“Pretty Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Just got back from 4 days. Overall a good experience. Got a room for 70 euros a night with breakfast. Staff were really excellent. Room a little dated and could do with an upgrade. Bed hard as a rock and really uncomfortable. Location excellent with a view of the dunes from the balcony. Lots of places to eat very close to the hotel and supermarkets.Yes it's full of Germans mostly older like the reviews say and a lot of English.Would say it is a good option not all good but it is what it is. Hope this helps !

Room Tip: Ask for room with a view of the dunes

Still here on day 13. Great food and great service. A little worried on arrival as exterior looks tired but soon dispelled by staff. Rushed to collect our bags, champagne while reception fill in our forms from our passports. Free upgrade on room. Allocated private table for dinner, free a la carte choice (declined) every day. Pool service good but tired pool. Gardens nice.

Never really sure where the cabaret was but it's not our scene really.

Location is fantastic for walks. This is the No 1 area on the Island and there was a tourist event on 27-30 including a music festival and swim in the sea.

Free wifi in the reception. None in the room though.

Clean and friendly. Lots of German customers as others have said. (their economy must be good!)

4star plus is the rating overall with touches of 5 star staff.

Can't wait for the upgrade but the price will surely be more that the £40 per night per person we paid for half board in sea view!

Great hols...

Room Tip: Markets are a bit samey, better to go bowling. The sellers are pro's and will get the better of...

My first impression was of faded glory, the decor needs a refresh to bring it up to date although the bathroom in the room was fine. The staf were very attentive and efficient, we could not fault the service in the restaurant. The other guest were predominantly older German couples. How the sun beds took the weight of some of those blokes amazes me!

We upgraded to a room in one of the blocks in the garden and at £1 per night it was amazing value for money. We had a lovely veranda although the beds were bruisingly hard. The location of the hotel is perfect and we did some long walks along the beach, but beware, it is a nudist beach and the same demographics apply to the beach as they do to the poolside. We are not talking about people hiiden in the sand dunes here but walking along the shore line. There is a great bar/restaurant next door for lunch or a glass of wine. It has great views of the sunset which was always stunning.

The breakfast was fine with a good choice. Evening meal less impressve I'm afraid, we ate out twice despite paying for half board, just to have some nice Italian food, in Grand Italia. We enjoyed some of the evening entertainment especially the Beatles tribute band. We may go back if there was a special offer. Weather was amazing, 34 degrees every day.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the garden.

From very good memory was telephoned and asked to upgrade from Riu Palace Playa del Inglwa to this one. A big mistake it was full of German gereatrics. Did have a great time riding a motorised chair up and down a corridor! Some very good pre dinner entertainment... a group of Chinese acrobats manage to remove some polystyrene tiles from the ceing of the bar!!! Great location.... nice rooms good toweling robes.. Half board evening meals were very average... Better to eat out.. Would recommend this hotel only if you push for a discount and that's possible.. don't pay full price.

Room Tip: Front overlooking Dunes

We had requested a double room with a sea view, we arrived late and were given a twin bedded room with a view of the car park! When we asked to be moved, the man on reception was difficult and argumentative. The next day he sent us to look at different rooms until we found one we liked but the whole experience made us feel difficult and demanding and was very unpleasant.

On the plus side, communal areas were lovely and spacious, the food was plentiful, varied and delicious, the pool was great, everywhere was immaculately clean, the staff were very pleasant and discreet, the lady who gave yoga, pilates and aqua aerobics classes was wonderful. Evening entertainment was poor though. Drinks were expensive (water was 3 eu). They do not have double beds - if you want a double bed they push 2 singles together - not the same at all! Also the beds were really hard and uncomfortable and had plastic mattresses. Most of the clientele in early September were aged 50+ Also, in the photos the hotel looks as though it overlooks the beach, in fact the gardens open onto the beach but there is another hotel between the beach and this hotel. On balance though, a pleasant, relaxing stay.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

This was my second holiday at the Riu Grand Palace Maspalomas Oasis, the first being about 12 years ago. I must say that this wouldn't have been my first choice of hotel but due to a late change of plans I ended up having to book this hotel. My memories 12 years ago were good but of a slightly dated property with good service and staff... it hasn't changed much over the years.

I was travelling alone for two weeks and the location suited me as it is possibly the closest hotel to Maspalomas beach. You only really need a taxi if you are going to head into Playa for a night out. I had emailed the hotel knowing that 'single' rooms were looking over the entrance and car park. I had requested a garden room at a supplement. I was very grateful when checking in that I had no need to pay the supplement and was offered a double room as a free upgrade, saving me around 420 Euros.

My room was exactly as I had wished, clean and quiet. Typical Rui style, looking over a grassed area and the lighthouse. The bathroom was decent and bed comfortable. I find the whole Rui concept a little dated wherever you stay but it's always as expected.

There are several reasons I do like this hotel, the food here is very good (for a resort hotel) you are given the option of table service or buffet (or a mix of both). Wine is reasonably priced and waiter service excellent. I also like the fact that there is a lot of space between tables and unlike the Villa Del Conde you are not literally eating a foot or so away from the next table. You are allocated a table on arrival, which is also nice and so there is no confusion or rush. Breakfast was good with a very large choice.

An excellent addition to dining is Crystal, which I had no difficulty in booking and at no extra charge. This is modern cuisine and I enjoyed the food very much. All courses were very good and very well executed.

The gardens are great here and there is a lot of space, the palm oasis itself is very attractive and you can walk or find or drag a sun bed anywhere. The pool area is a little more busy but when you have such a great beach on your doorstep I didn't find the need to use the pool, preferring the ocean. There are private changing booths and showers dotted around the grounds. The showers and clean-up area just through the gates to the beach are a godsend and there is a jacuzzi to jump into to rid yourself of the last bit of beach on your body before returning to your room.

I found the service in the hotel great, I never had any problems with language and my room was very well looked after by the cleaning staff. The lady who serviced my room was polite and never interrupted me when the do not disturb sign was up after a late night out.

Like some of the other reviewers, I am a regular to this part of Gran Canaria and recently stayed in the Villa Del Conde, this is a very different hotel. It's less 'flash' but it's still very good and but more traditional. Clients are older but this visit there were quite a few families with very young children... it's really not the type of place teenagers would be highly entertained in.

I have read that it will be closed and rebuilt in the next year or so. I'll be honest the other hotels probably do have more to keep a more modern crowd satisfied. However, if you are booked here then it still offers a quiet, traditional type of holiday. I switched off completely and had a great break.

I expect the rebuild will have to keep the Oasis garden element as this is what makes the hotel different. The staff and service give this hotel it's 5 star status but the building is what lets it down slightly. So I won't be sad to let this one go and look forward to seeing what they are going to build next year. The location is prime, so I hope that it's going to be something special.

There was really nothing I could complain about at this place as my stay was exactly as expected, nothing was below standard. I just think I did enjoy the spa's, pools and modernity of some of the nearby hotel better... but it's still a quality choice for a relaxing vacation.

Room Tip: If you are travelling single then you may want to upgrade to a double and avoid those rooms looking...

Great location, great weather, great beach.
we went half board and felt that breakfast was the best meal of the day, freshly made juices, fruit, breads, hot or cold options. Dinner was a little stuffy, plus you have to pay for all drinks including the water.Staff were very nice and friendly.
