“Disappointing not a 5 Star Hilton”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012 via mobile

We returned for a fortnights holiday one we were so looking forward to. The room was small with poor air conditioning so we upgraded to a much nicer room at a cost.

The hotel we were told was full when we arrived one of the restaurants was shut, the pool bar closed after 4 days, sun beds were removed from the grassed area. Shuttles to the marina reduced and now charged for sun beds on the beach. The weather was beautiful so we tolerated all of the above. A corporate function led to customers being advised that half of the main pool area would be closed from 14.00 hours in fact it was from 10.00am upon complaining we were advised this is the transitional time for the hotel.

Unacceptable and very disappointed for a Hilton the morale to this story Sept although told the hotel is full clearly service suffers try the Crown Plaza or 4 Seasons we will be in future. Hilton Honours customers.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

I have just returned from a 2 week stay at As Cascatas with my husband, son, his wife, and their children aged 7 Years and 15 months. We stayed in a 2 bed apartment which was very nice and reasonably equipped. Servicing the apartment was difficult for the staff because of the youngests sleep routine. However, on several occasions when the apartment had been serviced insufficient towels were left - not a good discovery when you have already got into the shower! Although the kitchen was well equipped with white goods, there were no tea towels to dry the toddlers bottles, cups and dishes that could not be put into the dishwasher. Initially, kitchen towels were supplied but that stopped half way through our stay. Other small niggles were that under the beds were filthy - only discovered this when looking for an earring. The bin in the shower room was broken and clattered every time you used it! Although there is a washing machine in the kitchen there is nowhere to hang clothes to dry (who wants to use the dryer in that sunshine - and what a waste of electricity!) and instructions state that you must not hang clothes on the balcony.

On 4 consecutive days the adult swimming pool had to be closed because someone had done a poo in it!

I found the staff on reception less than helpful, in fact on occasions bordering on rude.

On the positive the grounds were beautifully kept and a credit to the establishment. The pool area was also well kept. Paradise Island was rather expensive unless you stayed with your child. My granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed herself there, especially the zip wire!

Although the food was excellent it was a bit pricey.

The write-up states that there is a shuttle bus but this does get very busy and the queues quite lengthy. The pool bar closes at 5.30 which I felt was a little early. They had also run out of ice-cream and weren't planning on restocking as they were coming to the end of the season - a big disappointment for the children!

Nice - but I prefer the Four Seasons!

We have just visited As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa for a stay of 10 days. This is first time I visit Algarve, so all was new as experience and impressions. The hotel complex is nice, but the description of images we had seen in our research do not present the full picture of what you should expect. Vilamoura is 20 min walk away. The area although advertised as suitable for stralls, is pretty unfriendly to walks. You need to watch out for 50km speeding cars, and bikes that are sharing the pedestrian area. All houses and complexes are enclosed with fences, so you end up walking through endless labyrinth.

As a start the apartments are in the same compound with Hilton, but they are a separate estate with a self-service I think in a positive way. What I was expecting to see is private flats, but the people bathing at the swimming pools were non-stop passing by our flat walking over the grass lawns, not a nice experience. Also none of the swimming pools are suitable for swimming, soaking is the main activity. However, if you come with kids, they would love them. I prefer more active holiday, so I was disappointed to see that the only activity around is the gym and maybe playing some golf. The gym is very basic and half of the equipment was out of service.

The complex is pretty secluded, so for a better experience I would advise renting a car. I needed to keep in touch with work, so the lack of internet wi-fi was an issue, and I had to buy myself a longer than 3m ethernet cable provided by the reception for 5EUR per day. Still the speed was an issue, and was not a great experience to wait for a buffering.

I think for me the biggest problem was the food options, as the restaurants in Hilton were not good enough and if you want to follow a healthy regime you need to stock up from some big supermarket, which is not in Vilamoura. It is still puzzling for me, why the complex is not offering catering service to its guests from a big supermarket, so their guests don't waste time on shopping for food. The food options at Vilamoura are around the Marina, but again the healthy options are very limited.

One positive I would like to factor is the amazing staff - always helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Definitely opt in for double room, as they are more spacious.

We are from London and we travelled to As Cascatas with my boy and girl of 2 and 4 years old.

We had a 2 bedroom apartment which in short, was nothing short of excellent. The same apartment anywhere else on the Med would cost an absolute fortune. With all the trappings of the Hilton hotel everthing was there from a top spa, gym, pools etc. The people on reception were great and were always there to help and assist you.

The apartment has amazing facilities and a great bed too (not too hard, not too soft). The TV/DVD player is superb and the kitchen has everything and then some. Bathrooms were great too.

My main critisicism is the pool. It is great that this place is child friendly but when you have 15 teenagers totally taking over the pool and playing handball making excessive noise and splashing water on sunbathers, hitting them with the ball and not allowing absolutely anyone else to swim in the pool something must be said. It's ridiculous. The other criticism I have is that the very small childrens pool should be heated.

Internet in the room was good and was able to work with my laptop using hotels wired connection with no issues.

Overall an excellent experience, especially if you have children. We will return. Vilamoura is a sweet town/marina and there wasn't any chav type folk around. All very decent.

