My girlfriend and I absolutely loved our two night stay and consider it one of the highlights of our 3 week trip in Spain and France. Mikel, our host, was exceedingly welcoming and made us feel at home very quickly. The home itself, a three story stone farmhouse, has been restored with love over several decades by Mikel. The home is comfortable, relaxing, and authentic -- just what we were looking for in our stay in the Basque countryside. It was a little cloudy while we were there, limiting our views of the surrounding hills and valleys, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
Mikel is an excellent chef. He cooked our breakfasts and dinners each day, and we wish we could have his grandmother's traditional Basque recipes. The first night we had a delicious sheep's milk soup, chicken braised in a prune port sauce, and cinnamon poached pears with decadent chocolate. The second night we had a warm potato & hake salad, followed by impeccable hake steaks, and a sheep's milk curd dessert. Oh, and delicious Rioja and liquors flowed freely both nights. When we left, Mikel even insisted we take an extra bottle of Rioja for the road! Breakfasts were tasty as well, if more traditionally European -- breads, croissants, james, cheeses, jamons, etc. Mikel makes a mean simple egg omelet -- it's all about the super high quality olive oil.
Overall, we were looking to experience Basque culture outside of the big cities of San Sebastian, Pamplona, and Bilbao, and that's exactly what we got here. Ametzola is about a 25 minute drive from Bilbao, making it a great base for exploring the area. Our Garmin GPS (and our iphone's google maps) had the home located correctly, something we found to not always be the case during our trip...
Some other notes -- wifi was easy to access from our room. Shower had good pressure. Our double size bed was memory foam topped & very comfortable. There's no A/C but it's totally unneccessary here -- even if it's warm during the day, it cools off a lot at night and keeping a window cracked kept us comfortable. Mikel knows everything about the surrounding area; he drew us a quick map to get to a delicious lunch spot in a nearby town and to directions to some nearby sights. From the house there are also some very nice walks. We walked to the top of the closest "mountain" from our doorstep which took about 1.5hrs roundtrip.
