“Fantastic little place in the middle of nowhere.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Wow, what a surprise gem this was. We arrived mid afternoon and this stop was a break from the long journey between Udaipur and Jaipur. i have to confess to a moment of worry when we got out of the van and had to walk down a cobbled path to the hotel which looked relatively plain from the outside............but from the moment we arrived we were so well looked after it was amazing. The rooms were beautiful and our 12 year old got her own room as they had no foldaway beds so she was very happy! Lunch was served on the front veranda overlooking a little lake, fixed menu which was a bit of a worry as I had been very cautious with the food. However it was fantastic, tasty and fresh and many different selections to taste. The pool was lovely to cool off and then we did a jeep safari which took us into local farming villages and a temple complete with afternoon tea on a rug. Dinner was set by the pool with lanterns and candlelight and similar to lunch with a fixed menu of many selections of Indian cuisine and all perfect. We were the only guests and the host and his staff were very friendly and took great care of us. Nice touch was the evening room service which left a flower and chocolates on the bed for us after dinner :)

I only stayed one night at this small rural boutique hotel, but it was one of the highlights of my holiday. The hotel is located in a nature reserve about a 15 minute drive through the cumin fields from the village of Jojawar. It really is very isolated, but perfect for getting away from it all.

The hotel was an old hunting lodge, but has just been converted into a very luxurious hotel. The mix of old and new gives it character, but also means the plumbing works and the air-con is quiet. Our room was very large, with a giant bed, a seating area, and a balcony. There was a large en-suite with bath and walk-in shower, two sinks, and a lot of marble. I think the owners said there are only ten rooms in all.

We arrived at lunchtime, and being in the middle of nowhere the hotel restaurant was the only option for food. At first we were a little worried as there were no menus. Instead, a variety of dishes just started to arrive. First there was a soup, that was followed by a large selections of dals, curries, breads, vegetable dishes, then finally Indian desserts. All were delicious.

Following lunch, the hotel staff suggested we take a ride in the hills. Two staff accompanied us. It was partly in the back of an open top 4x4, and partly on a train. The views in the hills were very impressive, and we got lots of opportunities to feed monkeys and photograph peacocks. There was a break halfway through the trip - a picnic basket was produced and tea in china cups served (Assam or Earl Grey). It was a bit surreal, but very sweet.

We got back to the hotel just in time to enjoy a gin and tonic whilst watching the sun go down. We then sat by the pool and chatted to the owners. It had become apparent we were the only ones staying there that night. Even so the staff couldn’t do enough for us. They set up a dinning table outside so we could dine under the stars and lit the area with candles. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many stars in my life, certainly an amazing place to eat. Again dinner was served without a menu. Lot of dishes, all very good.

I really wish I had been able to spend longer at Kesar Bagh. It felt like such an oasis of calm.
