“Grandiose & nice setting but not my cup of tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

I stayed at St Gerlach for 4 days for a business conference In March 2012. The hotel is impressive to look at, has nice gardens and a nice spa / pool area. I ate breakfast and lunch here, which were alright (standard-fare for a hotel) although I didn't eat an evening meal here so can't comment.

The staff are friendly and helpful.

I was staying in a two level apartment style room which was pleasant enough although I found it a little cold (in the aesthetic sense of the word). The bathroom was huge - as big as the room easily!

Maastricht isn't the most exciting of towns in terms of nightlife but is located a reasonable distance from some bars and restaurants. Impressive since the pictures on the website give the impression that it's in the middle of nowhere!

No real complaints about the hotel other than that the wireless service is terrible. The signal comes and goes. Probably due to the sheer size of the hotel. They just need to add some additional routers for the rooms in the buildings further out.

Probably a good place to come to for a romantic getaway or if you're looking for a different side of the Netherlands.

Room Tip: The hotel is spread out across several buildings, so if you have mobility issues it's probably b...

Dear DomGuitar,

Thank you very much for your stay in Château St. Gerlach. We appreciate the time you took to note down your remarks. It is a pleasure to hear you have enjoyed your stay. Regarding your remarks about our wireless internet, we are aware that due to the thick walls and vast surroundings, the signal is weaker in some remote areas. We regularly measure the signal to reinforce where necessary. As you refer to the location of our estate, Valkenburg aan de Geul is located only 3 km from our estate. Maastricht on the other hand is a 15 minute drive from Château St. Gerlach, about 10 kilometer. If you would like to try a different room type for your next stay, we can recommend you one of our Deluxe Rooms or Suites. We are more then willing to show you a few of those rooms in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Kind regards,

Rachelle Pieters, Guest Relations

Chateau Gerlach is the ultimate luxury romantic weekend getaway - even if accompanied by two boisterous little boys (4 and 3). We booked a one-room apartment which was superb. The decor is luxurious, the little apartment is very well equipped and as it had an upstairs and downstairs it felt very spacious - allowing everyone in the family time to escape if they liked.
The great thing was that we were able to make supper for the boys in the kitchenette (there is a children's room service menu too if you're feeling utterly lazy or don't get to the supermarket in Valkenburg on time), put them to bed and then - making use of the free babyphone service - went across the courtyard to the charming Brasserie for a lovely dinner.
The staff were excellent: very polite, helpful and kind. We were greeted with smiles by all the staff and the boys were delighted with a little gift.
Even though all the buildings and grounds are beautifully maintained with elegant furnishings and art works, the atmospere never felt stuffy or restrained - just thoroughly luxurious and relaxing. A definite must if you fancy a romantic getaway - with or without kids.

Location and buildings are very nice, and this is an ideal place for 2-3 days walking or sight seeing in Maastricht. The restaurant offers very fine dinning against an historical backdrop. However, on the downside, the breakfast and swimming pool are mediocre, rather than classy. Couples on a romantic get-away might be somewhat annoyed by various large families. Do insist on a room in the main building, and not the apartments, which are 300 mtrs away and have far less charm. Fro groups, consider staying in Maastricht.

Room Tip: stay in the main building. book spa sessions well in advance, before arrival. consider staying in Kr...

Excellent friendly service, nice & comfortable rooms, each with its own style. Both the restaurant and Bistro offer quality and delicious food. The sommelier is very helpful and knowledgeable. If you wish to enjoy any spa treatment, book early!

Stayed here over weekend of 3/4 Nov. The place is located in excellent ground. They have a bistro and a more refined gasrto resto. We tried both with our children ( they provide for children meals ). We stayed in the senior suite, which was large , with 2 additional beds placed for our children. It has the feeling of being back in the past ( of Dickens days ). It would be great in summer to stroll through the grounds and near by walks. They have an excellent swimming pool, although any noise is frowned on because the doors are not made to keep the noise out of the spa area - so keep the kids quite ( contradiction in terms - pool/kids:no noise.
There is a great breakfast in the morning overlooking the a landscaped garden area - very pleasant indeed;

Room Tip: Maastricht is only 10 mins drive away, well worth a visit. Go in your dressing gown to the pool...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I took my daughter to St. Gerlach, merely because we wanted to enjoy the Spa and several treatments. So basically to have a relaxing time.
The surroundings of the hotel are beautiful, and the restaurants are really good, both the a la carte restaurant St. Gerlach and the Bistro. We liked the 'chateau-atmosphere' and the food was wonderful.
The rooms were not special, a bit in a country style, but okay. Very bad wifi, hopeless to use your smartphone.
The bathrooms were really outdated. They need a brush-up. But the worst thing were the bathroom-amenities: I mean in a hotel with a Spa you expect good shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo was the worst shampoo ever, and there wasn't even conditioner. For a Spa-hotel we found that a very bad service.
The treatments in the Spa were okay but not great. The building/swimmingpool looks nice but the beautician who gave us the the facial treatments, the waxing and the pedicure and the manicure was not very professional. We've had much better treatments in different beauty salons.
The reason why I give the hotel still 4 'stars' is because of the surroundings, the buildings, and the restaurants.

Dear flyingdutchie,

Thank you very much for taking time to review your stay in Château St. Gerlach.

We are changing our bathroom amenities. At the end of this year we will start with a new concept. The flavors in our new amenities are based on the herbs and fruits that grow on our estate. Would you like to speak to Pascal Gulpen, our Resident Manager, about how we could have made your spa and hotel experience better?

Kind regards,

Rachelle Pieters, Guest Relations

The location is wonderful. The buildings are superb. The restaurant is great. But there are some things that could be improved: The hotel facilities are not geared to the room capacity, so that there is regularly no place in the bar, or the swimming pool is packed. This is made much worse by the many events hosted at the hotel. It just doesn't fit! The attention to detail is low and staff range from mildly interested to downright rude. In my view this hotel is a victim of its own success and doesn't offer the premium quality you would expect for the price.
