“Very Nice Place; Excellent Service and Hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2009

Stayed at room #4 in the new wing of the Challet at the end of September, 2009; the room was huge and nicely arranged, although I guess lacked the old charm you may find in the older rooms located at the Challet itself (the new wing is a separate building, located right beside the Challet); the new spa was not yet operating; breakfast is served at the Challet building, an amazingly refurbished old manor house which almost transports you back in time (albeit we have not seen the Challet rooms); service was excellent: very personal and accommodating; Alcobaca is a charming and quaint little place, boasting a beautiful monastery, one of the nicest and grandest we have seen during our short 6-day tour of the north half of Portugal; after visiting the monastery enjoy the afternoon sipping coffee or drinking beer at one of the nice eateries skirting the place, as we did; 1 day should do the trick.

Excellent service and accommodation, very high standard and helpful staff. I can't think of anything to say except perfect in every way. We asked for eggs at breakfast as an extra and they willing arranged this for us. Also had the choice of a room in the main house or the annexe. We opted for the annexe as the room was larger and had a hugh bathroom, it was still well presented. There is a spa which we didn't try. No restuarant but Alcobaca has many good restuarants in particular the PORTA ? Recommended by the hotel

We spent just a night at hotel Chalet Fonte Nova and the experience was very great! Very polite staff, very nice rooms in the old part of the building (chalet).
First our reservation was meant to be for the new annex of the building but they luckily upgraded us upon arrival and we stayed in the older, more beautiful side of the hotel.

Overall this is a great hotel with all the amenities and really close to the monastery of Alcobaca. But the only bad part of it is the location. The towm of Alcobasa is pretty unimpressive by itself and this hotel lies in the middle of the district with appartment buildings all around it - so your view out of the window could not be described as romantic. But try to book in the old part of the building...

This hotel is great. We stayed in a large triple room in the newer part of the chalet, and the room was absolutely amazing. Extremely large , yet they managed to keep it cozy . THe room is well-staffed, with air-conditioning, tv, a great bathroom with 2 sinks, and a small balcony (though ours didn't have a great view)

Breakfast is served in the main house, and consists of cold-cuts, cheese, coffee, yogurt, croissants and pastries. There is also fruit, but the fruit was rather dull. Everything else was great.

The staff is sweet. They are very cordial and extremely hospitable. One of the staff members stays over night, and is available at the downstairs bar to serve drinks, open wine bottles, etc.

While the town is quiet, it's still worth a stop-over. the Church is beautiful, and the beach town of Nazare is only a 10 minute cab ride away. There are also buses going there. We spent 2 nights in Alcobaca, with one day devoted primarily to Nazare. We had one of the best dinners of our Portugal trip in Nazare.

THere is a great restaurant in town. Unfortunately we forgot the name, but it was recommended by the challet, so I'm sure they'll give you the name if you stop there.

Most of all, you must try the cherry liquor (gínginha). The one made in Alcobaca is much better than the ones from Lisbon.

Overall, a very highly recommended stay.
