This hotel is really nice with friendly and attentive staff and a luxurious feel to the place. The whole place is clean and fresh looking and the staff make you feel at home. We stayed in an appartment which was really spacious and very well equiped and cleaned. Here are a few things to consider.
The hotel complex is on top of a hill and is some what isolated from the main tourist areas of Maspalomas beach and Play del Ingles. It's a good long climb back up if you wanted to walk. Taxi's are available to take you to the two places mentioned and the charges are reasonable at 3 Euros for Maspalomas Beach or 4 Euros for Playa.
There is an option to go half board (breakfast and evening buffet meals). We looked at the evening buffet and decided not to take up this offer. It didn't look that appertising if I am honest. We did try the A la Carte but wasn't impressed with that either. Plenty of people were eating there so it may be that it's down to personal choice. If you choose not to eat at the hotel, there are a couple of places near by (a Chinese and a Grill) or you'll need to go down to the beach to eat and you would have to include the price of a taxi.
The pools in the complex are really nice. Lots of sunbeds and some of them do get booked up early by some folks with their towels, even though they discourage this. There are activities for the children and some for adults during the day. There is a pool bar/restuarant and they have happy hours before and after the lunch period. The beer is a little expensive at Euro 3.40 for 400ml.
There is a shop on the complex that is a little more expensive than the SPAR shop that is just around the corner. There is a local market hall down the hill and to the left. It's about a 20 minute walk and the reception can give you directions. Taxi there is 3 euros. On Wednesday and Saturday other traders come in to sell a range of things from Aloe Vera to t-shirts. Also, on Sunday there is a 2nd hand market (car boot sale) at the Faro2 Shopping Centre. Faro2 centre seems to be on the wane. A lot of shops are closing but there are still a couple of restaurants open.
Recommend visits to Porto Mogan and Porto Rico as well as a trip into the mountains. You can do this by taxi or using the local bus services. There are various groups offering guided tours of the mountains or you can hire a car. Local buses are really good value but the timings are to be taken with a pinch of salt. The hotel also offers a free bus service from Sonneland (where the hotel is) down to Maspalomas Beach every couple of hours from 9:30. Return journeys start at 14:30.
The local beach Las Dunas are renowned for Nudity and for the Gay Scene. It's a really nice walk (about 50mins) between Maspalomas and Playa Del Ingles but be prepared to see lots of naked people. The male gay scene is nearest to Maspalomas and the mixed is the towards the other end. You won't feel out of place walking there - thousands seem to go along for a look, if not to partake in nude sunbathing or even nude walk.
Transfers from the airport take about 20 minutes. The hotel offers a pick up bus service that cost us 30 euros (for two) each way. Normal taxi prices would appear to be 65 euros.
Overall the hotel and area is a great place if you like to rest and tan by the pool, have a quiet holiday and don't mind paying for taxi's or hiring a car to get around. I will certainly go back and will enjoy it more having learned a few of the things mentioned above.
