“Lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

Great location and wonderful views of the fjord. The hotel has a very welcoming lawn with chairs.
The lobby is cozy and comfortable with the fireplace. The rooms were great with good views. The WIFI in the room was not working the first day but was the second day.The breakfast buffet offered many choices and the brown goat cheese made locally was a real treat. The rooms on the back side face a sloping hill. This hotel is very convenient to the train, boats and shopping.

We stayed here for two nights in June. Great room--large and comfortable.Excellent bed. Wonderful food--buffet style with lots of choices.

We would stay here again should we return to Flåm.

Only problem was no WIFI in the room. We needed to go to a special spot in the lobby to get on the Internet and check our email.

We stayed here as part of a “Norway in a Nutshell” tour. This hotel would have been rated “excellent” instead of “very good” except for one flaw, which I will get out of the way here and now; the lighting in the washroom was absolutely horrible. The washroom is equipped with three luminaires above the sink however, two of them have been deliberately disabled. It is difficult to describe the lighting levels in non-technical terms, so I will try this instead: Imagine going into a pitch-black washroom now, imagine turning on your smart phone and holding it above your head. This is what our washroom was like. Most hotels are on energy saving kicks, but our washroom had so little light that the shower was essentially dark with the curtain pulled. Enough with the flaw, let’s move on to the rest of the hotel.

The hotel consists of the original building plus a newer modern wing where we stayed. The rooms are comfortable enough with the usual features. A couple of odd things with the room; (1) the temperature control could not be found (2) the rooms are accessed with an RFID type card. To unlock the door, you simply hold the card near the mechanism. However, as we discovered later, you also need to hold the card near the door to lock it when you leave! Unlike 99.9 % of the hotels I have stayed at, the door does not automatically lock. Last thing about the doors, they swing into the corridor so be careful when leaving your room, or you may knock out a fellow guest walking down the hall.

In terms of location, the hotel is central to the highway, Flam railway, and cruise ship terminal. It was relatively quiet there during our stay but the place must be quite busy when a large cruise ship comes into port.

We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel and were quite satisfied with the selection and service. There are also other dining options on the cruise ship wharf. All hotel staff were accommodating and friendly.

In terms of things to do, there is the Flam railway, railway museum, fjord cruises, and plenty of hikes. The hotel has maps that clearly outline the paths and roads for hikes, ranging from easy to challenging. I would also strongly recommend the hiking trail to Aurland along side the fjord. The views are simply stunning.

My daughter and I stayed here for 2 nights in Sept. It was such a beautiful hotel! From the moment we walked in we felt welcome, and at home. Our room was on the front with a balcony where we could enjoy the views. It was clean, comfortable and they provided extra blankets since we were cold. The dining room was host to some very large groups so was noisy but the dinner buffet was excellent and had a very good variety of foods. We were approached at our table by a very drunk guy which was kind of scary but the staff immediately got him away from us and apologized profusely. Take your time here and enjoy the opportunity to hike, rest, and take in the amazing views!!!

Room Tip: Ask for the new section with a balcony.

I stayed here for 2 nights. The staff members were friendly at reception. However, it took the wait staff ages to hand me a menu & take my lunch order. The hotel is conveniently located & has a nice exterior. However, my double room was below average for 4 star hotel. No toiletteries (seems to be the case in most Norwegian hotels unless it's a five star hotel) except a soap dispenser. The check in time is 4 pm, which is very late & not my money's worth. The rooms are in desperate need of a make over. It's such a beautiful location, if only they had a luxury 5 star hotel to complement it.

Wanted to stay here as it is a sort of icon in the tourist center of Norway. Great setting and ideal for walking around Flam. The reception was efficient and we soon had a nice room. Since we were touring in a campervan we needed the facilities after a spell on the road. Everything worked and we were comfortable.
We eat in the hotel and despite it being very busy found that the bar upstairs was closed. We were told we could get a drink in the cafe next to reception. Having only one receptionist we had to wait a long time.
The food was good, although the starter portions were small. The service was a bit rushed and then slow. No attention paid to how we eat the meal. At the end of the meal we asked for coffee and to have it served downstairs. Half an hour later we were still waiting and they appeared to have shut the dining area. We went to bed.
Breakfast was superb. There was not much that wasn't on the table. Quality of everything was extremely high and the service, clearing the many dishes was just right.
All the bits are there if only they looked at what people want from a nice meal.
This place is a crossroads of the world; you will meet every race except Norwegian. If you want to immerse yourself in Norwegian culture go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Go for a half board package. You get a much better rate than room plus meal.

Despite being by the station dont get the impression it will be noisy. I dont think Flam could ever be accused of noisy! The rooms are fine esp if you get one facing the front or the station and the breakfast was very nice. I wouldnt recommend eating there at night if money is being stretched in Norway as there are cheaper places to eat in the "town". I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel as it is a good stop in between Oslo and Bergen.
