Great hotel and reception very helpful at all times especially the tall young gentleman who could never do enough for us (i have forgotten his name!). Unfortunately we found the dining room staff unattentive and generally a bit miserable. We had a couple of meals over the Christmas holiday and ate there every morning at breakfast.
The first evening we booked after arriving on a late flight from the UK. Food was lovely although the staff where very uncommunicative and unfriendly. We however overlooked this as we enjoyed the food so much...the hamburger was cooked to perfection and reasonably priced for hotel food and thought maybe the staff where having an off night even though it wasn't that busy.
We booked for the Boxing night dinner service and when we arrived on that night the dining manager Stephanie informed us that they had no reservation for us. Well we were far from impressed as we had an early flight home in the morning hence why we booked dining in the hotel and not central Amsterdam. Stephanie said that her colleague who had booked the reservation said we needed to clarify the booking with reception and we didn't do that! We were never told to do this as of course we would have done! Why would we ignore that information if we had been told, making things awkward for ourselves?!! Stephanie continued to argue with us stating 'what can I do...i have no table for you!'. We said we wanted to see the manager and she said 'I am the manager'. We said 'no the general manager'. At any one time she did not apologise for the mistake made by her staff and could quite easily had diffused the situation and my anger by saying a simple sorry! She then went off to speak with her colleague and informed us she could possibly fit us in in the next half an hour. And true to her word she did but it kind of left a nasty taste in our mouths and the dining staff where no better in their service and attitude!
Also at breakfast you have to seat yourselves and this caused problems with many large tables of 6 only having 2 people sitting there. I think the waiting staff could economise on this better as when you did find a seat in busy times there was dirty plates etc as not enough staff to clear away efficiently and quickly for the next patrons and having to eat at someones dirty tablecloth.We had to clear away the plates and cutlery ourselves. It spoiled an otherwise pleasant stay.
