“Wonderful Secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2008

You don't have many accomodation choices in Flam especially on a budget. Based on favorable reviews we chose this property. The apartment was immaculate and beautifully decorated. It exceeded our expecations.

Little did we know how important the kitchen would be to us. The food options in Flam are either fast food type food (burgers/dogs) or cruise like buffets. We chose to use our wonderful kitchen and cook all of our meals. It saved us a ton of money and a bunch of bad food experiences. We were one minute from the Coop which was the local grocery store.

The owners did have rules to follow but nothing you wouldn't do for your own home. This was a non-issue for us but if you are messy and require someone to turn down your bed, this is not a place for you. It is an apartment, not a full service hotel.

A couple little things we wished the apartment had were pepper, sugar, oil, etc. The kitchen was outfitted with cooking utensils/equipment only, not seasonings or condiments. For short stays, the necessities would have been nice to have. No one wants to spend money on sugar but this is a minor complaint.

Flam was beautiful when the crowds left and 3 days was the perfect amount of time to explore Flam and the areas around it. I highly recommend the Kings Path Kayak tour.

What a beautiful location, with every room having a balcony looking out on the fjord or the mountains. The owners were super picky about the rooms, and rightly so! That's the only way they can keep their place so immaculate. They were also super helpful giving us maps, helping us mail our tourist purchases back home, and providing great advice for whatever questions we had.

The room was so clean and so new. The kitchen had everything necessary for meals. The beds were soft and comfortable, and the living area very nice, with tons of channels on the satellite TV. Also, we had free access to the laundry room while we were there- which was perfect for keeping the travel-worn clothing clean.

There is no breakfast provided, but your money is well spent here. Just grab a few things at the local grocery market (the Coop), and you will be just fine as far as meals.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who prefers quiet, cleanliness, great views, and a cabin feel.

This is the best apartment hotel we had stayed since our arrival to Scandinavia. The hotel is conveniently located near all vicinity which is just few steps away from Flam rail, Tourist information centre & Super market. The Hotel is great for family and small group. It is very clean, nicely decorated living room, well equipped kitchen and a beautiful view of the harbour. We were very glad that the owner stood up late close to midnight to welcome us on our very late arrival. We will stay in this hotel when we visit Flam again the next time.

We stayed in Flam for one night, and I wish we'd stayed for more! It's a very small town, but there are many things you can do in the region.

First, the apartment is beautiful! The apartment is nicely decorated and very modern. With the price of eating out in Norway SO expensive, it was a treat to be able to go to the local grocery store and get some supplies. Saving money on food made this place so worthwhile! Plus, when you have your own balcony with beautiful views, why waste time in some stuffy hotel smorgasbord?

While you are in Flam, you can take a boat trip down the Naeroyfjord. You can rent your own motor boat from the Flam Marina (note: make sure to check that they have filled up the gas tank!). You can also rent a car from the marina to explore the area. You can visit some of the nearby small towns via boat or car. It's a busy town during the day (with the railway and boat traffic), but after everyone leaves at night, you have the town to yourself!

  • Liked — Everything - the view, the cleanliness, the comfortable bed!
  • Disliked — I wish I'd stayed longer

Positives:

Spotless, new, large-sized "apartment" was a terrific value at shoulder-season prices. Nice kitchen area in each room. Huge modern bathroom. Free access to laundry near the room was a major help in the middle of a trip. Very close to train depot, boat dock and decent views of the fjord. Easy walk to the few locations in "town." Easy walk to hiking. Friendly staff. Quiet. Security-minded.

Negatives:

Location in small depot area is practical, but not quaint. Owners were quite particular about their place, and extremely cautious about the cleanliness of the rooms, literally inspecting the entire apartment down to the utensils before allowing us to check out... that said, it's tough to balance keeping a really nice place with not appearing off-puttingly fastidious. Appeared that the only heat source was a relatively small portable radiator unit. At the co-located gift shop, had to compete with gift shop customers for check-in/check-out. Multiple emails for reservations went unanswered, and booking by phone was not a polished English experience, but adequate. No free breakfast.

Overall, the room and convenient location were so great, any negatives were very easily overlooked.

By the way, don't miss the tremendous nearby micro-brewery that looks like a stave church.

This is a great place to stay in Flam. Our apartment was really beautifully kitted out with lots of attention to detail and very comfortable. The weather was really terrible when we were there and it was a very convenient spot to dry off and get a nice warm shower. Good price too for Norway.

Do not go to Norway and miss Flamm! My husband and I stayed in these apartments for 2 nights and wished we had more time. The apartments are located right on the fjord, allowing for amazing views as you lounge on the porch. The apartments are spotless and very new--ours had a fireplace, stainless steel kitchen with dishes, fridge, and dishwasher, a huge bathroom with tub, shower and vanity, and a large tv area with satellite TV and plenty of seating. Additionally, the owners gave us complimentary use of the laundry room. This is an excellent value for Norway and I can't wait to make it back there some day. Note - the owners run the gift shop on the 1st floor.
