“Noisy and in need of a make-over”

Dom Pedro Portobelo

The hotel has a great location, 100m from Marina and 100m from beach. We had a sea view room on the 8th floor which had a great view. However the hotel is directly opposite the Vilamoura Casino which can be very noisy at closing time (4am) with cars and people shouting!

When we stayed the pool was being refurbished (which we weren’t advised of) which meant a lot of noise from the builders (7am-7pm) but we were able to use the facilities of the two partner hotels which were 50m away.

We had a Studio room (including fully furnished kitchen) which was very spacious and well fitted out although as with many hotels, the lack of clothes hangers was a nuisance.

The decor is in need of some TLC, with damp patches and cracking plaster in the bathroom and wood trim and air-con vents hanging off in the bedroom.

“Great Hotel, Great Location”

After reading mixed reviews about this hotel, my friend and I were very plesantly surprised. A large hotel in a great location near the marina. Its linked with the Dom Pedro Marina and Dom Pedro Golf, and we could use all the facilities at all 3 hotels, the spa at the golf hotel was gorgeous and brand new! a great way to spend the afternoon! The pool at the portobello was closed, which we knew before we arrived and we could use the other hotels instead, it made no odds, they were so close, the beach a 2 min walk. The staff were friendly, and the room was huge! very clean and tidy - couldn't fault it. The breaskfasts in the mornings were fine, a hot option and cold buffet.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to stay in Vilamoura and wants a good location. There are some fab restaurants especially Don Alfonso where the Chateaubriand was just the best!! A brilliant break!

    • Disliked — the bar area was a little quiet, but the bars at the other Dom Pedro hotels close by were better...

First of all this hotel is rated as a 4 star..A 2 star rating would be more appropriate.i booked this hotel because it is advertised as 4 star facilities and service with the privacy of self cataring. In my opinion it offered neither. We booked and paid for a sea view room on hotels.com..When we arrived with our 8 month old daughter we were giving a room at back of hotel with no sea vtew.We complained right away and were told they had no sea view rooms left.We explained that this is what we booked and paid for.The guy at reception asked us to view a room at sister hotel. He said to ask for paolo so we went with baby in toe and after being ignored and brushed off by girl at forum reception, eventually got to speak to another guy as paolo was not there. At this stage an hour had passed. The room had no kitchenette and no sea view.So we returned to portobelo and eventually we were giving a sea view room. When we got to the room i looked down to see a building site where the swimming pools should be.We were furious.already our holiday had been spoilt. If the hotel had advised us of building work i never would have booked it.The next morning the hammers and kangoes started up next door to us.I thought they were having a laugh.Inside and out was a building site.It got worse that afternoon,we didn't even go into our room.We went to reception to complain, they moved us to the back of hotel to a stale musty room.We had been on the ninth floor,at one stage the only lift down wouldn't work.I rang reception and she laughed saying there was nothing she could do.I asked did she think it was funny and asked to speak to the manager, then she hung up.I have never stayed in a worse "4 star" hotel in my life. The decor was old and dated. The staff were a joke. The restaraunt was dead,as was the bar.I cant think of 1 good thing to say about this hotel. If your thinking of booking it all i can say is dont. They offered us free meals but we didn't want to be in that hotel a minite longer than we had too.We settled for a free weekend in any of the three dom pedro hotels in vilamoura.we might use it,but if we do it definitly wont be in the portobelo.

Just returned from a two day stay at this hotel. Thankfully it was only two days! From the outside the hotel looks fine, and defines perfectly the old saying 'Don't judge a book by it's cover'. On entry it is like passing through some sort of time machine and going back thirty years. The rooms are discraceful! The furtinure and fittings are ancient. The inside of the kettle has more limescale than I have ever seen. the bathroom was dark and the fittings were disgusting.

Although the staff were in the main, friendly I think they had even given up because they only done enough to pass off any service that was expected of them.

The pool is undergoing refurbishment and when questioned the staff did not know when this would be completed. Watching the pace of the builders on-site I can understand why!

In such a prime location I cannot understand how this hotel is still open. It will remain a mystery.

if you are going to Vilamoura give this one a miss!

stayed at dom pedro may 2007 had our meals accross the road at sister hotel food excellent and service the same.rooms a little dated but were clean and tidy.overall we enjoyed our stay with i exception on the first morning on our way back from our breakfast we were approched by a time share rep who had total access to the dom pedro hotel rooms for sales purposes and even had their offices on the grounds of the hotel.I was very tempted to purchase a share but thanks to the internet facilities in the hotel we discovered that the company selling the properties were on a list of time share companies that were blacklisted.the fact that they had total access to apartments in the complex and their offices in the grounds made it very convincing.we reported the matter to managment at the hotels in question but they were not interested.
