“New hotel in business park near Schiphol airport”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

The Hampton by Hilton opened April 25, 2013, so everything is fresh, bright, and up-to-date. The hotel is about a 10 minute ride from Schiphol, depending on traffic in the area. The hotel provides a free shuttle bus from Schiphol; there's warning of a 7.50euro charge for the return trip; I don't know about that as I am writing this from my room here.

The Hampton is in a business park, surrounded by office buildings. So the plan is probably to get people doing business with companies located here as well as Schiphol travelers. The rooms are very nice, although soundproofing could be better. Opening rates are attractive as the hotel builds business. Room rates include a buffet breakfast as is the custom with Hampton Inns in the USA.

There is a very nice public park that borders the office buildings with a good higher-end restaurant, l'Hirondelle. Otherwise, there are few restaurants within walking distance of the Hampton (more may be open during office building hours). One could go back to the airport and take the train to Amsterdam Centraal to explore or dine.

Internet connection seems to be good and at no additional charge (a real plus). Overall, the new Hampton by Hilton is a nice place to stay.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Let me start by mentioning that at the time of my stay, this hotel had only been open for two weeks. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that I was there during their busiest time since their opening. I have many photos to share along with this review.

I booked my room via Hilton's website in the U.S. a day or two before arriving. Per their website, the hotel shuttle from Schiphol would run approximately every 30 minutes. Once I arrived at Schiphol I found that Hampton guests are picked up by the Holiday Inn Express / Crowne Plaza bus, with a couple of 9in x 11in Hampton logos taped inside the front and side windows. Hopefully this will be more visible in the future. According to the information in my hotel room, the shuttle from the airport is free but the return trip would be €7,60 - it wasn't clear if that was per person, per family, per room...? I never found out, because soon I discovered just how close the Hoofddorp train station is to the hotel. More on that later.

Arrival and check-in were pleasant and uneventful. I arrived around 10:30am on a Friday, and was immediately given my preferred room, on the highest floor at the end of the hall away from the elevators. The room was comfortably appointed with all the necessities in a typical European hotel, including a flat-panel TV, hot kettle, iron and board, and the necessary toiletries in mounted dispensers. I was grateful to find washcloths included among the bath linens, as they are not standard in Europe. I connected easily to the wifi, which was both free and perfectly adequate for my needs. The one area that seemed to be the most lacking was for clothes storage. There was no enclosed area, nor was there a luggage rack. My bag remained on the floor or in my bedside chair the entire time I was there.

The far entrance to the Hoopddorf train station's platform is directly across the road from the hotel. There is an automated ticket machine that never accepted my U.S. debit cards, but did accept coins. I purchased a round-trip ticket to Schiphol for €4,20 and from there headed to Keukendorf for the afternoon.

Once I arrived back at the hotel (via train) that night, I found that neither of the small wall-mounted lights on the sides of the bed worked, nor did the plugs. Everything worked fine on the opposite side of the room, so I was not without power for my electronics, but it was quite inconvenient. The main issue with the situation was that the alarm clock (standard Hilton issue with the preset music buttons on top) was running, but wouldn't play any sound so I wasn't sure the alarm would work. I realized the clock was running on its battery backup. I called down to the front lobby to report it and request a wake-up call, and Steve, the manager on duty, insisted on coming up to check it out. He generously offered to move me to another room, which I declined since I was only staying one night. I also pointed out a wall mirror that was still on the floor waiting to be hung, which was obviously not a problem but something to note.

I had no issues sleeping, save one. My bed was situated directly against the wall along the main hallway. Around midnight as I was trying to go to sleep, guests arrived with carts of luggage and were thoughtlessly having conversations in the hallway and slamming their doors. Each time a door slammed it literally shook my wall, and therefore my entire bed. Once I stuck my head out my door and addressed the situation, they immediately quieted down and there were no other issues. I don't know if all beds are situated against the hallway wall or if it was just mine (I was in a corner room), but it's certainly something to note.

The next morning I woke up to the clock's alarm, which worked just fine on the battery backup. I headed down to breakfast around 9am, which was chaotic. The serving area is relatively small with only one way in and out, so there is little room to maneuver with full plates and hot beverages. The food itself was quite decent, with the typical breads and pastries, both scrambled and soft boiled eggs, bacon and sausages, plus cold cereals, fruit, yogurt, and cold meats and cheeses in individual packages. There were assorted juices as well as coffees from a machine dispenser, and thankfully another juice and coffee dispenser in another area of the dining room.

Unfortunately the breakfast area was inadequately staffed, and supplies were low on many items. I had to search in three different areas before finding a fork, and I had to ask for napkins. While there were many comfortable places to sit, as time went on they remained unavailable because no one was assigned to clear the tables and there was no place for us to clear the tables ourselves. Eventually I saw one of the managers bus a table at the direct request of someone so they could sit there, but every other table around us remained unusable during the time I was there.

After breakfast I prepared to check out and move to another hotel for my next night. The shower worked just fine, but I did notice a decrease in my hot water as the shower went on. As I was blow-drying my hair I turned my head upside-down, and discovered the reason my reading lights and bedside plugs didn't work - apparently the wiring under the bedside table was never connected and completed! As it turns out, my room wasn't the only one with this problem. I found out during checkout that another guest had been moved for the same issue.

Checkout, unfortunately, was a complete nightmare. Upon arrival I had presented my card for a €50 "hold" for any incidentals. I was handed my final bill to sign, and upon review I found it was not the rate I had reserved. Turns out they had two separate bills for me, and no one knew why. This was in addition to the €50 authorization I had signed upon arrival. This discussion went on for some time, so I was grateful I wasn't in a hurry. I'll be watching both my HHonors account and my credit card statement to see what finally shakes out on my bill.

This hotel has great potential. They have an extremely convenient location if you are comfortable with using the train, and their facilities are quite nice and reasonably priced. But, if you are looking for a seamless stay with no issues whatsoever, you might want to give them a bit more time to work out their many issues.
