Even though the sea is beautiful it is also quite dangerous for kids and people who don't swim very well, as the waves are strong and the current very heavy and tiring. Besides that the dunes you have to cross to get to the beach are inside the "Pinhal de Leiria" the biggest pine forest in Portugal and one of the largest in the world. It was set by a Portuguese king - D. Dinis - on the 1300's, and it has been kept quite nicely, sometimes fustigated by some fires, but still keeps its grandeur. The beach is better between Pedrogão and Vieira as there is much less people, but the beaches in these áreas do not have life guards.
