“best choice in Alcobaça”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

there are good and not so good aspects about this hotel. on the downside you have the fact that it is not new, in fact it is far from new, and the floors and walls haven't been changed, so they don't look so attractive.

however, the upside largely compensates, since the hotel has the best location possible, since it is near the center of everything, yet it far enough from the noise.
the service is also highly recommended, all the staff are extremely nice, and everybody makes a real effort for the guests to feel confortable.

We were fortunate in having a room with a balcony overlooking the monastery. We were able to spend time in the evening feeling the night air. Unfortunately, there was only one chair.

Two other things that reduced our enjoyment - the bed was so hard. I resorted to sleeping on the floor on the second night. The shower head wet the towels at the end of the bath if turned on whilst outside the bath. Unfortunately, I am a slow learner so we dried ourselves with wet towels more than once :)

On the positive side, the staff at breakfast were very friendly and accommodating. The food was good too and was more Portuguese than elsewhere we'd stayed.

Would we stay here again? Yes, but would insist on a bed that was fit for purpose. :)

This is a 3 star hotel and, in Portugal, it usually means we will find comfortable, clean rooms and nice food during our stay. In Santa Maria it means you will get rooms with old, dirty carpets, hard beds, flat uncomfortable pillows. We booked 2 rooms. One with two beds and a triple room with 2 beds + one for a child. In both rooms the carpets were full of stains. Beds were hard, the pillows were thick as paper sheets. The extra bed, a folding one, very old (for my nephew) was complete rubbish, it sank in the middle. Both rooms had a little fridge and A/C. Both were old but in working conditions. Bathroom was ok. Breakfast was acceptable, it had some variety but the food wasn´t of much quality. Now, i have been in many 3 star hotels and ALL were better than this. Some may say the hotel is not expensive but i find the prices too steep for the service provided. It´s not clean or comfortable, i wonder if they know what the word maintenance means! A warning! The elevator! I got stuck in it. Don´t let a hair near the door or the elevator will block. We had to ring the bell and the maintenance man came to help. He made the point of telling us the door has a very sensible sensor and that we came too close. What about putting a sign in the elevator´s door warning the clients about the prehistoric elevator that will block you if you sneeze on the door! This is not a good hotel, so avoid staying more than 1 night.

The hotel has a very good location. You only have to cross the square to visit the Alcobaça Monastery. There are also a couple of restaurants on walking distance.

There is free parking. But the underground parking is quite small, so I think you have to be early on the busy days to get a spot there (but there is a bigger parking place a bit further). We arrived at 4pm, and only half of the parking was filled.

WiFi worked perfectly in our room and was free (didn't try anywhere else). Our room was clean and spacious. We didn't hear any noises from other guests.

Breakfast was more than ok. All staff members we met, spoke English. Good price/quality relationship.

If you come to Alcobaca to see the former Cistercian monastery, which most tourists do, you can't beat the Hotel Santa Maria. The hotel - large and a bit olde worlde - overlooks the huge monastery buildings and the adjacent square and represents great value for money. The square is surrounded by streets offering restaurants and shopping.

Hotel parking is free and secure. Wifi is also free. There was a strong wifi signal in our room. The room was clean and spacious and if the view of the grassy bank behind us wasn't great, we didn't hear a murmur all night - well apart from the dripping cistern in the loo.

We appreciated BBC World on TV. No desk and chair in the room but a comfy armchair. If one looked closely one could see signs of modernisation that had left a few wire ends showing. The double bed was firm, which I like. Breakfast was adequate and a bargain at the room price.

Staff were helpful. For a one-night stay, which we had, the hotel was just fine.

Excellent location, the straff was great. There was free parking. Dont leave the car on the street or you´ll get a ticket. Restaurants at a walking distance, good and cheap. Breakfast was just ok. Wireless internet did not work in the room, the guy said it was my computer, but it happened to other people too. The mattress of our bed was broken which we only realize late in the night when it was too late. Horrible night sleep specially for my wife. The mattress was really hard too. Overall, good hotel for a 3 star.
