I shared a great meal with my wife and her parents. We ate in the Indonesian side of the restaurant and had the rijstaffel (sp?) for four.
The restaurant has a fun decor - highlights were the palm frond umbrellas, baskets, and even dragons and locust adorning the walls and ceiling. The food was great - I've had rijstaffel at three spots in Amsterdam and this food was equal or better than the fare at Sama Sebo and much better than the tourist-book favorite of Kantjil & de Tijger. We took the standard spread which included 2 beef dishes, 2 pork dishes, 2 chicken dishes, 1 fish dish, 2 warm veggie dishes, 3 cold veggie dishes and some fried bananas for desert (plus white rice and fried rice). You can upgrade the meats to lamb / prawns, but we didn't take this option. My favorites where the two pork dishes. And at 25 euro/person this was a tremendous value!!!
Despite having delicious food, the highlight of our experience was how well our server Jervel took care of us. I speak English only, my wife speaks English and Russian, and her parents speak Russian only. They were in Amsterdam visiting us (she and I are both expats), and we were very relieved to discover that Jervel speaks perfect english. He showed tremendous patience with us as he explained all of the dishes while allowing my wife time to translate to her parents. Plus he kept a courteous smile throughout the evening, checked in on us frequently, and was incredibly friendly.
Naarden is a cool little town and we look forward to returning. When we do, we'll pay Bordjes another visit.
