare or give an overview I think you must be aware of all the information. I booked independently through Travel Republic, we flew from Bristol via Ryan Air (price extra), caught the shuttle (which we paid extra for) to the hotel and paid £250 each direct to the hotel for an all inclusive week. The shuttle transfer was good and efficient, we arrived at the hotel and our room was well-appointed, magnificent views over the bay and towards Mellieha town which was lit up at night, in fact, I don't think I have ever had a better view from any hotel I have ever stayed in. The hotel itself is at the top of the island and not far from the ferry terminal to Gozo, so you have to bus it if you want to get around the island, but with daily roamer fares at 2.60 euros each for as much use as you like you can't go wrong, you soon get the hang of the busses and the stop is only a couple of hundred yards down the road. Indicate clearly that you want the bus to stop and they will stop, if you don't, they wont! The hotel grounds are lovely, the pool is great and the indoor pool is good also. Food I would say is excellent, although some people will moan about anything, but I didn't find anything to moan about at all. There is a beach just down the road, supermarket, but don't be tempted to walk to the Popeye village as we did unless you are a hardened walker, as it is a long way!!! Evening entertainment is so, so, and the staff could be a bit abrupt at times, it is not one of these new classy marble shiny floored hotels, but to conclude, we had an excellent holiday, value for money, unsurpassed views and felt we could not have made a better choice. If you are thinking of going for a break in a nice hotel I don't think you can go wrong with this one!!!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have doors straight to the outside and a small patio-ish area outside, Rooms 101...

We had never been to malta so decided to take a cheap holiday for a break. The Mellieha Bay Hotel was very good. The staff where very friendly. The food was plentyfull and there was always something there for everyone to eat. The room we was in was very nice I think it had been re vamped. The hotel itself was tired but very clean. It needs an overhaul. Most people we meet there had been returning for 20 - 40 odd years. That speaks volumes. It is set in a very picturesque gardens with palms and flowers. I would return again, but when I have been other places.

We returned for a third holiday here, having previously been here in 2006 and 2008. Reading some reviews had made us a little apprehensive about what to expect but we were well satisfied with our visit. The hotel is a little shabby outside (we were told this is being rectified and repairs and decorating is underway). This is NOT a Thomson Gold hotel as some people want to compare it with, but is excellent value for money.
The hotel, as ever, is very clean throughout. The Thomsons rooms have been refurbished and are well turned out, comfortable and cleaned thoroughly each day with clean bedding and towels as required. The public area are well appointed and comfortable, but as there are fewer guests in in the winter the Limelight Lounge is not often used for the entertainment. The staff are generally very friendly and welcoming, particularly those who have been there on previous visits who once you acknowledge them are keen to chat.
The food is good quality, well presented and with plenty of variety. The roasts are first class, the soups are thick with plenty of vegetables, the pasta and sauces are excellent and the sweets are wonderful! If I were to be negative about the meals it would be to say the breakfasts are a little boring and the cooked breakfasts do not look too appetising. Fine for me as I kept off them and had fruit, cereal or toast. There were croissants some mornings but not others and no substitute.
We had the all inclusive deal which was excellent value. This hotel has a very good idea of providing sandwiches from the bar which you can either take out with you, or have instead of a lunch. There is also a bar menu and cakes. We love their fruit cake.
This hotel must be in one of the best positions in Malta with beautiful gardens. It may not be suitable for older guests (although many seem to return year after year) unless you are fit and mobile. It is quite a walk to the bus if you are not an active person, but once at the bus stop you can access Malta very easily by bus.
If you like walking, like us, you can walk up to the village of Mellieha, round the bay, or up to Red Tower to name but a few walks.

Room Tip: We were in A Block which was quite a long walk from reception. B Block is nearer and the higher th...

