“Perfect Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2010

My wife & I decided on The Hotel Vasco Da Gama for the perfect place for our honeymoon. We just wanted somewhere quiet where it could just be the 2 of us & that's exactly what we got.
We got to the hotel quite late on the Saturday night so it wasn't until Sunday morning when we looked out from the balcony onto the beach & the sea. A beautiful view, one that I wish I could look out to every morning.
We would go for our breakfast at about 9o'clock which would have anything you'd want for breakfast.
Swimming Pool was lovely, the sunbathing areas round about the pool & the umbrellas was great. There was also a wee snack bar where we would get a couple of drinks & then get some lunch (if you do goto the snack bar & ask for chips, just get one portion between 2 of you). Beer was nice & cold which is a bonus & the staff there were fantastic.
The evening meal was predominantly fish, which was fine by me, although there would be lasagne or spaghetti some nights.
The bar had live music although we would just sit on the bar balcony where although busy, it was quiet & we could just have a nice conversation whilst watching the sunset over the sea & the beach, then when it got dark, the stars twinkling above us & the moon smiling down on the sea.
The rooms were just what we needed, a place to sleep & shower. They were kept very clean though.
Hopefully one day, we'll go back there.

With our 40th wedding anniversary coming up we spent some time thinking about how we would like to celebrate it and decided there was nowhere we would rather be than Hotel Vasco da Gama in Monte Gordo, Algarve. We just love this hotel and the friendly, courteous staff there. In fact, we just keep returning year after year. The hotel is right on the beautiful beach and located close to shops, restaurants and bars. It is set in lovely gardens, has a fantastic pool area, tennis courts, mini golf, children's playground and a gym. The pool is probably the best hotel pool we ever seen. We booked B & B and the breakfast buffet is excellent with choices to suit many nationalities and good fresh food. There is a wonderful beach bar/restaurant with great food and terrific service. The snack bar at the pool is also very good and has great service. In the evening the bar and terrace bar overlooking the beach are lovely, sipping champagne as the sun goes down with a wonderful view - something to dream about until we return. Our bedroom was spacious and clean, very comfortable beds and loads of drawer and wardrobe space. Had views of the gardens and the sea from our balcony, which was lovely, and we appreciated the air conditioning, as it got hot while we were there. When we arrived, we had a lovely fruit basket and bottle of water in our room and on our anniversary the hotel delivered a beautiful bouquet containing red roses and lilies amongst the flowers and another basket of fruit and bottle of champagne. All very nice and very much appreciated. The reception area had some magnificent floral displays during our stay. All the public areas of the hotel are beautifully maintained and so clean, they sparkle. As already stated we just love it and the good old-fashioned service they provide. We will be back!
Helpful tips for holidaying here
Monte Gordo is a lively little town with a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants. One of our favorites is Ed and Willems, a Dutch bar/restaurant right on the front. We also enjoy Eurobar and Jopels. If however you are looking for late nightlife and clubs etc, it is not the place to go. Mostly quiet by midnight.

Just stayed for two weeks travelling with Thomas Cook Holidays. A super hotel located right on an 8 mile walking beach which was absolutely fantastic. Very few Brits and very popular with the Spanish & Portuguese which made it a very family orientated resort.
Negatives....Hotel dining room too small for a full hotel ....tables very close together.Avoid taking breakfast between 08.45 & 9.30am and dining room can get hot at times when its busy....Expect to see kids in dining room at 8.30pm because the continentals dont leave their children in the hotel rooms at night alone.....Not a real problem unless you have a screamer next to you..Lots of steps around the hotel so a bit of a concern for the infirm.
Positives.....Food & service absolutely excellent...Best breakfast abroad for years.
Cleanliness and rooms super. Big pillows and great beds...Maid service super.
Pool and surrounding areas superb...Deep pool and seperate kids pool...Lots of space, beds and umbrellas.. Walkway to direct access to beach 200 metres at most and hotel in good position for resort centre and restaurants. Reception staff can come across a bit dour but work on them and you can get a smile.Having said that they are efficient and have the answers..Plenty of comfortable rooms around the hotel for relaxation and entertainment most nights if you want it...Pretty average on the whole but the Magician is worth a watch as he is good.......This is a hotel we would return to and recommend to friends so that sums it up.....A well managed hotel all round no wonder its popular with Europeans especially the Dutch.

This was our second trip to Monte Gordo having stayed at the Alcazaar last year. The Vaso is located right on the beach and also has a nice big pool area with plenty of sunloungers. Our room was on the top floor with great views across the beach and a balcony that had table and chairs but also 2 sunloungers , fantastic ! The hotel is dated but is kept very clean and the maid service is excellent. We booked half board and the breakfast and evening meals were both varied and of a high standard we only ate out once in our stay. Monte Gordo is a quiet resort suited to mature couples with a massive beach and a good selection of restaurants and a few of bars. Having only eaten outside hotel once we cannot comment on restaurant food but drink is cheap and service is very friendly. A special thanks must go to Karl & Toni who run Moby's bar a great place just across the road from the Vasco where Karl introduced me to "super bock stout" a nice alternative to local lager, thanks for all the pens guys ha ha. If you are looking to relax on a huge beach and not get ripped of in your hotel or resort the Vasco and Monte Gordo is a great choice.

We had a lovely time at this hotel despite getting stranded by the flight ban drama. The room was lovely and spacious with a large flat screen tv. It had the biggest wardrobe I have ever seen, one which I had to climb inside to reach the clothes!
The food was lovely with plenty of choice. My only complaint would be the wait for a table at nearly every meal. The restaurant needs to be bigger with more tables to suit the number of guests.
The snack bar and pool area were good, always plenty of sunloungers whatever time of day you went out. If you fancy a change the beach is on the doorstep.
The staff were really friendly and even sent a cake (made of 100 profitta rolls!) and a bottle of wine up to the room on my birthday.
The location is good for the beach and Monte Gordo has lots of shops. There is also a harbour town a few miles down the road which has lots more shops, cafes etc.
I would definitely go here again but not in April. We were lucky to get 9 sunny days. The weather turned just before the airports closed and the third week of our stay was constant rain. The sun did not come out once in 6 days which would be awful if you just went for a week. This is not unusual in April apparantly.

Hotel sits right on beach, we paid extra for seaview which meant despite the weather turning cold and windy making it impoosible to sit on balcony, you could lie in bed and look out over beach and sea. The public rooms are lovely but bedrooms stuck in the 1960's athough spotless and beds and pillows very comfortable. Entertainment is mostly low key music although one night there was a magician who was very good. The British were very much in the minority, as a result the menu is very European, I think every type of fish (even fish fingers) you could name was on the menu during our stay. The salads are very fresh, as I said lots of fish and very little meat, little choice of deserts, we found something to eat every night but it did get a bit repetative. It is nice however to be amongst so many different nationalities. A visit to Villa Real and a trip acroos to Spain by ferry is a must. There is a good variety of shops and eating places in Monte Gordo. This is not a holiday for those looking for the high life but if you are looking for a relaxing time this is for you.

We stayed B&B in a sea-view room (extra). Excellent location and breakfasts were fine, plenty of choice and food warm. Rooms were a little dated but very clean & comfortable. Outside areas were also very clean, with the exception occasionally of the adult pool which had quite a lot of dead insects in it (not very inviting). However, because there was direct access to the beach from the hotel, this was not a calamity. Loads of good restaurants/bars & coffee shops etc nearby. Staff very friendly & helpful. Would definitely return.
