“Small castle, interesting location on the IJsselmeer”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Castle Radboud is a small landmark in the sleepy recreational harbor of Medemblik. The castle was much smaller than we expected, but the exhibit is worth a quick visit for anyone interested in a little Dutch history. Check the website for more information and visiting hours. We biked along the IJsselmeer and found a very cute petting zoo nearby, making for a fun and interesting afternoon. The castle did not serve as a residence, but was built for defensive purposes.

“Quick stop for a castle fix”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

If you are looking for a reason to do a daytrip to Medemblik, this castle is partially worth the drive. The castle itself is really not reminiscent of the middle age, since it has been extensively rebuilt. The outside is nice for photo ops, so it's good for shutterbugs. There isn't a lot in the way of exhibits in the castle, and there are no placards in English. They do provide you with a three-ring binder with English information but it was much too unwieldly to lug around - a pamplet would have been easier. Across the way there is a small park with a cute little petting zoo which has goats, sheep and piggies. It was a nice way to spend an hour or so and if you couple a visit to the castle area as well as lunch in Medemblek followed by a short stroll around (especially if their little market is going on) it is a very nice daytrip.

“Pictorial small castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

Good place to take photo - castle located near harbor.
It is a good view to castle from facade and right wing.
There is some kind of "wind rose" in front of facade on the ground.

“Small castle - look on their website for planned events.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

Kasteel Radboud is a small castle dating from the Middle Ages, and is quite pretty to look at from the outside. The entrance fee is five Euros and fifty cents for adults, which I thought was quite pricey for what there was to see. However, these places need to make enough to survive! If like me you have a Dutch Museum card, entry is reduced to one Euro.

The castle is best visited on a day out in Medemblik combined with the steam tram and paddlesteamer trip out of Enkhuizen or Hoorn (www.stoomtrammuseum.nl) which is again completely free if you have a Museumkaart. You can also visit the Old Bakery Museum in Medemblik.

Inside the castle there are a few rooms to see, including a prison and an exhibition of what life was like there in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately nothing is translated into English, so if you don't speak any Dutch this will probably be lost on you!

However, from time to time, a Dutch reenactment group puts on special weekends there acting out what life in the Middle Ages was like so please check the castles website to see if there will be anything interesting before your visit.

Worth it for the pleasant walk through little Medemblik, and the nice view of the castle as the paddle steamer arrives in the town.
