“Good location for Schipol”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Spent 1 night here on way home from Venice so could then get direct flight home to USA. Only short distance from Airport and having taken taxi found there was a free shuttle but no big deal.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Our room package included breakfast which was plentiful and a great buffet selection. We also ate dinner at the hotel and food and staff were excellent. Free wi-fi excellent in room. Very quiet hotel and would definitely stay again. In morning took the free shuttle to the airport which runs about every 20 mins.

I am not sure why our tour group booked us in this far away hotel, probably because of the rate.

It was a pain to get to the city, it took us roughly an hour even at night. We took the hotel shuttle to Schipol then we'd take the train from Schipol to the city and back.

The hotel is near the airport coming from the hotel, if from the airport going to the hotel it is near but the taxi/bus need to go around some highway and it takes quite some time to get to the hotel.

Stayed here 1 Sunday night before flight. The Novotel is located a few miles from Schiphol near the village of Badhoevedorp. It was easy to find by car. The rate was 230 euros per night (expensive but this was a late booking as I needed to stay near the village)

There are about a dozen steps up to the hotel entrance and as it was raining very hard when I arrived I didn't see an alternative entry/exit for wheelchair users - you may want to check with the hotel if this is a need for you? I'm sure they cater for all guests but I felt the entrance was very unwelcoming for those with any sort of physical disability

Check in staff was welcoming and very friendly - they spoke english too which is great as I don't speak Dutch. Was given a room on the 6th (top) floor. There are 2 lifts just off the lobby area. Also off the lobby area was a colourful gift shop, a seating area which one group was using for a meeting, a set of shelves displaying stuff for sale - small beers/wines/soft drinks and snacks etc so that you could stock your room mini-bar if you wanted to.

The room turned out to be a "mini suite" and whilst it was adequately sized and clean it was a horrible design (at least I think so) Its one of those rooms where the bathroom is actually part of the bedroom - a large jacuzzi bath, sink/mirror etc, separate shower and WC (both enclosed by a glass door) This of course means little or no privacy if you want it - it also means that if you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night you have to put the light on for the whole room - waking up your partner! A crappy design...neither stylish nor romantic.

The towels were very small and thin - poor quality. Toiletries were OK but not a well known brand.

Tea and coffee making facilities were in the room (always a plus) and there was also free wi-fi which was very quick to connect to and use. TV was old and not flat screen. Couldn't find a TV guide either.

The hotel is very quiet at night - we didn't hear any other guests but we did hear some of the aeroplanes despite being a long way from the airport.

We ate at their restaurant on the Sunday evening - I had a club sandwich (tasted OK but was expensive at 15 euros given the ingredients) and OH ate a thai prawn dish which was delicious. He also had dessert as he chose a 2 course set meal for 19 euros. The set meal choices were very limited but I think overall they just about represented good value at hotel prices. We shared a carafe of wine which was 16 euros - this was quite drinkable but I'm not a wine expert so others may disagree. Our serving staff were lovely - very friendly. It was a pleasure to talk to them.

There wasn't much of an atmosphere in the restaurant as all the other guests seemed to be pilots talking about their trips. We noticed this again in the morning...lots of flight crews. As we were leaving about 15 cabin crew from an asian airline turned up which meant the lifts became very busy but it was all sorted within 10 minutes.

Breakfast wasn't included in the room rate and at 19 euros each was expensive given the quality & choice of food. The wait staff on duty were once again really helpful and cheerful - I enjoyed talking to them all. The manager of the restaurant worked very hard - she was constantly checking everything which was impressive.

Conclusion - the rooms need a refurb - horrible cold blue colour scheme is very dated. Towels and toiletries should be much better for the rates charged.

One final extra charge was self-parking - another 15 euros.

All in all, the costs really mount up and I wouldn't choose to stay here again due to the cost and the need for a room refurb. Their staff are their biggest asset by far.

My normal experience of Novotel hotels (Paddington and Reading in the UK) are of
stylish places that ooze modernity in decor and facilities. Well, this isn't one of them but it does get a lot of things right.

From check-in through to the restaurant, bar - and even the somewhat twee gift shop - I was met by well-intentioned staff. Check-in was efficient, the restaurant and bar friendly and pleasant and check-out equally organised. The place was very well-kept, it was clean and everything worked.

What lets it down is the antiquity of the rooms: I can't remember the last time I saw an old-style non-flatscreen television in a room, but this place still has them. Similarly the furniture was a bti ancient, although it was all in good condition. I can only repeat that it was spotless and in good condition, but for EUR125/night it could be better.

For what I needed - a bed, something to eat and an easy trip to/from Schipol, it was fine. It's the kind of functional place that delivers a service in an easy to use form that tired long-haul passengers transferring between flights would fall into gratefully. It would be OK base for tourism around the area, but you;d be better off staying Amsterdam if you;re taking a city break.

As for the pricing, I would struggle to justify this if I'd been paying for myself (I was on business) given the cheaper options nearby.
