I recently spent six days at the Atlantis Hotel in Vilamoura and despite reading quite a few adverse reports I was very pleasantly surprised. The hotel is clean and wonderfully situated right on the beach. It is only a five minute walk to the local bus stop and a few more minutes to the lovely area of the mariner. I stayed on the eighth floor and the views were wonderful, room was huge with two double beds! Room was cleaned and beds changed each day. Had my own balcony with table and a couple of plastic chairs.
The hotel is quite quiet, so probably more suited to couples and 40+ folks.

If you fancy a gamble the Casino is right next door, you don’t have to gamble though, just go for the floorshow and four course dinner which was 27 euros.

One word of warning. I booked an excursion on line from Vilamoura to Gibraltar using a company called resortexcursions.com which cost me £32.19. They ask you to telephone a local number when you get there to confirm with the local agent. This I did and guess what? The agents informed me that they no longer dealt with this company and they didn’t have their phone number….so alas, no trip to Gibraltar. I am still trying to get my money refunded!
If you want to go on excursions I suggest you book through the hotel reception or the little kiosk which is in the Mariner. I had a look in there and a trip to Gibraltar was only 32 Euros!

Agree with other comments on this hotel re need for updateing. Our bathroom had cracked basin and battered bath and ancient shower altho it worked fine and plenty of hot water.

We had bed and breakfast and were pleased with the quality, quantity and service of breakfast. Staff very efficent and friendly there.

Reception staff were another thing. Too busy doing their own job to be bothered with visitors and generally 'superior' and unfriendly.

Location was great, some complained of noise from the casino across the way but we weren't troubled by noise. A short walk to a sandy beach with a small beach bar and about 15 minutes from the marina. Good restaurants around- we enjoyed Romanos nearby. Inddor pool (heated) and rather cold outdoor pool with pool bar closed. Whole of top floor closed so only one restaurant in use and that not well signposted. Amenities at hotel not well advertised and need replacing.

However, as a quiet location with landscaped surroundings, has to be recommended. But certainly not 5 star, more like 3

  • Liked — Near to the beach plus a pool

My Wife and I have just returned from a 7 night stay at this hotel. We where hoping for a week of sun and relaxation and this hotel certainly did the business. Large, if somewhat dated rooms, but very clean. We asked for an upper, quiet room and were given a room on the sixth (of ten) floor facing east but still with a sea view. The reception area is very impressive and the hotel as a whole is spacious if compared with modern hotels. Two large swimming pools, one indoor, are pristine. The gardens are large, quiet and well maintained. We certainly spent a lot of time on sunbeds enjoying this enviroment. The hotel is literally on a fabulous clean beach.

The down side of this hotel is the food. If you like continental breakfast with fresh fruit; no problem. The English/American style breakfast though is not up to standard. The hotel is situated about 10-15 minutes walking distance from the wonderful Vilamoura Marina. Plentiful restauarnts surround this facitity and we recommend you try Fairways, Old Navy and Ciao.

The hotel is not ideal for familes with childre older than say 3 or 4. The simple reason being that there is no entertainment for older kids. It is more suited to couples, empty nesters and those looking for R & R without a pool full of noisy childeren.

Altough the hotel is not a true 5 star, we would certainly return.

The publicity photos posted of this hotel posted on most websites make the property look rather dated. And it is! It may have won its five star status in the 60's, but in 2006 this hotel boasts a sort of faded glory...

BUT...what this clean and spacious hotel does offer is its unique location. Right next to the uncrowded beach, a huge pool (which never became crowded) surrounded by immaculate lawns offering shady palms and plenty of sunloungers and parasols and space.

Unlike the more modern hotels built in close proximity to each other around the marina (just a 5 minute walk away) this hotel stands alone, which means almost all rooms offer unobstructed views of the sea.

The neighbouring town of Quiteirra is just a 5 minute walk away in the opposite direction to the marina, and it is here that the Portuguese socialise and dine in the restaurants along the long promenade where street performers and craft stalls offer evening colour for those people who might be tired of the rather artificial and commercial ambience of the Vilamoura marina.

The Atlantis offers a breakfast buffet which was comprehensive, offering hot and cold food, but with consistently stale croissants and a very surly chef overseeing matters, who could do with a personality transplant.

The poolside restaurant area offers lunch with a small salad bar but the menu is very limited and doesn't really cater for those just wanting a good quality snack - since even the salad bar is only available with a main course. We noted a lot of people checking out the menu and walking away.

The gym was hopeless, with a couple of pieces of rickety equipment that seemed dangerous to me.

We were at the Atlantis a week and wouldn't hesitate to return, but would urge a complete refurbish of the place, bringing it into the 21st century and a review of its 5 star status.

  • Liked — It's beachside location and no neighbouring buildings
  • Disliked — Extremely tired decor
  • Tips/Secrets: — First room offered was on the 3rd floor with no view, facing out onto a concrete wall. Asked for a change and got a room on the 5th floor with wonderful sea views. Walk 5 minutes to neighbouring Quiteirra for a taste of real Portugal

We have just returned from a week in the algarve which was absolutly fab.The area of vilamoura was gorgeous unfortunately the accomodation was terrible!!The hotel needs to be completly updated and our room was like a throw back to the seventies. I would not recommend staying there to anyone. The beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on!!The food was really bad and even the coffee was not even drinkable!!We were so disappointed considering we paid almost €1500 for the week.
