“Lovely hotel - but skip the restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013 via mobile

Junior suite was fabulous, huge very comfortable bed, lovely views and very quiet. Nice entertainment in the bar area, close to casino and marina. Ate the buffet in the evening in the restaurant, very poor and very expensive. Breakfast was average. Reception staff were friendly and polite. Wi-fi was free in the suite, and if you want to connect more than 2 devices, just ask! Would definitely stay again , but would stick to a bar meal, which looked lovely

We've just returned from a 4 night stay at the Crowne Plaza. On arrival the reception staff we're friendly and helpful. We did arrive early, & our room was not available. The lady on reception took our phone number & promosed that she would call us once the room was ready. However she did not call & we just went back to the hotel & the room was ready.
The rooms are lovely, clean & modern. Could not complain about them.

We had breakfast included which consisted of a nice selection.

Pool area - totally agree with other reviews on this. There is not enough beds & people do put their towels on them 'in case' they use the pool area. We only spent one day at the pool as I couldn't be bothered to get up early & worry about getting beds. Did not use the bean bags as they were damp & smelly. On the day that we did sit by the pool there was a couple of women who had put their towels on 2 beds & came down after us. Lunchtime they went to lunch & did not return for approximately 4 hours!! When they did return they grabbed another 3 beds as soon as they became free, put towels on them but no one came to use them! I did have a moan to the staff as we only managed to find one bed at first however the staff just said they cannot remove the towels & just shrugged their shoulders! Other hotels we've been to remove the towels after 2 hours if not used; which I think is totally fair, they do allow longer over lunch time. I really think the Crowne Plaza need to enforce something like this.

The beach - absolutely perfect! Very clean. Nice bar man who would walk around taking drink orders. There is a lovely beach bar called Maresia Beach Bar which I would recommend.

The marina was lovely, however very busy & we preferred the more traditional restaurants set back off the marina.

Overall we had a lovely holiday and would go back.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We have just returned from at week holiday at the hotel. This is our second time at the hotel, and we had a great experience last year, so we had no hesitations choosing it again. However we were a bit disappointed.

First the good things.
We had booked a junior suite and was very kindly upgraded, however we actually did decline, since we like to two floor you have in a junior suite.
Very nice rooms, great bed, good cleaning and nice balconies. There is a Nespresso coffee machine in the room, however you need to call reception and pay 2 euro per cup. Normally there are free coffee in 5 star hotel rooms. The mini bar is empty and the package you have to buy is not very good. Instead we used the local supermarket.

The spa and treatment is great. The pool is nice, however ridiculous that you are not able to get a bed if you sleep a bit long. People should not be able to reserve at 6 a.m. and turn up 6 hours later.
The kids area with the pirate ship is great, and the activities for kids are fantastic.

However the reason why we don't think this is a 5 star hotel is the staff - and probably the hardest thing to make changes to. they are more or less all very nice and smiling, however extreme slow.
We had lunch at the hotel 5 days. The selection is ok. The quality of the food could get better, but they need to work harder. Normally we could easily wait 15-20 min for our drinks and 45-60 min for the food and they should only make sandwich etc. That's not ok. And it was all the time. One day we asked for cheese to the spaghetti - it came 20 min after we got the meal, and then it was eaten up!!!
And if a waiter don't speak English, they should point it out instead of taking an order just by nodding. Then we can't know that it haven't been ordered.

All in all a great vacation, but they should definitely improve on their staff.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