The food was really good, all the staff from management to cleaners were polite and cheerful throughout our stay. there was activities each day and entertainment every night. The only gripe I had was there was nothing outside the hotel, it was a half hour walk to the nearest bar. The hotel is great for anyone who doesn't go outside the hotel. The views from the hotel are excellent all have a sea or and garden view

Room Tip: B or higher

Stayed here in November for a week on HB. Had a bit of an auspicious start when we found ourselves in a room with a connecting door to another room - great if you have travelled with children etc but not when you are a couple. You could hear everything - right down to conversations and shouting going on next door. We asked to be moved and were moved straight away. even though it was 11pm. Great for us but if the hotel was full and this happened you would be stuck. I do believe some rooms have been refurbished and these are given to the Thompson guests. These were the only rooms we saw so cannot comment on the others. All rooms face the sea so we thought there was no need to pay extra for a sea view, but you will be higher up if you pay for a sea view as the lower rooms had the view impaired by the garden. We however didn't mind this as it meant you could use the external door to go out to the pool etc and not have to walk back through the hotel. If we returned we would choose to do this again. Beds were comfy, can't say the same for the pillows and remember to take your own beach towels, these are not provided. Rooms were cleaned daily and staff were very friendly. They ask you to inform them if there is anything wrong with the room, we did and it was sorted out immediately. None of the water sports were available as far as we could tell as it was too late in the season. Food in the hotel was fine, they have a 15 day rotation on the menus and there was always something to eat, again all the staff were very helpful. No drinks are provided (not even tea or coffee) with evening meals if you are half board, so be prepared to pay extra for those. We decided that as we were out most days we wouldn't be eating in the hotel much during the day. Evening entertainment was pretty bad and we passed on it, apart from one evening when there was a pianist and the grand piano was uncovered. The lounge area I can imagine in full season gets too full to sit in. The music that was played in there was too loud (apart from the pianist ) to carry on a conversation. Be warned the flies/mosquitoes are fierce, take protection with you, they are still biting way out of high season.

The island itself is lovely, comments on the buses have been made elsewhere, but they are are a bargain for a daily EU2.60 however be prepared for the drivers to randomly decide they aren't going to stop at your stop. It is easy to get to most places of interest - do spend the day in Valletta and visit Medina and Rabat. A trip to Gozo is worthwhile, we did this ourselves rather than book through the tour operator, as the buses to the ferry terminal go from the end of the hotel drive. Return ferry is only about 6 Euros. We took the green bus tour ( the red buses split the island into two tours and you have to choose one of them) We bought our tickets before we got on the ferry at a discount - it's worth asking! Go to the Azure window and if the little boats are working take a trip out for EU 3.70.
To sum up. All in all a very relaxing holiday. Hotel needs updating in parts but for its age it is ok. Thought both pool areas were fine, plenty of sunbeds (can't comment high season!) Rooms seem to vary depending on who you book with - ask for a room without connecting doors if you want more peace and quiet! Take insect repellent and beach towels and if you are half board you might want a travel kettle as nothing is provided in the rooms. The room safes are small but we got ipad, documents and small notebook sized laptop in there ...just and they were free. Location is lovely.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms give access to outside and pool, higher rooms have greater sea view. All rooms f...

the hotel is stuck in the 1970s, needs a complete refurb or knocking down and rebuilding. The vanity unit in the bathroom was cracked in several places, the seals round the bath were black and broken, the glass shower screen was totally inadequate, resulting in water all over the floor after every shower. We also got cockroaches in the bathroom for which the treatment was a can of fly killer being left for us to spray. We had to sit in the bar area of the lobby every night apart from saturday, so felt as if we were waiting for the coach to pick us up every night. The area itself smelt of stale food and the so called bar was a sandwich cabinet and an area which was more suited for leaving empty glasses. The entertainment was so poor and after hearing songs from the60s & 70s of a country and western nature for 5 nights running i would have done anything to hear a bit of rap just for a change and I am in my 50s and actually like country and western but not all week. The food was adequate very English and little choice. The dining room was too cramped tables for two were so close together they may as well have been for four. On the plus side the location is fabulous and the staff are so helpful and lovely and the gardens are beautiful. Its a shame this could be stunning if it were moved into the 21st century. We were in block A which I named prisoner cell block A. We had heavy rain whilst there and the roof leaked in several places, to which the answer was to put towels down on the floor, the power also went so we were issued with candles which was very romantic.

Room Tip: keep away from A block
