We didn't have the best of starts with this hotel. We arrived at 4:30am, and as we had got a really good deal through the internet, was allocated one of the rooms at the back on the third floor. Not entirely unexpected, but we like to spend time relaxing on the balcony of an evening, and couldn't do this with the view and noise of a building site. However, we were not disturbed by the noise at all with the doors closed.
Then we had a fiasco with the room safe. We made four trips down to reception to sort this out as our card, which was supposedly registered, wasn't working. In the end, we were told that they'd send up an engineer, and to go back up to our room to wait. Well, we waited, and we waited. In the end I phoned back down to reception, and they told me that the engineer was on call out from Playa del Ingles, and as it was Sunday it could be a long wait. Nice!!! We gave up in the end and carried our valuables around with us all day on day one. That night, surprise surprise, the safe still wasn't working, and when we checked with reception again, our room card hadn't even been registered. Unbelievable!!!!
The only other gripe that I've got about this hotel is that the service in the restaurants isn't that great. And what happened to "service with a smile"? I certainly don't think that the service in general in this hotel is of 4 star standard - it's not what we've come to expect from similar hotels in this area on previous visits. We did find the staff in Alameda to be much friendlier and efficient than Atlantico of an evening though for the buffet.
That's where the gripes end and the good stuff starts, hence my four star review. The hotel and the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. The pools are fantastic, and even though this hotel is huge, I didn't feel as though it was too overrun during the day. We were naughty and reserved the sunbeds to get the best spot - but hey - everybody else is doing it. A lot of the sunbeds are within the gardens, i.e. in the shade for much of the day, so the beds in the sun tend to get reserved (be up and 8:30 to get the pick of them). I'm personally embarrassed to do this, but come 10am after breakfast, there's towels down on all of the best beds (we witnessed some beds in front of us reserved from first thing, the occupants didn't turn up until 3:30, then left after half an hour - it makes me so cross!!).
The rooms are nice and spacious, but again perhaps a little basic for 4 stars. A lot of people have mentioned about the beds. They were very comfortable, but were on wheels and we falling to bits on the corners. The bathroom was great though, and lots of wardrobe space for all of your clothes.
The food was also of a very good quality. It does get a little repetitive, but there is a good handful of restaurants down the road if you fancy a change of scenery. We ate at Restaurant Faro on our last night, and the food here was excellent. The surrounding area outside of the hotel is very nice - upmarket - with a good amount of shops, restaurants and bars, but is very classy with no leary drunks in sight. All of the hotels in this area are +4 star, and that's one of the major factors which attracted us to this resort in the first place. It's quite a pricey area, but you get what you pay for in my opinion, and you don't go on holiday to scrimp (if you want a cheap holiday, don't come here).
I would return to this hotel in the future as it was one of the most restful holidays that we have ever had. I agree with some of the points made in the recent negative reviews, but overall our experience was very good.
