Just returned from a week at maspalomas oasis club. I am extremely tolerant of most things, I read trip advisor reviews before i go away and usually cannot believe how petty some stuff is, but this is the first time I have actually been compelled to write a review myself.
I booked this holiday and knew it was only a cheap week away and I am aware that you get what you pay for but this was below anywhere I have ever stayed before. On arrival you realise how small the place is and it actually felt claustrophobic, the picture you can find of the pool area, that is pretty much it! I sat in the room the first hour thinking oh my god what have I booked here.
We stayed in a bungalow which is a room downstairs and a bathroom and bedroom upstairs, it was very basic but acceptable for a base as we are not a couple who just sit around the pool whilst on holiday. There was a fridge sink and hob in the downstairs area but on arrival there were ants all over this so we never used it. Fully aware that in the canaries you get ants everywhere so this again wasn't too much of a big deal. The shower was very powerful and welcoming after a day in the hot sun but it did not stay warm for very long when using it early evening. The bungalow did not have any kind of balcony, some of them had a very small one but ours did not. The apartments on the top floor looked to have the biggest private area outside.
There is no air con in the rooms even if you wanted it as an extra, there is no choice. There is a tele but you have to pay for it. Also wifi was only available at a charge of €1 for half an hour, €3 for 2 hours or €6 for the day, which was annoying when you are supposed to be staying fully inclusive, one day this was even out of order.
Ok, so onto the food, - thank god I didn't pay very much for this holiday as the food and drink was extremely bad and we had to eat and drink out most of the time. I am vegetarian but I don't think they understand what that means in this place. Breakfast was ok, as I managed to have beans on toast however the beans were only luke warm at best. There is a juice machine offering orange, pineapple, mixed fruit etc, this juice can only be explained as similar to luke warm melted down ice pop. The fizzy drinks are also of a very poor standard and we actually couldn't drink it. I do buy supermarket own brand pop in the uk but this was something else entirely, Not to mention that it was never cold. If you wanted a cold dink you had to buy one from the vending machine at €2.50 a go. We were never in for lunch so I cannot comment on lunch however the evening meal was terrible. The only thing I could have was overlooked chips, sometimes another form of potato, mashed one night, and boiled one night plus the one vegetable they had each night! ONE vegetable? I couldn't believe my eyes. Two nights it was sprouts, one green beans, one very soft sweet corn and one broccoli. There was plain pasta and usually some kind of sauce / liquid next to it, but on the two occasions that I asked what it was the staff smelled it and guessed what it was! Kitchen staff! So they didn't even know themselves, I gave the sauce a miss as I couldn't be sure there was no meat in it. There was even chopped up meat in most of the salad and cold platters. So my evening meal consisted of overcooked chips, one veg and usually cucumber. After the second night of this I was craving some proper food so we ended up eating out later in the evening and this became the norm for the rest of the week. My partner is not vegetarian but he even struggled to enjoy anything that was on offer which is difficult because he will eat anything. There is wine available on tap in the dining area but again this is undrinkable. The alcohol served at the bar is local brands which usually I don't mind and have drank and enjoyed in most places Abroad but again this is particularly poor and we stopped having them half way through the week and went out for proper drinks.
We stayed in a room which was next to the bar, 112. The bar area closes at 11pm so that can be a good or bad thing depending on what kind of holiday you like. But it is very noisy up until then if you stay in the room. Very cheesy poor evening entertainment also. We also had table tennis right outside our bungalow so if you sat outside you usually had people running around you after the ball which is ok a few times but becomes annoying after a while.
We are always up early on holiday and off out straight away but even if you don't get up early you will be awake from 6am as that's when the cleaners start dragging chairs around, washing the floor emptying bins and chatting/ shouting very loudly. This goes on until you get up because you can't stand it anymore. sometimes we had late nights out and were tired going to bed but we still couldn't sleep through this morning noise ritual so we were shattered during the day.
The location of oasis club is quite out of the way but they do offer a free bus to the beach and taxis stand outside the hotel up until quite late if you want to go up into playa del ingles for a night out and they are only max €5, however car hire is very cheap in the canaries and the roads are not busy i would recommend hiring a car and getting out and about, there is so much to see and you can do things cheaper that way than booking trips.
When I booked this holiday I had been looking at a RIU for a bit more money and in hindsight wish I had done so as I must have spent the difference, maybe more eating and drinking out.
If you are vegetarian do not stay here! Only stay here if you can pretty much put up with eating and drinking anything.
If you are unsure about spending a bit more for a better hotel my advice would be to spend the extra.
It didn't ruin our holiday as like I said we never stay in the hotel anyway we like to hire a car and go out every day and gran canaria is a brilliant place with the friendliest people everywhere. The scenery in the mountains is fantastic and the beaches are beautiful. We really enjoyed eating out where we did, and the bars we went to. The first night we ate out we caught a little italian just before closing around midnight, there was nobody else in but they went out of their way to please us. they made me a spaghetti dish full of fresh vegetables and it just hit the spot after the rubbish we had been eating at oasis club. We will Definately be back to gran canaria in the future but Definately not in oasis club.
All rooms are around the pool and will suffer the same noise, stay elsewhere!
