“Leger Valkenburg Hotel Mixed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

My wife and I went with Leger's Vakenburg Coach Tour.

The De Bogaerde is called a sister hotel to the Walram, My wife and I were allocated a second floor room in the De Bogaerde. It was small (six inches between the bed foot and the cupboard). It was next to the noisy lift. We only slept in the room thank goodness. The beds were twins pushed together. The decor was non-existent. The flooring was carpet tiles onto either concrete or wood - whatever it was, it was hard and painful to kneel on.

The shower was fine. The toilet was high - I'm not small and my feet dangled :-). The bowl was that type that allows you to examine your doings before you flush.

We used the swimming pool - it was quiet. The water was warm and 1.5m deep. Towels are 1.60 euros and you are asked not to use room towels.

Room cleaning and towels were fine.

There are a few large internal steps to negotiate between hotels. Care is necessary as one of our group fell badly on them although thankfully came to no harm.

The breakfast was poor and always the same. The choice was: cold, overcooked scrambled eggs, hard, burnt streaky bacon, hard boiled eggs, three kinds of fatty cold meat, ham slice, chicken slice, various rolls and breads, doughy croissants, preserves, fruit, cereals, yoghourt, two kinds of cheese slice. There were 5 kinds of juice and hot drinks from machines.

Evening meals were very good: soup, main course with various (non-lettuce) salads, excellent sweets. Hot drinks were provided from machines.

Other coach companions also said their rooms were small,

Both hotels face a square opposite a convenient supermarket and cafe bar.

Staff were OK but table staff were young and not confident with English. Service could be slow.

With Leger, it is the luck of the draw whether you get put up in the de Bogaerde or the Walram but the latter is to be preferred.

Room Tip: Not next to a lift.

I also went on a Leger Christmas Markets trip and found a very different experience. The room was awful; tiny (it was supposed to be a double but I have stayed in more generous singles), cold, dirty carpet (tiles!) and worst of all mouldy. The inside of the windows were black with mould all around. We asked to be moved but there was no more room at the inn so we had to stay in this awful place for 2 nights until they moved us on the last night of our stay!
On the plus side (and the only reason for the 1 'star') was that the staff were helpful (if ineffectual) and the food was lovely, both breakfast and dinner.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the main part of the hotel and not the 'annexe' rooms as they are dreadful.

The staff were friendly and attentive, plenty of choice at breakfast as i don't eat meat i was a bit wary but i needn't have worried the evening meals were excellent i had fish both night, all 3 courses were very nice and the sweets were beautifully decorated.this hotel is very well situated for everything in Valkenburg i would definately stay here again.

Was on leger holiday nov 2011 , Had a single room , the bathroom was freezing no heating the shower was filthy , their was no window to the outside world just to a very small courtyard , but you couldnt open the curtains cos it was that cold .
And to add insult to injury i had to pay an extra £89 for this room ( Single supplyment why ?) .
I have been to Valkenburg a number of time and it is a lovely town but this hotel need close down . Wouldnt recommend to anyone .
It has put me off going with Leger again

We went on Leger coach tour for Christmas 2011 and stayed at the De Bogaerd in Valkenburg. This hotel and its sister hotel next door have been bought out by Best Western.
Our room was in a new part of the building at the back overlooking the river and a flock of geese on the bank. The room was comfortable, the bathroom looked new and was very clean.

The staff in recpeption were efficient and friendly and supplied us with details of the midnight mass times in the local churches. The bar and restaurant staff were polite and the service good. The food was excellent and always presented beautifully. I have never taken pictures of my food before !
Valkenburg is very pretty, lots of bars and restaurants, shops, caves and grottos and other attractions.
Leger drivers were great and the trip was organised very well . Several included excursions made it a good Christmas. No cooking and washing up! It was our first coach trip and would do it again.

Web for De Bogaerde has NO connection to the WALDRAM yet reception are working on the Waldram site. We ended up on the telephone and reception quite arrogant and did not see our point.
Found this to be a typical reaction from reception during our stay.
Christmas food and entertainment great. Room in the De Bogaerde at front, on square, needed repair, no heating until complained, left cold overnight..lovely! Gave us a large electric heater next day.
Only night porter when youngsters created riot outside and another group tried to smash in the front door. I asked that police be called. The police were too busy to come...nice one. They were only called at my request after nearly an hour of disruption.
Next morning the reception response was negative, excuses after excuses. Older folk, ladies and singles, left barracading their bedrooms expecting the worst. Night porter left vulnerable as well.
Could do much better for a Best Western Hotel.
Back rooms quieter and Waldram rooms more to standard....eg. heating.
Somebody is not checking and not appreciating their guests feelings. Reception lacking on town information and rely on the internet.
Meals, cleanliness and service great...pity about the rest.

Room Tip: Back rooms off square. In Waldram NOT Bogaerde part of hotel.
