“Great location but dated hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012 via mobile

I stayed here for 2 nights. The staff members were friendly at reception. However, it took the wait staff ages to hand me a menu & take my lunch order. The hotel is conveniently located & has a nice exterior. However, my double room was below average for 4 star hotel. No toiletteries (seems to be the case in most Norwegian hotels unless it's a five star hotel) except a soap dispenser. The check in time is 4 pm, which is very late & not my money's worth. The rooms are in desperate need of a make over. It's such a beautiful location, if only they had a luxury 5 star hotel to complement it.

“Flawed Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Wanted to stay here as it is a sort of icon in the tourist center of Norway. Great setting and ideal for walking around Flam. The reception was efficient and we soon had a nice room. Since we were touring in a campervan we needed the facilities after a spell on the road. Everything worked and we were comfortable.
We eat in the hotel and despite it being very busy found that the bar upstairs was closed. We were told we could get a drink in the cafe next to reception. Having only one receptionist we had to wait a long time.
The food was good, although the starter portions were small. The service was a bit rushed and then slow. No attention paid to how we eat the meal. At the end of the meal we asked for coffee and to have it served downstairs. Half an hour later we were still waiting and they appeared to have shut the dining area. We went to bed.
Breakfast was superb. There was not much that wasn't on the table. Quality of everything was extremely high and the service, clearing the many dishes was just right.
All the bits are there if only they looked at what people want from a nice meal.
This place is a crossroads of the world; you will meet every race except Norwegian. If you want to immerse yourself in Norwegian culture go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Go for a half board package. You get a much better rate than room plus meal.

“Lovely hotel by the train station and harbour.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Despite being by the station dont get the impression it will be noisy. I dont think Flam could ever be accused of noisy! The rooms are fine esp if you get one facing the front or the station and the breakfast was very nice. I wouldnt recommend eating there at night if money is being stretched in Norway as there are cheaper places to eat in the "town". I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel as it is a good stop in between Oslo and Bergen.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

We knew that this was supposed to be a special place and it was. Of course the setting by the fjord is woomderful but the building itself is a combination of the original structure and an addition. We were in the origiinal bulding which was very nice and a corner room didn't hurt. Neither did the fact that they give you free access to the allundry and even profive the detergent. Very freindly, helpful young staff. Bed very comfortable with the typical European comforters that we grew to love. Common areas very well done inviting. The front of the building bascially opens up during the day for passage to the very well flowered garden in front. Definitely the place to stay in Flam.

Room Tip: Go for a corner.

“A Small Suprise in a Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

Prior to coming to Flam we knew this hotel was long established and it is, but we were in a newly refurbished section which was very well presented. We had a balcony with a view of the comings and goings of the Flam railway and of the fjord. The hotel has a lovely restaurant which also has good fjord views, both dinner (has a buffet option) and breakfast (buffet) were great. There is also a very nice bar area and a cafe which serves quick but good meals.

Our room did not have free WiFi but this was avialble in the public areas. The only point to watch out for is that the doors to the rooms open out, not in - don't stand in the corridor when someone else opens the door! Make sure you visit the public rooms which have been set up with traditional Norweigan decor.
