When planning our stopover at Flam, the reports gave expectations of a tourist place with station and ferry port. Accommodation seemed in short supply and June predicted to be busy and so we booked the Brekke Gard Hostel. We got several emails from Brekke Gard after the booking and this was re-assuring to us.
We had one night, arriving on the train from Myrdel and leaving the next afternoon on a ferry to Larvik.
As with a previous review, our room was in a shared house in Flam centre rather than in the 'Old Barn', but in our case it was was due to the main hostel being full rather than closed. We had brought our own bedding so we didn't need to hire any.
Raquel and Monica were very helpful and got us sorted quickly and efficiently. We shared the house with two other family groups, but there was no noise or clashes with the bathroom. We had one problem and it was dealt with swiftly when we contacted the gift shop.
Having a kitchen, lovely view and with being located in the centre saved us the walk and gave us a different perspective. We did get to look at the hostel and it is a quirky old building with Munch pictures as others have described, it seemed clean and welcoming and well located.
The Flam Co-op store was well stocked for food whether cold, to be cooked or for a picnic. A can and bottle recycling machine that returns deposits is located at the back of the coop.
There is a brewery pub/bar/restaurant that is popular with groups for tasting sessions. It is another quirky building, but this one is a modern showbar, but the atmosphere is still fun.
Beer and wine is never cheap in Norway, but you can buy bottles of the local brews in the off-sales shop in the pub, and in the coop. Unfortunately these bottles weren't accepted by the recycling machine.
Our weather was excellent and we enjoyed the buzz of cruise boat passengers while relaxing around the quay where there is plenty of seating. A walk up the valley past the hostel opens up views of waterfalls and high cliffs, it is quite spectacular.
