I am struck by the stream of extremely positive reviews here. Most of what’s said I agree with, but felt there are a few negatives you need to weigh up to judge whether this is the right place for you.
The suites are lovely, bright, modern, well laid out. We were pleased to be upgraded to a plunge pool suite ( there seem to be more with than without pool so it’s a good bet, though the lowest level with pools probably have less of a view than the level without pools which are higher up).
Generous large fruit bowl and wine on arrival, various food and drink items arrive daily with water. Big bottles of Bulgari toiletries in a well laid out bathroom with separate shower and 2 basins.
Newspapers and some snacks available in the Suites reception daily, so we used those as a light lunch option , read the papers and were able to skip paying for a lunch. Good breakfast with cooked to order hot food.
There is a separate black tiled pool for the Suites, the most modern and best for swimming laps, and as its black its slightly warmer than the others. But the seating area around it feels a bit of a pen and is not well maintained. We preferred the main hotel adults only pool which was never busy.
As our package contained a free upgrade to half board in the Varkarola restaurant I wasn’t too cost critical, but I’d judge it as very good for mass market resort catering rather than truly at an international 5 star level of food. It does pall a bit by the end of a whole week and doesn’t have much Greek feel.
This is not a separate small boutique hotel though tries to emulate one. You never quite overcome the big ugly old fashioned concrete main Amathus hotel which you are attached to, unless you stay in your suite. The main hotel is dull and unattractive. We used the buffet once for a change of scene for dinner but regretted it, as it was the worst kind of mass market buffet with overheated overcooked vats of bland unappealing fare.
End of season and it shows. The upkeep is lacking as they are about to close. The elite suite sitting and pool area has got muddy and much of the grass eroded and not tended. The wooden decking is splitting and badly needs fixing and restaining. The staff numbers are hugely reduced due to falling guest numbers, so glasses aren’t collected and you see staff offering drinks very infrequently.
The beach was a big disappointment. The ‘sandy beach ' they have tried to add to the stones has become a muddy area, then you have big pebbles to negotiate to reach the water. The separate Suites sitting area is right in front of the road in the most noisy location so you certainly won’t want to sit in it. Before we left the staff were dismantling all the main loungers from their stretch of beach, making it unusable anyway.
There are no viable walks from the hotel. You can only walk on the busy main road and there’s nowhere attractive along either direction, just closing up cafes and inferior looking hotels and apartments. We missed the option of morning/evening walks which we have enjoyed from other beach hotels elsewhere. You need to be content to stay in the resort or catch a bus/cab to somewhere more scenic.
The restaurant entertainment was painfully inept. Recorded music would be better than the ill tuned singer pianist who played as many wrong as right notes. Once was funny, but nightly got wearing. The widely advertised special theme nights are cancelled at end of season, although the tv channel in room and in all the main hotel lifts still promotes them and on check in we were told the barbecue night was on - it wasn't, but we weren't informed.
We found the spa hugely disappointing. We don’t go for individual treatments but do usually like to use the communal facilities like pool, Jacuzzi, sauna etc which look good in the brochures. We thought the pool dingy and it looks out to the backside of the drink and snack serving pool bar, hardly the calming holistic sense the clever pictures give. The Jacuzzi was tepid and has no handrail so it’s pretty tricky getting in and out. One sauna was out of order and the other had a v dangerous exposed hot brazier with glowing red elements in a poor state of order placed very close to where you may sit. The ugly sign stuck to the door ordering you to keep the door shut looked tacky too. The changing rooms are stupidly placed so your naked self is exposed to passers by whenever anyone opens the door. And the locker keys wouldn’t work so people were leaving their things in open lockers which didn’t feel entirely safe. We didn’t go a second time as it just didn’t have a nice feel at all.
The main road may or may not bother you. The suites with garden area would be worst affected as they are closest to the road. It can be heard from the main pools and sitting areas , especially from the beach which is a great shame. You judge if it would bother you. I wouldn’t want to pick a hotel with a busy road so close between hotel and beach again. It detracts from the attempt to create the sense of luxury and seclusion which the suites are aiming at.
I suspect this and the mediocre main hotel which looms over the suites is why the other 2 Amathus hotels in Cyprus are designated as Leading Hotels of the World but this one isn’t.
So it’s good in many ways, but geographical factors which the hotel can’t do much about, and upkeep issues which it can, mean its 4 stars not quite 5 from me. Maybe in full season the staffing and upkeep are better. It did have a clear feel of closing up shop as the charter flights stop at the end of October although it was still very hot.
Higher up levels for better view. Lowest level with gardens will get road noise
