“Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We stayed at De Vere Shirrell Heath on the 11th and 12th of August.
Excellent reception staff very helpful. Gym and Pool areas excellent and well looked after ,Main House although stunning from the outside was dark and dingy inside ,so much so that we declined to use the bar or the restaurant ,such a shame and a lost opportunity for the group to increase its revenue, all it needs is a coat of paint and furniture that matches the style of the building ,easy to buy from local auction houses at low cost as this type of furniture is not currently in vogue. We would certainly use this hotel again ,although house keeping needs a tweak as rooms could have sparkled a little more .It was very difficult to receive our booking confirmation and took several emails with few replies returned to us to do so .All in all a very good value venue and a very enjoyable experience and would certainly book again .

Room Tip: all seem well situated DID'NT take breakfast so can't review food

Dear Captaintimr

Thank you for your feedback on your stay here at New Place. I am sorry that you felt the Manor House was dark and dingy inside and you could not dine in either our bar and restaurant because of this. I am delighted to say that we have a program in place to paint all areas and some parts of the house have been completed. We have also invested in some new furniture for the restaurant and also we enquiring about new bar furniture. Sorry that you had problems with your booking confirmation number, I have passed this on to our central reservation team.
I am pleased to read that you would book again and that you had an enjoyable experience, we will look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Kind regards

The De Vere New Place Hotel

"New" Place it is not!

A hot "tired" room. Some great but mostly grumpy staff. Complaints are dealt with defensively and begrudgingly.

"Guests stay in delightful mews quarters." No they don't!
Guest rooms are unbearably hot without any air conditioning! We were allocated Room 85 above the Health Centre. A tunnel of a room with a tiny window - which was sweltering. Having complained we were given Room 91 which was better but not brilliant. I asked Reception why we were put in Room 85 (which the manageress was aware was exceptionally hot) when Room 91 was available. She didn't know!

A welcome bottle of wine in the room, when we arrived was a nice touch.

The hammock style mattress was very uncomfortable, and wearying after a whole week at the hotel.

The bathroom was grubby. As photographed, there was mould on the bottom of the shower screen. Mould on the seal around the bath. A cracked floor tile. Muck at the bottom of the door frame, on both sides. Recycled budget toilet paper! The bedroom carpet could have done with a good vacuum / steam clean.

Housekeeping was sloppy! We had sachets of proper coffee for the first two days but only decaf after that! We were alarmed to come back from a day out on Tuesday to find an extra bed had been put in our room. We were slightly nervous we may get unwelcome guests during the night. When we asked Reception to remove the extra bed, as we could hardly move with it in our room, we got no apology for the mix up / inconvenience. I asked the lady who came to collect the bed how this could have happened. I got a surly, "It was on the sheet!" response. Still no apology.

Coffee available all day in the coffee room was welcome.

A nice help yourself breakfast with plenty of choice. The chefs cooking eggs, when we had breakfast, were friendly and chatty.

Unless you are relegated to the "Garden Room" as we were on Day 1. Another little hot box without any open windows and tables crammed so closely together that every time a neighbouring diner wanted to get up, the 3 diners around him or her had to stand up and breathe in to let them out, and repeat the process when they came back.

Great friendly bar staff who went out of their way to be helpful.

Waitresses bringing meals through to the bar were variable, mostly very sullen and uncommunicative. Our polite request for ketchup, on Thursday evening, was met with a particularly icy glare from the waitress with a short dark bob, who didn't speak, but glared menacingly.

We reported a frayed, loose electricity cable, lying on the ground, next to the path to our room. As photographed. Even if it wasn't live it was definitely a trip hazard!
We got a defensive response from the Receptionist who said repeatedly, "We are checked every year!"
I would have expected a response like, "Thank you for pointing that out, we'll deal with it immediately!"
That evening a little yellow sign was put over the cable and the cable was buried the next day.

Nice pool. Good (free) wifi access.

We won 't be recommending this hotel and won't be back ourselves.

We stayed in New Place following a trip to Paultons Park and were very pleased. It was a little difficult to book as the main reservations centre weren't able to give the offers we had had seen on the web, but they put us through to the hotel and they offered as a good rate with no trouble.
We were welcomed at Reception and our rooms were as described. Nice and clean with towels provided for the leisure pool. Pool was very good and children welcome with floats provided.
It's a 20 minute drive from Peppa Pig World but we thought it was worth it for the standard of accommodation, lovely grounds, hearty breakfast and helpful staff. Even provided gluten free muffins on request. Well done! Would definitely recommend for a short stay.

Room Tip: Some rooms may suffer a little noise if there is an event on - Ask for a quiet room when booking...

Stayed here for one night. Very good location and lovely grounds.

Rooms are like bungalows, my room wasn't very clean, very dusty.

Restaurant food was too posh and over priced. I had pub food in the bar, had to sit in the corridor as only a few tables. Food was good but small portions and over priced.

Breakfast here was the best I've ever had, quality food and good choice.

Pool was clean and nice

Dear guest

Thank you for your latest review. Can I apologise that you felt our room was not clean and very dusty; I have past your comments on to my Head housekeeper to discuss with his team. We feel our restaurant menu at £28 for 3 courses is good value for the quality of food, I am sorry you thought it was not, but thank you for your feedback.

It is great to read that our breakfast was the best ever and the pool are clean and nice.

We hope to see you at New Place again very soon.

Kind regards

We got married at New Place in March 2013, we could not have asked for better service, hospitality or venue.

As we had family and friends staying the night before they hotel were put on very reasonable priced buffet dinner with a private room, which really started the weekend off well, all those staying at the hotel commented on how kind and courteous the staff were.

The day itself could not have been better organised, from the room being set up in the morning to the welcome drinks on our arrival from the church, the catering and service at the wedding breakfast and bar staff in the evening. We were particularly impressed with the Wedding planner Fern and the ladies co-ordinating on the day. We really felt as if we were the only Wedding they had, they made us feel very special and well looked after.

We couldn’t recommend New Place highly enough and look forward to spending our first Anniversary there next year.

We stayed for just one night, breaking our journey from holiday to home. Having driven 400 plus miles through France and a ferry journey all we wanted was a comfortable bed. Our room, although a little dark in decor, was not massive but had everything we needed, the bathroom was lovely. Breakfast the following morning was wonderful. We were lucky to be given a table on the terrace overlooking the gardens, the sun was shining and the food choice was amazing, served from the buffet, there was everything you could wish for and as much as you wanted. (you would be advised to book breakfast either when booking the hotel or on arrival. £7.50 if pre booked, £10.50 if not) We could not find fault with any of the staff, we found them all to be very pleasant, friendly and helpful. We will stay again.
