“excellent hotel and holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2009

This is a lovely hotel with great staff, facilities and location. My 19month daughter, my husband and I absolutely loved it. A great family atmosphere and a superb resort in Gran Canaria. We stayed for a week but should have stayed longer. We will definately go back again.

My husband and I spent two weeks at this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed your holiday. Here are a few of our thoughts / comments:

The hotel itself is nice but does need a bit of T.L.C. here and there. A lick of paint, bathrooms touched up some minor DIY, etc. We weren't happy with our first room and so asked to be moved. The Reception staff gave us keys to another room and asked us to go and look at it to make sure it was ok for us. Thankfully it was. We found out that double rooms are actually the smallest room type and they do feel a little claustrophobic.
Some people complained about the air conditioning but we thought it was very good. In fact we had to put th blankets on some nights.
The rooms have a safety deposit box which there is no charge for. There is also a small fridge in the room, which is handy. You can get large bottles of mineral water from reception at no cost - it's included.

We were a little worried that the main restaurants would be overcrowded and that we would be waiting in long queues for our food. They weren't and we didn't. As this was only our second time A.I. we were a little worried about the quality of the food as our last experience many years ago wasn't great. The food was absolutely wonderful. Spoilt for choice and I've no idea how some people can complain. I am a very fussy eater, especially fussy with meats but everything was spot on. Our only complaint is the weight we gained when we were there but you can't blame the hotel for that!!

The other restaurant, which has themed evenings, is also very good but not as much choice and you have to book for this. Book early if you want the later sitting as this slot gets booked up first. Probably because it is so hot at the earlier time.

The pool area is nice, but I agree with previous comments that sunbeds are a little too close together and if the person next to you puts their parasol up it blocks your sunlight.

There are three pools, including one childrens pool and I think the hotel should make at least one of the pools 'adult only'.

Entertainment. Mmm. Not great. We seen one good professional act, we missed the Chinese acrobats that were meant to be very good. Although the Riu Animation Team work very hard and put a lot of effort in to the shows, they aren't great. As for having Karaoke, I'm afraid I don't think it is acceptable entertainment of a four star hotel.

The outside bar was nice but if you want a soft seat - get there early. The disco wasn't up too much but ok for a late drink if you want one. The theatre bar inside closes at midnight and reopens at 12.30am. However, it is very quiet. We didn't go too frequent and when we did, it was often for one drink. You will probably find yourself sitting with other nationalities and not Brits. Only one night did we sit with English and Scots.

The hotel and the area are quite quiet and not what my husband and I are used to. In saying this, we had a very chilled, enjoyable holiday and did meet some nice people that we hope to bump into again, possibly at this hotel! You aren't far from Playa del Ingles should you want something a bit more up beat and it doesn't cost much in a taxi. Can't tell you what it is like at night as we only ventured there during the day. We were quite happy to sit chatting at the hotel bar.

All in all, we would go back to this hotel we just think some small adjustments / DIY would make all the difference at not too much of a cost. Hope you enjoy your holiday wherever you go! :-)

The hotel was beautiful, the weather was perfect. You can walk out of the back of the hotel to the sea, although there are cliffs making the water inaccessible. We walked to the beach from the hotel and it took between ten and fifteen minutes each way, and the beach was crowded, although beautiful.

The staff was attentive and courteous. Most waitstaff and the receptionist speak Spanish, German and at times very limited English. The rooms were nice and always kept immaculate. We would go out for lunch for an hour leaving the "please clean room" sign on the doorknob, and it would always be spotless when we returned.

The food in the main dining rooms and the poolside late breakfast and lunch was ok, not bad,
not great. There was always pizza, pasta, french fries and stuff like that available, the majority of which seemed to have been fried in vegetable oil and tasted somewhat bland. The international and local cuisine I found to be hit and miss. I tried to have some of everything offered though, and I never found any of the food to be offensive.

The Mexican and Asian dinners were both excellent, particularly the Mexican. We were only able to reserve three dinners because we thought of it too late, but wish we had eaten there for every dinner. The bar service was great, they offered good quality drinks, although the Pina Colada etc were all blended and most of the time they consisted of more foam than liquid. They all tasted good, if a little light on the alcohol.

The pools were nice and never too crowded. The hot tub in the center of the three pools was low on water and the jets were sputtering at thin air, and the pools were much hotter than the hot tub, so we stayed in the two bigger pools.

It was always a bit of a struggle to find two empty sunbeds, people would lay towels on them all and we would walk for ten minutes around the pool area, trying to find two empty ones. We eventually just started moving towels and placing our own down.

