“Excellent hotel, fantastic experience, brilliant staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2010

We made a last minute booking here for a Sunday night in May as the Carbon Hotel in Genk had messed up our hotel booking (see previous review and do not stay there!).

The Sunday night rate is only 130 euros which is less than half of the standard and its worth every single cent! From the minute you arrive down the long drive everything is fantastic. The setting is stunning, the parking is free and convenient to reception, the staff are amazingly welcoming and when we arrived we could not check into our room yet so they gave us robes, slippers and took our luggage then directed us to the pool where we sat on loungers and ordered fantastic lunches by the pool. The rooms are very nice - they are old fashioned but you have everything you need and lovely products, hair dryer, iron and lovely views. Its peaceful, relaxing and a great place to be wined, dined and pampered. In the evening we ate in the Brasserie outside on the terrace - the food is not cheap but its worth it! Again, the staff were fantastic. You do not really need dessert as when you order a tea or coffee after dinner you get an amazing tiered tray of chocolates, truffles and biscuits! Breakfast was not included and we did not want to pay 25 euros so we hopped in the car and drove a few minutes to Valkenburg and sat outside a nice little cafe. Its touristy in Valkenburg but its great just to stop for a bite.

Would highly recommend Chateau St Gerlach to anyone! Once we returned home we even received a nice email checking we had a good time. This was such a contrast to the awful Carbon hotel which were not interested in our complaints of a bad stay and have still yet to respond to my email telling them all the things that went wrong during our stay.

I fully trust any Small Luxury Hotel of the world!

Beautiful hotel in a very attractive region of the Netherlands. Maastricht is very close and the surrounding area is beautiful and interesting for long walks. The hotel itself is nice with good amenities, however some small details could be better. Especially disturbing is a shower that hardly produces any water and certainly not around a time that everybody is taking a shower. Those are things you would not expect from such a hotel. The service is good and the breakfast great.

Beautiful hotel, great location next to the river the Geul. Quiet surroundings but close to Valkenburg. We had a 2 bedroom appartment. The appartment was great; livingroom including small kitchen, 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms. Everything nicely decorated.

We got a good deal on this hotel through priceline.com, so all in all, it was good value for money. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment for 4 people, and it was great (large, with an extra sitting room, a kitchenette, and a very quiet atmosphere, so we got a great night's sleep). The pool, sauna and steam room were all free for hotel guests, so that was a plus too.

However, we had two bad experiences with the service that were so frustrating that I don't think any of us will ever go back:

1. When we checked out, we told them about the rate from our priceline.com reservation printout, and the hotel staff told us they had "never heard of priceline" so it must not be legitimate. They let us use their computer to show them the booking, and finally, after much deliberation, they agreed to the rate. However, this wasted an hour of our time and made quite a scene that could have been avoided by educating the front desk staff on the booking agents the hotel is working with.

2. We ate at the restaurant and were extremely disappointed. It took 2.5 hours to serve us (even though we only ordered a main course). The food was VERY overpriced for the quality, and the atmosphere was so snooty that it was like being in a ultra-conservative corporate environment for an evening (no laughter, only suits and uptight looking guests). Granted, we were underdressed (we tried to get into the bistro, but it was late when we arrived, and the only place with a table was the restaurant, so we decided to pay the money and give it a try). However, we didn't have formal clothes, so we asked at the entrance if it was ok to go "as is", and they said yes, so we gave it a go. What a mistake. The waiters looked us up and down, and they even "conveniently forgot" to bring us our change when we paid the bill as they "ASSUMED we were leaving them a tip". Normally restaurants bring you your change, and then you can think about how much to leave as a tip. In this case, they just took the money. It's a little detail, but we found it rude (especially for a restaurant of this "supposed" caliber).

Stayed for three nights in one of the hotel rooms with a young baby and a toddler.
THe room was ok for size but the tiny windows made it feel smaller and dark.
Would consider a apartment room in the other building next time.
Ate in the both the bistro and the formal restaurant.
The bistro food is pretty standard. Service basic.
The restaurant is very high quality with matching service. The bill relfected this! Worth it for a special occassion. Lovely room. Make sure you dress well.
Service at the hotel in general was a bit below standard. Asked questions about bike rides and eating out at local places. Didn't really get good quality responses.
Small things like failure to put out new shampoos also a bit annoying.
The grounds are the best part of the hotel complex. They are very beautiful and extensive. Our toddler loved to run around and we loved our walk through the fields and forest nearby.
Pool also great .
Would recommend the hotel but choose room carefullly.

It's been some time since I visited a hotel where there was absolutely nothing to improve. But Chateau St. Gerlach was a perfect hotel. We booked a 2 room appartment and the appartment was roomy and cozy and most of all clean and complete. One living room on the ground floor and 2 bedrooms upstairs. Nice bathrooms with men and women grooming bags. Nice soft beds, and the price proved excellent value for money. We enjoyed a great breakfast and the staff was very proactive, very helpful.

The hotel has excellent spa and swimming pool facilities, a church on the hotelground that is breathtakingly beautiful. The location could not be better. The grounds of the hotel are big but well kept, and surrounding the hotel are the hills of Valkenburg and some great walking areas. And I was not the only one who was excited, my wife and my family were equally thrilled. I think if you really wanna treat yourself when you are in the south of the Limburg province in Holland this is definitally the place to be. I think this venue will be in my personal top 5 of best hotels I ever slept in. A 100% recommendation by yours truely. Can't wait to return to this hotel in the future.

I love the Chateau St. Gerlach. The grounds are exquisite and the decorating of the hotel and rooms was wonderful. Great Bistro dinner and breakfast.
