“Personal touch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

We stayed in a 2 bed apartment in As Cascatas and were generally impressed with the experience, from booking to checkout.

As Cascatas is managed separately from the on-site Hilton franchise but shares the same facilities and these are pretty good by any standards. The front desk at As Cascatas is much more personal than the busy Hilton reception however and they went out of their way to assist us with any request (usually taxi-related, but also an extended stay and late checkout). Also at 80m2 our apartment was huge, with a fantastically equipped modern kitchen (including full size oven, hob, microwave, big fridge, dishwasher and washing machine), 2 good bathrooms, 2 double bedrooms and separate living area. Flat screen TVs with English channels were everywhere except the bathrooms. I don't know why you would choose a Hilton room frankly, as early booking in As Cascatas means you get a massive apartment versus a small suite equivalent. As mentioned, facilities are shared, including restaurants; the poolside grill is good value and doubles as an a la carte in the evening, the neighbouring buffet venue is a tad expensive for what you get as far as dinner is concerned (rather tame themed nights) but excellent for breakfast. For a discounted €12 per adult (small kids free) the reknowned Hilton breakfast buffet is a bargain. The site also houses a rather formal hotel bar, 2 large outdoor pools, 1 "tranquil" pool for adults, 1 heated indoor kids pool, 24 hour gym and the spa. The pools were often a bit mobbed with kids, especially late afternoon (once they had warmed up!) but this made the atmosphere lively. The Owners' Bar in the As Cascatas area was open from 10am, closing 5ish which was a shame as others have written. The Kids' Club, Paradise Island, is big and offers a variety of climbing frames and activities. The zip-wires were our favourite. There was no charge for the facility if parents accompany their kids.

There are a few more noteworthy negatives. The location means you need transport to town or anywhere else for that matter. Walking would take 35-40 minutes to the marina. Taxis are cheap but unreliable when called out. Getting back from the marina is no issue assuming taxis are on stand but expect a wait if you're in the Old Village calling a pick-up. Not much the hotel or As Cascatas staff can do about that to be fair. Closer to home however, there was a bizarre morning ritual of queue-forming for the main pools to open, to get towels and, yes, to reserve sun-loungers. Staff did not enforce a no-reserve policy, nor a 30 minute turnaround rule for vacant (but seemingly reserved) loungers, leading to an often heated bunfight at 9am when the areas were formally opened. Scenes during our stay were sometimes worthy of a youtube posting. And before you ask, this is a very Brit/Irish dominated resort; we appear to have learned a lot from our friends on the continent. The pool areas are Hilton managed and the As Cascatas guests have to collect towels (albeit different colours) and grab a spot in the same way as anyone else. There were only just enough loungers versus guests during our stay and the place wasn't full, no doubt fueling the morning rush hour. Our only other gripe was the schlepp to the nearest supermarket. The hotel shop is of limited use and if you want to stock the fridge with water, wine, beer and food essentials then it's a 15 minute walk there and back. Not insurmountable but tougher when it's 30c in the shade. You should note there is no "welcome pack" of water, milk etc so you'll need to visit the shop at some stage.

The positives way outweigh the negatives for this place though. Recently we've been to Martinhal near Sagres and Monte da Quinta up the coast, both 5 star resorts, and this is a much better all-round experience. It helps that the town has a handful of very good restaurants of course (try Akvavit for lunch, O Marisco for dinner, both on the main marina). The personal touch afforded by the As Cascatas team is a stand-out. With a 5 year-old (and no car) we were a demanding bunch and they coped admirably. Given this and the facilities generally, top marks.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2012

We have recently returned from a weeks stay in a 1 bedroom apartment. We were really impressed with the standard of the apartment and how child friendly the surroundings were. We have a 2 year old son who requires constant entertainment, the swimming pool, paradise island and other children made this a perfect choice. Although paradise island is mainly aimed at older children it was still enjoyable for him to explore and make some friends. We had lunch the first day at the swimming pool bar which was a little on the expensive side but we enjoyed it. We didn't use the spa unfortunately as our son kept us busy but it looked great and well worth the 15 euros entrance fee. The gym is great but avoid going between 8am and 9am as everyone seemed to go at that time so you couldn't get a machine. I personally felt having a car was essential as its best to stock up at the bigger supermarket a little further away. Also we went to some great restaurants a short drive away at the fish market in the port. There's also a great restaurant called Marufa which is great food at excellent prices. Ask the guy on reception as he was so helpful. Overall I would stay here again as the standard is very high and we were able to keep our son entertained for a good part of the day which is always a priority these days!

Spent 7 nights in 1 bed apt with 2 adults and 2 kids. Can honestly say they can't do enough for you and everyone so friendly. Staff in Paradise Island are amazing and the facilities are brilliant. Mocada restaurant in main hotel offers possible best selection and certainly quality of food in Algarve, wihout charging fortunes !! Rui the waiter was top class every night, especially with the kids.

Without doubt best all round, certainly going back in August.

Cannot fault a thing about the whole place.