The towel service was a bit odd; you're given a beach towel per person when you check in, and to exchange it you have to be at the pool between 9am and noon to give your dirty towels to a staff member who will give you clean ones. We weren't up that early most of the time though.

We didn't check out the disco, but the two table tennis sets were ok, and the billiard tables were small and cost an euro per game. You had to put down a deposit of ten euros for two table tennis rackets and a ball also.

We read on the Riu website and elsewhere that there was Bowling on the premises, but when we asked we were told that it was a ten minute ride to the closest one, which was disappointing. Apart from that we had an excellent stay.

Small tip on the side: the SuperCat catamaran tour is excellent. The views of the coast are beautiful, you can see parts of Tenerife from the Catamaran and the dip in the Atlantic ocean is great fun. Sun screen is a necessity here, though.

arrived to a very warm welcome from Adrian the receptionist, rooms lovely, staff very helpful and friendly, hotel set in fantastic grounds on the sea front. we all met in gran canaria last year and decided to do it again. We had a fantastic holiday and never stopped laughing from beginning to end. the hotels facilities are great and the 24 hour all inclusive did help with a lot of our laughs. not just local spirits available. the aqualand is a must, regardless of how old you are, its for the big kids in all of us. Very impressed with Riu and will definitely be using this hotel group again. in fact we are already planning which one to stay in next time.

Great stay at the Riu Clubhotel Gran Canaria in Melonares.. We took 2 teenagers with us in July 2009. Flights on time, with Thomsons, the hotel welcomed us and another flight late in the evening with a cold buffet and drinks, which was a nice welcome.. Hotel provides free large bottles of water and theres a fridge in the room. Rooms all pleasant and clean/bright. Bathroom clean and good, free toiletries. Food and drinks were pleasant and ok. Large dining areas so plenty of room to sit and eat. A wide range of food and snacks and always something to have, whatever time of the day. If you stay, book the Mexican night at the snack bar between Thursdays and Tuesdays, the buffet is great. All the restaurants are buffet style but the chefs are on hand too.
Pretty promenade to the back of the hotel with some nice bars, restaurants and shops.
The only downside we had was that you had to put the towel on the sunbed around the pool early in the morning, even though the hotel has a policy that you cannot do it. Everyone did. Some english there when we stayed, but many other nationalities too.

.We travelled as a family group of myself and my husband (63 and 62) and our daughter, son in law and 1 year old grandson. As said by nearly everyone else, this is a lovely hotel with very friendly staff. It is kept scrupulously clean in all areas. The only thing we didn't like was the fact that the outside terrace which extends all along the back of the hotel didn't have a non smoking section so you could never get away from the smoke, particularly in the evenings. The only option was to go and sit inside which we didn't always want to do. Our room on the second floor was, unfortunately, right over the bar area so the smoke drifted up onto the balcony from below and meant we couldn't leave the window open overnight as the smoke came into the room ( we prefer real air as opposed to air conditioning). However, this was only a small factor and no way detracted from the overall holiday experience. Yes, the sunbeds got covered with towels early in the day and were quite often left unoccupied all day. We just moved the towels off and used the sunbeds and out of a 14 day holiday, only had one run-in with the occupants. There are three pools (plus a kiddies pool)and they range in depth so there is one to suit all levels of swimmers. If you want to go to a beach, just go out of the hotel at the back and onto a promenade which stretches from Maspalomas to Melonares. The Riu is situated about half way between the two so a 10 minute stroll in either direction will take you to nice beaches with bars, restaurants and shops. The food in the hotel was good and very varied and how anybody could complain about variety I do not know.

We travelled with Thomsons and I must give mention to Jan the in-hotel holiday rep. She is the best rep we have ever come across. She knows her island inside out and she always seemed to be genuinly interested in the wellbeing of all her clients and remembered names which always makes you feel a bit special. She is someone special, Thomsons, please take note.

There isn't much else I could add that hasn't been said before, so go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Just got back from 7 nights at this hotel, wish we were staying longer ! Found staff to be very friendly & hotel was very clean. All the food we had was excellent, if you coudn't find somthing you like then you must be a fussy eater ! As previously written the sun beds are a little too close but if you disregard the non reserve rule (as most people did, there were towels on beds at 07.45) and get ones on the end of the rows you can move them around to give yourself a bit more room. Pools never seemed to be crowded but were perhaps a little small. Jan the Thomson rep was very friendly and helpfull. Aqualand was a bit of a let down for the money it costs, there is only really 7 good rides. we went on the super cat which takes you around the west coat line. not cheap but worth the money.
Overal we had a great time and would go back again.
