My husband and I stayed at the hotel Panorama in July 2008. We are both in our late 30s and have travelled quite a lot, staying in everything from luxury 5* hotels to crummy little B&Bs and I would definitely give this hotel the thumbs up.
Initially I was a little disappointed when I saw our room. There was nothing at all wrong with it, you understand, it was tastefully (and recently) decorated and overlooked the lake. It was beautifully clean but just lacked that certain something. If I were to try to pick fault the only things that I can come up with are that the pillows were a bit hard and flat (only one each), the knob had come off the shower so that we couldn't alter the height and the toiletries provided were a bit cheap and nasty. Nothing really major as you will appreciate and once we had settled in it was fine.
The rest of the hotel was nicely and recently decorated, granted not to some people's tastes, but I personally thought it was fine. (No horrible wallpaper or scarey carpets..nothing like that!) Also it was spotlessly clean.
The hotel itself is situated just outside Limone so it is nice and peaceful. Some of the other hotels are right in the centre and were quite noisy. I much prefered the location of our hotel. There is a nice cobbled walkway into Limone which we used a lot. The walk itself takes about 20-30 minutes and we found to be very enjoyable morning and evening but, be warned, there are a few hills (nothing major)along the way that could be a problem for someone less able. The walkway was lit at night which was nice and we walked home most evenings, as did many other people.
There is a hotel courtesy bus which does regular trips into Limone but for some reason we found the times didn't seem to coincide with our plans. (For example in the evening you could return from Limone at either 9 oclock or 11.30pm. There was nothing in between. That said, many other holidaymakers thought it was great so maybe we were just different! Either way we were quite happy to walk.
We couldn't fault the food at this hotel. We are fairly fussy eaters (don't eat red meat) but every evening had a 4 course meal and thoroughly enjoyed it. The added bonus was that there is unlimited lager, wine (red, white and rose), and soft drinks available for with your meal. We are not big drinkers (just the odd glass of wine or lager) but found that this ,combined with afternoon tea and biscuits between 4and 5pm, drastically reduced our holiday spending which was great! Breakfast had all the usual continental stuff with the added bonus of scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, sausages and bacon so no complaints there.
The staff here are also lovely, very friendly but very efficient and the girls on reception were actually more helpful and far more knowledgable than our Thomson rep.
I would advise anyone who wants to travel to other places on the lake to plan ahead. Unfortunately we weren't so good at this and therefore didn't visit as many places as we perhaps would have liked to. It was just a question of synchronising the times of the courtesy bus with the boats. The boats run regularly but you need to plan how long you want to spend at each place and then plan when to catch the courtesy bus so that you can catch the boat and then do it in reverse to return home. There seemed to be certain gaps in both services at certain times of the day which made it a little complicated sometimes.
Also there is a bus stop right outside the hotel and you can get into neighbouring towns quite easily for a couple of euros but you need to be careful about coming back because you can't catch one home again after about 8pm, which is obviously no good for an evening out. You could get a taxi back but this would cost you about 20 euros.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a good quality hotel, with pleasant staff and lovely food but doesn't necessarily want a posh hotel with fancy toiletries!! We really enjoyed it and will definitely be booking up again.
