“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

I really don't feel this is a 5 star hotel in its true sense. While the rooms were very clean, I felt they were a bit dated.

The breakfast buffet was fantastic. Poolside menu was standard enough but there wasn't a great variety.

I was disappointed with a large bottle of water costing 4.70 and a can of Pepsi costing 3.50. With no on site shop or even one near by, you really have no choice.

Allowing guests to 'hold' sunbeds with towels from early morning was also very frustrating.

Overall, a nice hotel with good facilities but for the money, I felt let down.

We just got back from the hotel/resort and can say that it was just perfect! We stayed for seven nights in a premium room which are in the hotel and really convenient for families....with one child who can easily fit in the room with parents....although garden suites look nice some were a little walk from the restaurant. The rooms 305, 306, 307,308 and 405 etc have lovely views from balconies over the lake and the golf course. Balconies have a nice table and chairs and two lovely sun loungers. Everything was really clean and well kept.
Pool was wonderful and very refreshing and children LOVED the waterfalls and shallow children's pool - good for all little folks.
Kids Club was fab too - with a full programme and lovely ladies - lots of cuddles and fun times! My daughter kept wanting to go back day after day...all free and just turn up and stay. Pool games at 5.00 - 6.00 each night were a real hit with all children.
Food is as the reviews say excellent - we emailed hotel to organise half board which wasn't an option with the travel agent - which the hotel did directly for €25 per person per night for a minimum of three nights but my daughter was free for food so it was a good option - large choice and lovely surroundings - staff at restaurant really attentive from morning to night. I'm very picky and I couldn't find fault with restaurant food or service. The golf club also offers options for dinner with a wonderful patio and great views of the golf course - you don't need to book for this but can just turn up and can include it in HB if you decide to go that way.
We enjoyed taking the hotel transport to the beach at 10.00 and then back on the 14.00 transport to the hotel - they drop off and pick up at both the beach and marina to suit what you are planning to do the beach is wonderful though - golden sand and really well organised. You need to book free transport via the reception desk in the morning.
Hotel entertainment just right for young family - singers, flamenco dancers etc. but couples would probably go out to marina as it is quite low key - perfect for us. Taxis from marina to hotel are around €9 earlyish evening and you just join the queue for taxis on the inland side of the casino at the taxi rank - don't give up hope though as taxis do come past.....
It really was a combination of all our best holidays - with the shuttle bus journey to the beach and marina offering a bit of variety from the ordinary beach resort holiday. Will like so many people we met be back again next year and would recommend it to any family!

Room Tip: I wouldn't have wanted to be in the garden suites as some were quite a little walk - and could b...

We stayed here early June this year (3rd - 13th) as a treat for my 40th birthday and had a brilliant time. 4 of us in all - me, my husband and our 2 children (aged 2 and 8) and we stayed half board in the Garden suites. From the staff, to the pools, to the food - everything was great. Staying half board seemed to be a good deal too, as even though you choose from a restricted version of the a la carte menu, the restaurant staff were so accommodating that there was still an element of choice and the children could ask for whatever they wanted (within reason of course!). All meals were beautifully cooked and the choice at breakfast was very wide too. (Re earlier comments about the 'run down' restaurant furniture, well, they must have had a refurb as all looked brand new to me.) Only slight negative is that the drinks at the bar are pricey, but they had some reasonably priced (16-18 euros a bottle/3 euros a glass) good quality wine, so it didn't bother us!! We had a couple of days when the weather wasn't that great, but the indoor pool was good and we had it all to ourselves most of the time. Vilamoura marina is about 6km so bear this in mind - hiring a car for a couple of days would be good to travel around. Highly recommend it! (Nb we got a good deal too via alpharooms.)

This was our second stay at the Pestana, having previously holidayed here in 2009. We didn't enjoy it quite as much, and there don't appear to have been any improvements since Prestigia took it over from the previous hotel chain.

Overall, the staff were very helpful. The trainee who checked us in was very good and also helpful when it came to sorting out places on the minibus which runs to the marina. This has been scaled back since we were last here, and we would have preferred a later departure in the evening and a return trip (the last one back is at 5:15pm).

