Excellent value, terrific location, friendly staff, good facilities...Summer Memories was perfect for our first week in Greece!
The resort town of Pefki sits at the bottom of a sheer cliff with several sandy beaches within walking distance. There is no 'old town' but the tidy buildings are small, nothing more than 3-storeys. The abundance of restaurants, shops and tavernas will keep you busy for a week or two. There are no late night clubs and the streets buzz late into the night with families and couples strolling about. Plus you're just off the main east coast road, so you can explore the island by hiring a car or taxi or catching the bus.
It was extrememly economical booking direct through their website, about 280 euros for a week self-catering at the end of September/early October in a 2-room, 4-bed apartment with private balcony and side sea view. Our room was clean and bright and adequately furnished with shower, fridge, kitchenette, cooking utensils plus plenty of storage and chairs. I think A/C was extra, but it wasn't that hot for us to need it. One of the town's best mini markets is right across the street selling fruit & veg, milk, fresh bread...all the essentials, plus cheap booze!
Located a few steps off the town road, the apartments are surrounded by fruit trees--fig, pomegranate, and lemon--all ready to pick when we arrived and full of song birds. On the ground floor under a huge bouganveilla is the bar which does simple meals, English breakfasts, drinks and snacks. Then there is the good-sized pool with sun deck, lots of loungers to catch the sun most all day and a paddling pool for the kiddies. There's no swimming after dark so you won't have rowdiness at night.
There was a mix of retirees, families with children of all ages, gay couples, all mostly English. They promote an easygoing family atmosphere, so no late nights with music pumping out of the bar. There is a karaoke night on Saturdays with all you can eat BBQ & buffet for 10 euro, this catered mainly to pre-teens and their parents and winds up around midnight.
You could happily spend a week here without a car as there are taxis and boats to take you to Lindos about 3 miles up the road, plus there's the regular bus service. The town itself has no sights, but the restuarants were generally very good and inexpensive. Plakia Beach was the cleanest and quietest of the beaches. Our summer memories were happy ones!