Just back from 10 days at the As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa, we rented a 2 bed apartment and they lived up to the reviews on Tripadviser. The apartments were clean, well equipped with a TV in every room including kitchen. I would say best holiday apartments I have ever stayed in, the resort was quite no issues in getting sun loungers by pool etc. All in all a very relaxing enjoyable holiday. There is always a but, the Hilton Hotel which you have access too is not up to the usually Hilton standard when it comes to food or staff. We had lunch one day and could not eat it as it looked like it was leftovers from day before. They actually charged me for it and when I complained the staff were down right rude and unhelpful. So my tip is to avoid the Hilton for food.

Room Tip: Avoid the Hilton for food

We stayed in a 2 bed apartment in As Cascatas and were generally impressed with the experience, from booking to checkout.

As Cascatas is managed separately from the on-site Hilton franchise but shares the same facilities and these are pretty good by any standards. The front desk at As Cascatas is much more personal than the busy Hilton reception however and they went out of their way to assist us with any request (usually taxi-related, but also an extended stay and late checkout). Also at 80m2 our apartment was huge, with a fantastically equipped modern kitchen (including full size oven, hob, microwave, big fridge, dishwasher and washing machine), 2 good bathrooms, 2 double bedrooms and separate living area. Flat screen TVs with English channels were everywhere except the bathrooms. I don't know why you would choose a Hilton room frankly, as early booking in As Cascatas means you get a massive apartment versus a small suite equivalent. As mentioned, facilities are shared, including restaurants; the poolside grill is good value and doubles as an a la carte in the evening, the neighbouring buffet venue is a tad expensive for what you get as far as dinner is concerned (rather tame themed nights) but excellent for breakfast. For a discounted €12 per adult (small kids free) the reknowned Hilton breakfast buffet is a bargain. The site also houses a rather formal hotel bar, 2 large outdoor pools, 1 "tranquil" pool for adults, 1 heated indoor kids pool, 24 hour gym and the spa. The pools were often a bit mobbed with kids, especially late afternoon (once they had warmed up!) but this made the atmosphere lively. The Owners' Bar in the As Cascatas area was open from 10am, closing 5ish which was a shame as others have written. The Kids' Club, Paradise Island, is big and offers a variety of climbing frames and activities. The zip-wires were our favourite. There was no charge for the facility if parents accompany their kids.

There are a few more noteworthy negatives. The location means you need transport to town or anywhere else for that matter. Walking would take 35-40 minutes to the marina. Taxis are cheap but unreliable when called out. Getting back from the marina is no issue assuming taxis are on stand but expect a wait if you're in the Old Village calling a pick-up. Not much the hotel or As Cascatas staff can do about that to be fair. Closer to home however, there was a bizarre morning ritual of queue-forming for the main pools to open, to get towels and, yes, to reserve sun-loungers. Staff did not enforce a no-reserve policy, nor a 30 minute turnaround rule for vacant (but seemingly reserved) loungers, leading to an often heated bunfight at 9am when the areas were formally opened. Scenes during our stay were sometimes worthy of a youtube posting. And before you ask, this is a very Brit/Irish dominated resort; we appear to have learned a lot from our friends on the continent. The pool areas are Hilton managed and the As Cascatas guests have to collect towels (albeit different colours) and grab a spot in the same way as anyone else. There were only just enough loungers versus guests during our stay and the place wasn't full, no doubt fueling the morning rush hour. Our only other gripe was the schlepp to the nearest supermarket. The hotel shop is of limited use and if you want to stock the fridge with water, wine, beer and food essentials then it's a 15 minute walk there and back. Not insurmountable but tougher when it's 30c in the shade. You should note there is no "welcome pack" of water, milk etc so you'll need to visit the shop at some stage.

The positives way outweigh the negatives for this place though. Recently we've been to Martinhal near Sagres and Monte da Quinta up the coast, both 5 star resorts, and this is a much better all-round experience. It helps that the town has a handful of very good restaurants of course (try Akvavit for lunch, O Marisco for dinner, both on the main marina). The personal touch afforded by the As Cascatas team is a stand-out. With a 5 year-old (and no car) we were a demanding bunch and they coped admirably. Given this and the facilities generally, top marks.

We have recently returned from a weeks stay in a 1 bedroom apartment. We were really impressed with the standard of the apartment and how child friendly the surroundings were. We have a 2 year old son who requires constant entertainment, the swimming pool, paradise island and other children made this a perfect choice. Although paradise island is mainly aimed at older children it was still enjoyable for him to explore and make some friends. We had lunch the first day at the swimming pool bar which was a little on the expensive side but we enjoyed it. We didn't use the spa unfortunately as our son kept us busy but it looked great and well worth the 15 euros entrance fee. The gym is great but avoid going between 8am and 9am as everyone seemed to go at that time so you couldn't get a machine. I personally felt having a car was essential as its best to stock up at the bigger supermarket a little further away. Also we went to some great restaurants a short drive away at the fish market in the port. There's also a great restaurant called Marufa which is great food at excellent prices. Ask the guy on reception as he was so helpful. Overall I would stay here again as the standard is very high and we were able to keep our son entertained for a good part of the day which is always a priority these days!
