“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equals than others”. And so it is true of hotels, but Club Torso is the real pick of the bunch. Having stayed in other hotels in Gran Carary, we were keen to find something that was a cut above the rest, but still at a reasonable price. In Club Torso, we think we found a gem.
From the moment we stepped into the hotel, to be greeted by Martijn, until we left 9 days later, we enjoyed probably one of the most relaxing and trouble free holidays we have had for a long time. We have been to Gran Canary twice before and stayed in similar rated hotels – but nothing beats Club Torso in terms of its facilities, the way the owners keep the place sparkling and are always on hand with advice – with a smile. No one needs any lessons in customer satisfaction, unlike many other places on Gran Canary.
This is a small resort – and that is part of the magic; this is a place to unwind and relax. Music plays in the background by the pool and I mean background – it is never too loud.
The rooms have been recently refurbished and are kept meticulously clean by June, who unlike most room service personnel enjoys a chat and a laugh. Our joke on the first morning about the spire of Chesterfield’s church (June’s home town in the UK), bought many days of jokes and banter between us. Rooms are cleaned daily and towels changed whenever you needs require.
The bed is European King Size, which is larger than most beds one finds in European resort hotels. Not only was that a pleasant change, but it is probably one of the most comfortable beds that we have slept in. Richard and Martijn are to be congratulated on buying quality large beds. My only comment is that the quality of the lower sheet on the mattress did not match the thread quality of the duvet sheet. The bungalow has two hobs, adequate cookware and china and a fridge. We liked the fact that our bungalow had a filter coffee maker and even a kettle. Both were used daily. The room has a 32 inch flat screen TV and audio system which included an iphone socket. There is a safe for which there is a charge of 2 Euros a day. We had no problem with the charge – it gives guest a choice rather than adding another 2 Euros onto the daily rate.
Unlike most smaller hotels on Gran Canary, breakfast was included. The continental breakfast was more than average and we were delightfully surprised that scrambled, fried, boiled or omelette eggs were offered at no extra charge. One small comment, the filter coffee which was available “on tap” was not as warm as we would prefer.
We ate at the hotel on a few occasions. The food is excellent and portions could not be described as small – especially salads!” We enjoyed excellent company around the full bar. Martijn and Richard are excellent hosts – never seen blue tonic water before, which Martijn has christened “smurf water”.
Anyone wanting the “highlife”, the yumbo centre is a 20 minute walk away or 3 Euros in a taxi. We hired a car and there was always plenty of free on street parking by the hotel.
There are very few hotels which we would recommend, but Club Torso is one. If you are looking for a relaxing small hotel with a friendly staff, meticulously clean surroundings, a very comfortable bed and hopefully lots of sun – then you will not go wrong by booking into this gem.
All of the staff, Martijn, Richard, Marcel and June made this a holiday that will make us return.
