“Picture Perfect!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2011

Flam Vandrerhjem is a campsite and a hostel in Flåm. Flåm is a really small village in Norway and is the gateway to Fjords. Some of the Fjord cruises start from here.
The entire campsite is huge and offers grounds for camping (for those who wish to bring their own tents and caravans) a hostel (with single, double and 4 bed rooms) as well as log cabins.

We had booked a log cabin (for 4 ) in advance and its advised to do so, since its heavily booked. The cabin was beautiful. Very neat and clean, had 4 beds (bunks) with a pillow and quilt each. Along with that a dining table and a small kitchenette (with a stove, utensils, crockery and cutlery). Very comfortable for 4 people. You have to get your own bedsheets and pillow covers or get them for an extra cost (which in Norway is not cheap!). Better to carry your own.

There is a block with showers and toilets (you have to pay 10Nok for a shower!) and another block with a washing machine and area to wash utensils. They also expect you to clean your cabin yourself and leave it in the exact same condition as you got it. Brooms etc are provided.

There is a small shop which offers basic food (bread, jam, yogurt etc). Its a little expensive and its better to just carry your own food stuff from a local grocery shop. The owner is a little strict and expects you to follow all rules.

There is only 1 grocery shop around, and everything shuts by 8pm, so if you don't get anything to eat by then and don't want to spend a lot of money eating at the only hotel in Flam, you'll probably go hungry.

Overall, it was a great stay. Very beautifully located and very clean. Also, it offers a whole range of accommodation so its good for all kinds of travelers. Just make sure you get dinner by 8pm and you'll be good!

Room Tip: Book in advance

Pro: The small hostel building we stayed is totally new. The room is nice and clean with beautiful surrounding environment. There is a bright and spacious kitchen so that you can cook pleasantly. The best thing is its really a cheap hostel with such beautiful rooms. Comparing to the fjord cruise, the view from Flåm is not so surprising, so spending much more to stay in a hotel with a fjord is not of a great value. Flåm hostel is absolutely the best choice in this small village.

Con: No cons :)

For the price, you can't go wrong. The family that owns this Hostel is very nice too. They are 3 generations living together in the community, and provide an reasonably priced place to stay and enjoy the beauty of Flam and Norway. My wife and I stayed in a double with our own private shower for approx $135USD/night. I have never stayed in a hostel before and found the experience to be extremely positive. We enjoyed the large open kitchen where we met people from all over the world. The rooms were extremely clean and tidy. I suggest you bring your own sheets and towels and save a little $$ if you can, as they charged us an extra $20USD.

We hiked out to the waterfall and met up with the the wife of the owner. She was probably in her late 60's and hiked up the mountain with no problem! She also shared the story of her family and details about the history of the area and hostel. I have found most Norwegians to be a bit shy, so meeting this warm and friendly family was a lovely experience.

I highly recommend renting a bike in Flam. If you feel adventurous, take the train to the top (Myrdal) and rent a bike from the cafe and ride it down the mountain. It will be the most beautiful bike ride of your life and you can see a lot more than from the train. If you are in shape, rent a bike in Flam and bike up to the top! It's not as difficult as I thought, although the last 2km you have to push the bike or lock it to a tree. You will encounter a friendly patch of milking goats, as well as countless waterfalls, meadows and stunning scenery.

This is one of the cheapest and family run hotel in Flam. The staff are very polite, helpful and friendly. We reserved a double room, but got two separate beds in a three bedded room (I was expecting a double bed !). The common wash-rooms (on ground floor) are clean and well maintained. There is a kitchen in the first floor for self-catering.

I had a pleasant stay but I would choose 'Heimly Pensjonat' next time which offers a nice fjord view, attached wash-room and breakfast for the same price.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel - it was clean and comfortable. We stayed in one of the private double rooms in what looked like a brand new building. We rented sheets for our stay, but really didn't need to because there was a brand new fitted sheet and comforter on the bed. Flam is super tiny, so there's really no bad place to stay. Pick the cheapest option (Flam Hostel) for sure. If you can arrange it with boat and train times, don't plan to be in Flam for more than a few hours/overnight. There's absolutely nothing to do - and that includes eating out.

Flam Vandrerhjem is a camping, hotel, hytter, hostel at the same time.
We had an hytter and was very very clean. Quite confortable to be an Hytter and for the price i cannot really find anything bad. It was really quite and a step away from the fjord and the Flambahn. It was a perfect staying.
We could park the car right in front of the hytter everyday and start a bbq, really relaxing.
The shared bathrooms were also regularly cleaned.

This hostel is part of Flam camping. It is run by one company. The best thingabout this hostel is the location. It is right next to Flambana Railway and fjord tour to Gudvanger. So you can just walk to the ferry/rail terminal. We slept in new yellow building. The dorm and kitchen were absolutely perfect. Cleen, modern... This hostel offer free parking, but the WiFi is 10NOK/0,5hr.
