The Prinses Juliana Hotel has recently been re-named the J Hotel. This is more than a name change - it seems that the hotel has also undergone a partial refurbishment. Parts of the hotel are rather modern and trendy looking, e.g. the lounge - very pleasant. However, what is a little jarring is that they have retained some of the old decorations from Prinses Juliana Hotel time and these are completely at odds with the current look and feel they are trying to create. E.g. the breakfast room or restaurant (which, by the way, is listed as one of the top two restaurants in Valkenburg by website [--]) has trendy furnishing, but retained the old chandeliers from the past. The grandeur of the chandeliers feels at odd with the modern trendy casual comfort of the new decoration.
The room is pretty big and generally clean, with big bathroom. The linen on the bed are clean and looks good. The downside about the room is that the furniture doesn't look too sturdy, and seems old-fashioned (again, gives a whole different feeling to the mood which the newly re-furbished lobby and lounge are trying to create). The TV is also at an awkward position - far away in a corner of the room, completely out of view from the bed, where there is only one uncomfortable chair to sit on (no table or another chair).
While the bathroom is big and completed with double sinks (!), bathrobes, hair-dryer, bath tub, etc., there is no shower curtain for the tub or a shower cabin. Therefore, if you prefer to take a shower instead of a bath, you need to do so carefully other, you will wet the entire bathroom.
Breakfast is very nicely served in a two-layer tea tray in the sunny / cheery restaurant. All food and drinks are served at the table instead of in a buffet line for you to 'self-service'. The service is good - prompt and friendly. But if you are like me, who prefer a sweet breakfast instead of a savory breakfast, then it may a disappointment for you. We were served sandwiches with old cheese, smoked salmon and osseworst. My usual preference is for chocolate croissant, etc.
Overall, the stay has been pleasant. The price we paid, EUR 95 in total, is reasonable considering the location (on a nice quiet street, within 5-10 minutes walk from the city centre) and the quality of the room and the free parking. However, would I stay there again... there is no strong pull factor...