Fabulous !!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

Just spent 5 nights in a 1-bed apartment, overlooking the pool, 3rd floor. Very impressed with these apartments. Spacious, Luxurious furniture and fittings with every convenience . TV in bedroom and living room and a little one in the kitchen, Kitchen had everything needed to produce and serve a nice meal if you fancy that. It was well- cleaned every day. I had asked for a twin bedded room, instead we got a king bed in the bedroom and the sofa-bed was made up in the living room. While a bit dubious about a sofa-bed, I actually found it very comfortable and slept well each night in it. We were in off-season so not many people around, which was great. No issues with sun-beds. The big outdoor pool is not heated which was a disadvantage, some hardy swimmers did get in for a swim, but it would definitely be too cold for children in May. We ate breakfast at the hotel every day, for 15 euro each it was very good. great selection. We also tried out the spa for 20 Euro on a wet afternoon, and enjoyed the hydro pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and pool-side beds /cabana style. All very relaxing . Buffet dinner at the Hilton for 29 Euro was a let-down, mostly cold salad-style starters/appetisers, an ok veg soup, main courses were unappetising ,and lacked any real effort in the cooking, choice of sardines (v bony), chicken pieces, pork slices cooked on request on a grill, pasta with grilled veg and tomato sauce, rice, potatoes cooked with onions and chorizo, Pretty plain fare. Not very hot either. Most dishes were pretty depleted at 8.30 when we got there, and not replenished quickly. I wouldnt do the buffet dinner option again. instead take the free shuttle into Vilamoura and take your pick from the many options there. We stocked our fridge on day 1 at the local supermarket in Vilamoura and had our own supply of snacks, cold drinks, cocktails, etc to enjoy on our patio which was lovely. We found the receptionists very friendly and helpful, especially the two male receptionists. So all good with the apartments, and cheaper and more spacious than the basic hotel rooms, and the hotel is there with all its facilities if you want to use them

Room Tip: Get a Pool-facing apartment for the sun on the patios, but beware the noise from pool area if in hi...

Went to As Cascatas resort end of Oct for 4 nights and booked the 1 bedroom appartment for a family of 2 adults and 1 small child.

The area around the resort is surrounded with other apartments and (nice) villa's in a quiet residential area. Vilamoura city center and harbour is a couple of minutes drive from the resort. For this location you really need a rental car.

Parking area available just outside of main entrance. Reception was really helpful, originally we were given a downstairs apartment with access to the communal area which I did not prefer as our little daughter could wander away. That night they had no availability, but the next day we were able to move to a 4th floor apartment with balconies (3!) and a lovely view of the pool area and gardens.

Apartments are very high end. Very large enclosed kitchen area with access to one of three balconies. Kitchen appliances are top brand (Siemens) with tv and breakfast bar. Spacious living room with seating area in balcony. Bedroom has additional tv with access to 3rd balcony with lounge beds. Bathroom again high end quality.

As complex is attached to Hilton resort, we could use the same facilities as Hilton guests. As Cascatas had its own pool area, however the semi-covered heated children's pool was located on the Hilton side which is a minute walk away from the resort.

This stay made our trip feel like a home away from home and ideal for small and large families alike.

We stayed in the apartments for a week in September and had a very mixed experience.

First Positives:
The apartments are very large and spacious everything is brand new and you couldn't ask for anymore.
Breakfast at the Hilton is lovely and staff where very good there.
The sunbeds are perfect and plenty of.umbrellas available. It's nice that they are not two or three deep.

Negatives:
When we arrived at 1pm we where told our apartment wasn't clean.and check in.isn't until 5pm. The receptionist was less than friendly and told us to go eat lunch. I asked approx how long she said hour. We went down to the restaurant and ate a lovely lunch and loitered around for as long as possible with a grumpy 16 month old and went back to reception at 2.30 assuming it would be cleaned by then. Receptionist was down right rude this time telling us to go away still not ready. We pointed out she said it would be an.hour yet it had been longer did she have any time scale as our daughter needed changing and her nap. She rang the cleaner and asked if.she would do our room next. Then was told 40 min strange as she had told is they had been cleaning it before we went to lunch. Finally after sitting in reception we got into our room at just after 3 basically ruining our first day.

The pool itself is a fantastic set up but is ice cold. It's not as much of a problem in the adult pool but the child's pool really could do with heating.

The corridors and gardens are pretty sparse and do not feel at all luxurious. The underground car park is very dark and feels quite unsafe I wouldn't have wanted to have been down there on ky own. Felt like you where walking through the service entrance.

The pool bar doesn't open until just after 12 and is not really manned you find yourself waiting at least 5 to 10 minutes before a member of staff comes to serve you. It also has a very limited stock.

As we have a young child we often put the do not disturb sign on and cleaned the apartment ourselves. Reception called and actually got shirty about this and.demanded to know why very strange. There was a large bugs nest outside our door one night which snuck under our door when we called the cleaners and mentioned they said they would clear them. Not only where they still there when we got back to our room the cleaners had also left our bedroom patio door open.

Overall lovely apartments but not 5 star and not worth the money especially when compared with Royal Garden Villas in Tenerife.
