“Not your typical accommodations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

Our week long apartment stay in the medieval castle, Castel Pietraio gave us the modern comforts of wifi and television in a setting of thick stone walls and beamed ceilings. We found the location perfect to explore the Tuscany region from Volterra to Chianti and down to the hill towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano. Gabrielle took the time to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying our stay at Castel Pietraio. It was a pleasure to open our windows every morning and look out over the beautiful countryside.

Spent two nights. Nicely appointed & very clean. Staff was excellent, especially Franca--she was the highlight of our stay. Enjoyed their wine. Very nice breakfast presentation & service. Good location for the region--very convenient.

The location alone makes this a great place... surrounded by grapes & sunflowers, 10 minutes to Siena and 45 minutes to Florence... add the charm and antiquity of the main castle, the well equipped apartments, the pool surrounded by fragrant lavender, the friendly and accommodating staff and the quaint walled village of Monteriggioni only 2 minutes away and this can't be beat. We've been twice on family holidays, and it's a great place from which to explore Tuscany!

Yes, the place is a bit difficult to find - even with GPS AND a map we had to have the innkeeper direct us via phone. She was charming and helpful, even gave us an impromptu tour (including the dungeon!). The room was terrific and the room was large enough for a nice table where we sat with our wine looking out over the spectacular countryside. Excellent breakfast and great wifi too!

Arrived by rental car using Tomtom - it actually had the castle listed! We had a twin room which was big with a big bathroom. There was reliable WiFi access which was surprising given problems we have had in the main cities. Buffet breakfast to start the day, not to mention the personality which is Gabriella - very friendly and full of useful information to help you plan your Tuscany adventure. We had 5 wonderful days, popping out in the mornings to visit San Gimigniano, Siena, Monteriggione, Pisa...then back to the to relax by the pool and eat the fresh produce, wine and breads we purchased on the way. Fabulous.

Although difficult to find (even by GPS) this location is just excellent! Amidst the famous Toscany countryside the hotel offers all that you can desire. Great location, fine medieval architecture, home made breakfast, friendly personel and easy connections with other famous landmarks (Siena, San Gimigniano etc). It was a romantic place to be and an overall great experience!

This is the place to stay if you want to experience a quiet, old-world setting. The castle grounds are nicely manicured, pool is large, winery is on the grounds. Gabriella will greet you and make sure your stay is memorable. Guest rooms are modern, clean and comfortable. The castle itself is small but stately. Several outdoor seating nooks (some covered) are fabulous for appetizers and wine before dinner. Capucinno with breakfast gets your day off to a good start.
