“A little rough around the edges but not as scary as reviews would have you believe.”
I'll start by saying this is the first review I've ever posted.
Stayed at the Mare Blue from 10th - 17th October. 2 families age ranges 14 - 54. Please DO NOT be put off by the horrible reviews on here. Having read the reviews posted, we ended up sat in Thomas Cook the day before we were due to travel, absolutely terrified of where we were heading. The travel agency staff were unable to change our accomodation and as a result our holiday started under a cloud.
However, upon arrival at the hotel all our fears were soon put to rest. The rooms (3 in total) were all spotless and this did not slip through the week with towels and linen changed and rooms cleaned EVERY day. We had a pool view room which was superb.
The hotel is extremely understaffed, but the staff that are around were pleasant and worked extremely hard constantly and very long hours. We found that if you were nice to them (as you should be - it's called manners) then you were treated very nicely in return.
In the restaurant yes there was a shortage of glasses and tables may not have been set, but having said that it took a few minutes for that to be resolved, and having a party of 7 large tables were not that readily available but we didn't have an issue at all.
The food was a decent selection and stadard and there was a lot of food on offer however personal choice will always determine a persons opinion of food choice and quality either negatively or positively.
The 2 drink limit was not an issue either, you can only drink 1 at a time! The pool & pool bar were fine, a little rough around the edges but in all ok. Yes the grass was a little long in some areas and sparse in others and could do with tidying up - but is that really the be all and end all of a holiday. The pool water was cold, but aren't most hotel pools? It was cleaned thoroughly daily by the pool guy and the paths around the pool were also hosed daily. You can't blame the staff for other guests that leave their personal items around or on the sunbeds at the end of the day - clear up after yourself!
Desmond and the annimation team did a good job with what they had...........they jollied the activities along and always had a smile and a hello whenever you saw them.
General public arears around the hotel - reception, bar, toilets, terraces etc were all fine, clean and relatively tidy.
You get what you pay for, in Greece remember the star rating is lower than we expect in the UK. I would say that overall we had value for money in comparison to the cost of the holiday.
That's not to say that I would return or reccomend this hotel to friends/family.
As our party found out, you simply can't trust all reveiws. It was not at all as bad as we were expecting and actually gave a sigh of relief when it was realised that things were not so bad.
Don't dwell on the rougher bits - you've worked hard for that holiday remember, so make the best of it.
Going on comments from other guests, the anexe rooms are better than the main building although they...
