“Just back from a two night break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

We were in a party of two couples and we went to stay at the Crown Inn on a Groupon type of arrangement. The place itself was ok, but beware of beds with evil sticking out legs, suggest take shin pads or cricket pads! Manager was unfriendly, unwelcoming and rude. The meal included on the first night was good, but the breakfast was poor - like other people have written only one small slice of toast served with the meal. No marmalade offered and the coffee pot was removed from our table before we could take a second small cup.

The other staff were quite nice, but our stay was ruined by the attitude of the Manager and we would definitely not return.

Booked this place with two other couples with Groupon vouchers 6th of June until the 8th of June. We arrived at 9:30pm. On lovely sunny day we were dreaming of much needed holiday but unfortunately that was't the case. The lady said "We don't serve at the bar after 11 pm but you might hang out till 2 am".
We were check-in in room. One of the first questions was whether we would like to cancel the booking and get refunded, not very welcoming. An hour after check-in we left the place to visit a friend in town.
Coming back to the The Crown at 1:15 am real story started. There was no person in the reception and they don't give you main door keys, the main door was closed after several tries of door bell and phone calls we succeeded to talk to the owner gentleman. He is not definitely the politest person in Lake District. We were really shocked by his attitude. He kept six of us outside the door and started to interrogation. I had two copies of my Groupon and we gave four copies to the lady at the check-in. Now this gentleman was not sure we are actually SIX!!! funny but true. Then he argued that we are late and he can't let us in. After long argument in the middle of the night we were allowed in. I tried to very gently talk to him the next morning but no luck. He asked us to check out and we undoubtedly accepted.
Our holiday were close to be converted to a complete disaster but thanks to lovely small B&B with a lovely owner it didn't. You might not be as lucky as us, so think again before booking.

You are looking to that hotel? I suggest that immediately you look aside. The worst hotel I ever been, Not hotel! Not B&B! I don't know What to call it, Firstly, the man at reception was so rude and seemed to not care about his job at all. not professional.. no body cares about you if you have a problem, instead he talked very loudly.. The rooms are so small without any place to hang on your clothes.

We have never replied to the very few negative reviews on Tripadvisor preferring to let the high proportion of good reviews speak for us, however we feel the comments made in this posting need a rebuttal.
The poster was one of a group who attempted to gain accommodation for 8 people on Groupon vouchers that entitled only 6. One of the vouchers was an obvious photocopy.
They attempted to gain entry to the building at 1.20am. They had obviously had a drink and were noisy and woke other guests up.
They said they believed we would have 24 hour reception. We are a 7 bedroomed Lakeland inn. Funny enough we have never had the need for a 24 hour reception.
The next morning they were again rude and aggressive and at this point they were told to leave.
Other guests having breakfast witnessed this and in fact the previous review mentions this.
Everyone visiting this establishment will be accorded every courtesy and respect but boorishness, bad manners and aggression will be met by a polite but firm response.
Crawford and Lesley and the staff at the Crown would like to refer anyone interested in visiting this award winning Lakeland Inn to the recent restaurant review by the Westmoreland gazette where we gained the highest score ever recorded by a Cumbrian restaurant and also our 2013 award winner for excellence by Tripadvisor.
Just a footnote, since the Crown at High Newton re-opened after a complete refurbishment 3 and a half years ago we have had approximately 10,000 guests stay with us....out of that we have had 72 reviews this equates to 99.28% of our guests never leave a comment on Tripadvisor and out of the 0.72% of guests who post reviews more than 50% of them are excellent.

Stayed from the 5th of June until the 7th of June in room 2.

On arrival we had to telephone to ask for someone to check us in because we couldn't find anyone, however once we did we find both Lesley and Crawford to be welcoming and pleasant .

The room and bathroom was one of the cleanest I have ever seen, plenty of fresh towels and nice touches such as hair and body shampoo and hand cream. Tea and coffee making equipment provided and nice clean cups !. Hanging space for clothes and plenty of draws.
The bed was a little too hard for us and the legs on the bed do stick out too much so you keep bumping yourself, however we were warned of this when taken to the room so we put cushions at the end to pad it out a bit. The room was tastefully furnished but not too cluttered like some places can be.

The rooms are up some steps , which although not steep might not be ideal for someone with very limited mobility. Could do with a reminder in the room with information such as what time breakfast is, evening meals and closing times etc.

The first morning a waitress asked if we wanted tea or coffee and served it, nice coffee not instant stuff, the second morning it was put on a separate table and we were told, after a while to help ourself, I think consistency would be better to avoid confusion.

There was a selection of cereals on a table for you to help yourself.

The full English breakfast was just the right amount and very pleasant , although I'm not too keen on having some items served on top of each others, such as bacon and egg on top of the beans, also a choice of brown or white toast would be good and some marmalade would be nice. Having said that the breakfast kept us going until lunchtime and the sausages were lovely.

We chose the groupon deal which was just bed and breakfast but we chose to eat at the Inn both evenings, first night we had the scampi and sirloin steak and the second night the gammon and steak and ale pie. All four meals were lovely and hot and served in a timely manner. The steak and the gammon were of excellent quality and nicely cooked. I'm not sure but I think there is already salt on the meals so don't add more without tasting it first.........you can tell I'm a Mum can't you? . The only thing I would suggest is that there needs to be a couple more non meat or fish dishes other than the nut roast and sauces need to be made available

The bar staff were lovely, especially Wendy who really is a asset to this inn and the locals were welcoming which isn't always the case when you stay in a small village.

Overall we had a lovely time and will be back again soon !!

We were impressed with the calmness and professional manner Crawford dealt with a rather obnoxious group of guests who awoke me at 1.30am trying to get into the inn ,this is a lakeside inn not an international hotel chain !, one of the party was a very hysterical woman who was abusive and screaming for some considerable time prior to our departure,in fact she nearly sent me flying when she stormed through the bar area at 9.30am !...very rude. They eventually left the Inn and proceeded to block both carriageways of the main road with their cars whilst continuing to argue amongst themselves, almost causing an accident.

All in all a good stay, lovely food, lovely clean rooms and great staff. Thank you.

Room Tip: Room 2 is ideal if you don't want to hear noise from the bar but the bed is a little hard...obvi...

Lovely little old hotel set back in the little village of high Newton. Room was nice, beds quite comfortable but there were a few things that I think could have just made it a littlebit better, for example there were no little toiletries -admit it, we all like taking those home so we can take them to the gym! But most of all we were very disappointed with breakfast, after having such a massive tasty meal the night before all we got for breakfast was one sausage, one egg, some beans and a slice of very pale, thin toast, not even one slice of bacon! No cereal hanging about, one pot of coffee on the side and that was it! But apart from that very nice and friendly staff.

visited the crown with my husband on a groupon offer - stayed in room 6 - there was nowhere to put your clotvhes no rail, no drawers and the bed was rock hard. the room was no where near the standard of a basic travel lodge room and if I had paid full price I would have beed very dissapointed. The groupon dinner offer wasn't impressive either.
Breakfast consisted of 1 small glass of orange, 1 small coffee, i slice of toast, beans, a fried egg and one very nasty tasting sausage - I was half expecting Basil Fawlty to come out of the kitchen.
I won't be visiting again!!!

Room Tip: room 6 over looking main road nowhere to put clothes rock hard bed