Last time we stayed in one of the 1800 garden rooms, which although close to the pool, was quiet and had a nice view. This time we had a 1200 room which had a smaller terrace and had the lake at the back of it. We weren't convinced about this and asked to move to one of the 1800 rooms but changed our mind when they said there would be a 25 euros per night supplement! To be fair, they offered us another of the 1200 rooms with a garden view for no extra cost but we eventually decided to stay put. The frogs croaking could be quite noisy and woke us up a couple of times but didn't bother us. The room decor is now looking dated but the quality of the furnishings is ok and the bathroom was huge with two sinks. The blackout curtains kept the morning sunshine at bay.

Last time we stayed we quickly concluded the evening buffet wasn't worth the money (around 25 euros per person). This time, we ate at the Golf Clubhouse and had two courses and a bottle of wine for roughly the same price, with table service. The menu was a bit limited and it was a bit "chips with everything" but the salads were quite good. We did try Oscar's (at the entrance to the resort) for lunch one day but it didn't really live up to its billing as a gastropub. We also went into Vilamoura and over to Vale De Lobo one evening to eat.

Breakfast was fine - good quality and plenty of choice, although watch out for the ducks and birds going for your food, as some people insist on feeding them (despite the signs telling them not to).

The cost of drinks in the Prime Bar is pretty reasonable by hotel standards. A pint and a glass of wine was roughly six euros, so more or less equivalent to UK prices. We did find the standard of service a bit patchy though. The bar manager was excellent and even memorised our orders after the first night, but on his days off the other staff treated customers as a bit of an inconvenience. One thing that wasn't reasonable was the cost of a game of pool - six euros for half an hour! We didn't partake, but parents desperate to occupy their teenage children did.

We both had an hour long massage, which was good value at 60 euros. The only thing that let it down was the location. It's now in the main hotel, rather than the spa down the road, which means the relaxing massage was interrupted by the sound of children running up and down the corrider outside.

The site is now starting to look a bit tired. Aside from the room decor, the direction signs are weathered and the room numbers are peeling. There are also loose and uneven paving tiles all over the place and I nearly went flying a few times. Having said that, the pool area is kept clean and is pleasant enough, the gardens are well kept and the interior of the hotel itself is nice. The 'business centre' is a joke - two internet PCs with cathode ray tube style monitors, one of which didn't appear to be working. There was free internet access, which was good and I guess there's not that much demand for the PCs in this age of tablets and ipads.

And although this is a golf resort, we noticed an increase in the number of families with children compared to last time. Worth bearing in mind if you don't like having a load of screaming rug rats running around.

Overall, although this definitely isn't a five star establishment, we were happy with what we got for a week's bed and breakfast in high season (it cost us about £800). But we've been twice now, so next time we head to Vilamoura we'll try somewhere different.

Room Tip: 1800s and 1900s are best

Got a good deal on hotwire when booking this hotel, so although we knew we were paying for a 5 Star the hotel is not named until after you make a payment. If I would of booked direct with the hotel or a travel agent I would not of been happy based on price comparison. The hotel itself needs updating, the rooms are not cleaned properly, when we checked in we were given an upgrade to a garden villa, there was damp on the walls and a pile of dead ants in the corner of the room that remained there throughout our stay!!!! There was no waiter service round the pool and the swim up pool bar was never opened during our stay. The location is only good for golfers.

We stayed at the Pestana Vila Sol three weeks ago, but we were disappointed, a large hotel, and the feel was very sparse, no flowers, and a bit cold. the rooms were average, the balcony you could see the others guests on each side of you. the food was not good at all, we even had room service and that was really poor. My daughter could not believe that the gym had no air conditioning, so it was impossible to use, as the temperature was so high.
I have stayed at Pestana hotels before, and I was very disappointed with this one.
Good points the staff were nice, and it had its own golf course, the club house was nice to eat in the food was good there, I wish we had went there at the beginning of the holiday.
We were not near to any others places to go to, others than a taxi drive.
Over all it was not what we expected, and would not stay there again.