Stayed for 12 nights ending August 2nd.
You have to bear in mind this is graded by someone to be a 5 star hotel. I agree with the majority of comments that it is by no means a five star hotel by UK standards.
Starting with the positives:
Location of hotel: Good with a very clean, well maintained beach a short stroll away. Equidistant from the marina to the west and Vilamoura town to the East.
On the beach: the beach sun-beds are reasonably priced and there is a beach-side cafe/toilets etc. A guy comes round the beach sun-beds regularly to take orders for food/drinks.
Vilamoura marina:
This is a short 10 minute stroll away and is attractive for your evening meal. You can choose from the bog standard Pizza Hut to good quality Portuguese cuisine. However the Marina is somewhat sterile; more a parking space for lots of 'mediocre gin palaces' with very little active sailing going on. The gin palaces were all in darkness each night unlike Greek or Spanish harbours where there are a lot of 'yachties' tying up and pottering about.
If you have time check out the trips; we had an enjoyable reef fishing trip and saw a school of dolphins as a bonus!
The Crowne Plaza Hotel itself:
The reception/concierge/poolside staff were good, polite and ok but nothing special. When we checked in in the afternoon we were told that our son's bed would be prepared straight away. By 10pm we had to call reception to remind them. Not a promising start.
The ground floor facilities are very pleasant; again more like a good 4 star hotel. There are two pool tables near the bar area and you will be charged according to how long you use them.
There is a tiny shop selling essentials including English newspapers. Nothing like the shops you typically see in 5 star hotels.
There is free wifi in the reception area and a couple of computers for anyone to use. If you book a deluxe suite as we did, you also get free wifi in your room but remember to ask for a personal password. If you book a deluxe suite you also get one free spa session (I only knew because I asked specifically as to what de luxe suite clients can expect to receive included in the price). We also had daily access to the poolside restaurant for breakfast which starts at 8.30. The poolside restaurant is okay; service was a bit hesitant and hit and miss. Staff not on task and not well trained. When we wanted to eat earlier than 8.30, we thought the service and food in the main restaurant was a little better!
Our deluxe suite (Room 1118) looks west over the casino/seaview and being on the top (11th) floor it means that you are not disturbed by external noise. There are two white leather sofas on the balcony. By the afternoon they are red hot as the afternoon sun beats down on them as there is no shade. We loved the high quality cotton bedlinen and the en suites on both levels were okay. However we had no bath; again a disappointment when you are paying for a five start deluxe suite. The maid service was average. We had a fridge awkwardly located in a cupboard under the stairs leading up to our bedroom (ours was a split level suite) which meant that you invariably banged your head after bending down to open the fridge. See photos by Eileen Dover. The ice bucket had to be replenished by going all the way down to the bar and bringing it back up to the 11th floor. Why no ice machine on the 11th floor? In our experience, we would say that we have stayed in much better suites for a comparable price around the Med/Canaries.
I want to add my say about the poolside sunbeds!! As other trip advisors have suggested, if your idea of a relaxing holiday is to have a poolside sunbed to lounge around on (and the pool is nice), you will have to go with the herd mentality which prevails and get up at the crack of dawn. Some people were bagging beds as early as 0500. We found ourselves joining the pack creeping down when the moon was still bright. The alternative is a smelly red slug (read on). However what angered me were the selfish sun-bed baggers who then failed to appear for most of the day! I noted on one day about a dozen sun-beds 'bagged' with towels and other items which were unused for most of the day. For example, one young Portuguese man had bagged 5 beds. He eventually appeared at 5pm. A couple of his friends emerged between 5pm and 6pm. (I made a note) which still left two precious sun-beds vacant and not used all day. On one occasion another Portuguese man accused us of stealing his sunbeds! Furious I stomped off to the reception staff to complain only to met with a shrug of the shoulders and the comment ' This is a new problem for us'. The man later apologised.
As to the red bean bag affairs; they look like red blood blisters or slugs living on the grassy area. We tried them and thought they were uncomfortable, smelly and very damp. How a five start hotel can offer these to guests is beyond me. We assume that the grassy area is too windy for sun-beds.
Okay we managed to have a reasonable holiday but only because we did the dawn sun bed patrol, we enjoyed eating out each night and the beds were clean and comfortable. If I could offer advice to the manager, Jose, I would suggest he does a deal with the beach sunbed operator and offers free beach sun beds when the demand for poolside sun-beds exceeds supply (which is probably every day in high season) Get rid of those red slugs and find another solution for those who want a relaxing lazy holiday near the pool.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza for 2 weeks at the beginning of July, and overall, found it to be a perfectly acceptable hotel. I would basically agree with adverse comments made in earlier TA reviews, but being realistic, they are mostly little niggles and not worth worrying about – no hotel is perfect! Yes, it would be nice if WiFi was available in the rooms, but at least with having to go down into the public areas, you are interacting with other people, and can do a little people watching at the same time! However, there are 2 major areas of discontent with which we are in total agreement –
1. Breakfast. I started off thinking that other reviewers were being unfair, but after a while, I was a firm believer that the breakfast experience is a bad one. Getting coffee was a problem. There are plenty of staff, but they all seem to cover the whole dining room – they should each have their area to look after so that they concentrate on keeping their area’s tables cleared, and ensuring coffee is swiftly served. On the plus side, I do approve of the hot milk that is served with the coffee. And . . the coffee tastes a whole lot better than it looks . . don’t despair when first you see it. The choices for breakfast are quite good (not 5* though) but the quality is really disappointing (definitely not 5*). And how they can call those round tasteless yellow things “pancakes” is unknown. Get a pancake chef.
2. Sunbeds. Woefully inadequate in number. I looked from the balcony at 7.30am and already there were towels on sunbeds – that really should be stopped. Some afternoons, we saw towels on sunbeds but no-one sitting on them for several hours – also should be stopped. The beanbags are ok, but again, insufficient number. As someone else said, they can be smelly which is hugely off putting. Also, many people were laying on 2 beanbags – another activity that should be stopped. We tend to head out in the afternoon, and most of the time, could not find a sunbed or a beanbag to lay on. The beach is close by, and we were happy to go there, but we also like to swim. The waves were too ferocious for swimming most of the time, and you can’t pop back from the beach for a dip in the pool. The pool is lovely, by the way. We had a walk around the Tivoli Marina hotel, and did notice that they have LOADS of sunbeds. We hope to return to Vilamoura, and this issue is big enough to affect which hotel we go to.
Generally though, the hotel is lovely, the Deluxe room met expectations, as did the public areas. The bar staff were offhand and ignore you, but the reception staff were very helpful on the odd occasions we asked for something. We ate in the hotel restaurant one evening, choosing from the A La Carte menu, and have to say, although pricey, it was an excellent meal in terms of quality and presentation, and one of the best we had.
Eating out was generally very good, although we found it more expensive than in England. Eating around the Marina (frantic, crowded and impersonal) was very soon abandoned in favour of other restaurants. We particularly recommend, Chicos, Tempo, and, in the old village, Casa do Largo. All offered really good food and service, and, particularly in Chicos, a welcome usually reserved for old friends! A taxi to the old village was around E5 from the taxi rank near the Casino, and well worth it – it is picturesque, and the tranquility is a welcome change to the rather faster pace near the Marina. Casa do Largo offers short horse and carriage rides on certain evenings – this was very nice – and the quality of the food was excellent, served in a lovely setting. Another important food related recommendation – if you like a really good curry, have one before you go.
We liked the resort of Vilamoura – it’s lively and easy to get around – there are cut-throughs for pedestrians everywhere – and we found the local people to be very friendly and helpful, and all spoke English very well. There are lots of places to sit in the evening, although the prices of drinks can vary. We found good prices (i.e. cheap) in a bar called El Matador – just off the marina to the right - and, surprisingly, cheap prices for drinks in the Casino where you can just walk in, wearing anything, wander round, have a drink, wander out again. We also got a warm welcome in Deck 21 where we went twice to watch a live rock band, SaintGarden – highly recommended.
Walking to the marina (cut through the Casino car park) takes 10 minutes just to get to the entrance, but there are a few bars and restaurants close to the hotel (head to the right) for lunch and dinner if you don’t want to walk far. We had several very good pizzas at Romano Pizzeria.
We were thinking of hiring a car, but had difficulty as all cars were already hired. Maybe a good idea to arrange this before you go if you are wanting to travel out of the resort. We went on a dolphin safari, and were lucky enough to see a big pod of dolphins, including babies. They swam around the boat, jumping and diving, and seemed as interested in us as we were in them – amazing.
The sandy beach is nearby, reached by a short wooden walkway over the dunes –there is beach bar on the walkway which is good for a drink afterwards. The sea was warmer than the pool, but as mentioned, huge waves prevented us from swimming more often than not. It’s not really a suitable beach for children due to the waves and a strong undertow which knocks you off your feet if not careful.
Final word – take mosquito repellent.

