The I Am Hotel Amsterdam Airport is part of, and attached to the back of Hotel Schiphol A4.
In fact it shares with Hotel Schiphol A4 all the common amenities: reception desk, restaurant, business centre, wellness centre, swimming pool, sauna, gym, etc. They are both very large hotels, located in the middle of agricultural and farm land, about 5 km south of Schiphol airport.
The hotel has a large car park so is very handy for those travelling by cars. Travellers with no car can take the hotel shuttle bus to and from Schiphol airport. The shuttle bus serves both hotels and runs according to a fixed timetable from 6.00am to 23.40pm.
Each run to and from the airport takes about 15-20 min so the bus runs every 40 min between consecutive runs in the same direction. To take the shuttle from Schiphol airport, wait at the bus waiting bay A9-A13, just outside the airport terminal. The shuttle bus has the signage 'Van der Valk Shiphol A4'. A copy of the shuttle timetable is posted at the bus waiting bay.
As the hotel is very new and of modern design, decors, furniture and fittings are very new and sleek. Rooms are very spacious and open to large full-width balconies, overlooking landscaped garden and distant farm land. Bedding is very comfortable. However the facilities provided in the room are minimal and far fewer than what were offered by other 4-star hotels that I had stayed in elsewhere. For toiletries, only shampoo and bath gel are supplied. There are no tooth brushes, tooth paste, shaving cream, no slippers, let alone bath robes, and not even tissues. There is no fridge, no tea and coffee making facility, no clock.
Flat screen TV with many international channels is provided. Free wifi is available throughout the hotel.
There are no shops around the hotel. However there are a few food outlets in a food court complex that is next to the car park in front of the hotel. You can find there Burger King, KFC, Delifrance, La Place, Rancho Bar & Grill. Most are open till about 11 pm. Check them out for the exact opening hours if you intend to use them.
We did not use the hotel restaurant so cannot comment. Due to the large number of guests from both hotels, the restaurant is very busy and you need to book your table beforehand.
There are many trains running between Schiphol airport and Amsterdam Central station. Depending on the type of train, each run can take up to 15 min, without counting the waiting time. So it takes at least 40-45 min to go from the hotel to Amsterdam Central station by shuttle bus and then train. Cost of Schiphol-Amsterdam Central return train fare for each person is about 8 Euros.
If you are travelling by car and/or looking for some clean, modern comfortable hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam to unwind, relax, and to swim or have some physical workout then this hotel is a good choice. However if you intend to spend most of your time in Amsterdam for sightseeing, shopping, and late-night entertainment, then you have to take into account the time constraints and costs of travelling between the hotel and Amsterdam.
