The Caravel Hotel and its resturant, The Coconut Restaurant, well deserve the praising comments written by others in this section. One gets the feeling from the moment of arrival that this hotel has something special that many hotels are lacking and will never have. Both the staff and especially the owners treat their guests as friends, or even family. The atmosphere is always very relaxed and helpful and a there is always time for a genuine smile or chat. This is a hotel and restaurant where the family run the business and the business is the family (all staff included).
The apartments are large, clean and adequetly furnished. Unlike many apartments, where there are simply the bare necessities for a one or two week stay, there has, at the Caravel, been thought put into what the guest needs or may need to make their stay comfortable. What I did find unfortunate was the fact that to the rear of the hotel the building is in progress of an adjacent (neighbouring) hotel extention which eliminates the view from the terrace and most of the days sun. However, during the very hot summer season I can see this as an advantage as it would be very cool during the day and evening. A refuge, if you like. I have no doubt, that if at all possible, one could swop the apartment for one on the street side of the hotel overlooking the pool (just ask "Mama").
A minus was the tv which was very small and fixed to the wall at about 2 meters height in a corner of the kitchen area. Also, there was a lack of english speaking channels.
The service in the restaurant was excellent and all the waiters do a great job of making one feel welcome. They all have a story and make the time to chat if prompted. Prices for meals are very reasonable.
The menu for the evening meal is varied and portions are generous. I personally thought that fewer items on the plate would greatly improve the presentation so if you think there is too much you can always specify exactly what you would like to be served (have the order read back so that there is no doubt). Be sure to try "Mamas" cheesecake, absolutly delightful!
Breakfast in my opinion was somewhat lacking. There was fresh fruit, tomato/cucumber and of course greek yoghurt, but I thought that the processed meat and cheese were very boring and unappetizing.
Despite the small criticisms I have, very nice holiday and all in all, an excellent hotel to stay at whilst on Rhodes. I recommend it.