Firstly before making a decision on this hotel by scanning through bad reviews let me say some people will moan about the most pathetic things, main points for people moaning are sun beds- most hotels you'll go too the beds will be gone by 8.30-9am this is the case here I went down at 8am every day and managed to get beds in a good location. There are no towels on beds at Mid night as some reviews suggest! Breakfast and evening meal food was fantastic, not sure how anyone's food could be 'luke warm', evening meals were of a really high standard. Bedrooms are very modern and spacious plus very clean. There is a excellent gym on site to use, very quiet in the mornings. Hotel is situated 5 mins from the marina and is on the beach front. The kids pool is amazing for young children & very safe, we were able to relax by the pool knowing my 2 year old would be perfectly safe playing in the pool, on the pirate ship on spending time with the animation team who set up a table outside to occupy the children. Amazing hotel and we cant wait to return for a third time next year!

Room Tip: All rooms are outstanding.

We have just come back from 10 days at the Crowne Plaze Vilamoura, Portugal and had a great time. The staff are very friendly and helpfull, the hotel is very clean and has great services.
We upgraded when we arrived to a junior suite to have extra room for the cot for our 15 months old son. Make sure you ask for the quite side away from the casino, although our parents were facing it and didn't hear a thing as the balcony doors are super thick. Our room was beautifull, very spacious, great sea view from the 8th floor, quiet. the bathroom has glass wall into the room which is fun but does have a blind for those moments when you need privacy! mini bar which you have to asked to be stocked up and pay, safe, tv, cofee machine ( have to ask and pay for cofee etc) bed was huge and really comfy. Cleaned everyday and free water bottles left each day.
The kids pool is brilliant. Gated so you feel safe if they run around. A pirate ship adventure climbing thing was a godsend as my son pottered around on it and the Kids club was great. Big thanks to marisa, pedro and Bruno as they put up with my son charging in and throwing the playdoh, pencils and crayons around. They are there all day and your children can come and go as they please. they played great games and had activities so you can have some relaxation time in the sun.
You do have to get out before 8am to get your towel on a sunbed round the main pool. They also have these great 'fatboy' sun bean bags everywhere else which do go fast so you need to get down there quick too, but this is all part of the holiday sending your husband down to do it!
Breakfast was plentifull and very tasty no problems there.
Lunch in the restaurants was lovely but the only niggle I would say is they maybe need to change the menus every few weeks and the kids menu too.
A short walk and you are in the Marina with lots of restaurants to choose from.

I coulnd't really fault it and we are looking to book for next year.
We had a great holiday so thankyou very much Crowne Plaze we would definatly recommend to everyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher room await from the casino if you are really picky but all rooms are very quiet due...
