“Nearly as good as reviewed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Key features - good location, excellent staff and especially on reception, pleasant rooms, small town and restaurants within easy walking distance, beach OK for sunbathing and perhaps a cool off (and brilliant for small children) but the hotel's bit is only some 40 yards long (and 6 yards deep) and the sea no more than 4 ft deep until you wade out for 60 yards or so (and so we tended to drive off to small bays of which there are plenty).

Hotel pool looked pleasant - but might, for a 4 star hotel, soon do with an upgrade from the traditional hard concrete sided surround to something more 'lapping'. Similarly rooms one day soon but currently OK (though we really could not see how there might have been room for an extra bed or bunks as advertised).

The only downside for us was, unfortunately, the dinner - but we only tried it once and just might have been unlucky. It was, as we remarked to one of the managers (or could have been owner) more like hotel food rather than restaurant food. Slightly bland and main course as if it might have been re-heated (too much). When we did (very courteously) comment they seemed shocked and suggested that we might try again or try the slightly superior Blu restaurant outdoors - but as we thought once bitten twice shy and more expensive than eating simply out and it was not clear if they were offering us any incentives, we did not risk it.

Other than that, pretty nice all round. A few package groups, who were eating separately. And might have done with a bit of life (or even quiet music) after dinner when most seemed to disappear. Quite a traditional hotel (waiters in smart white jackets and a Maitre 'D). Did hear that they had become now part of a group (with Su Gologone where food is wonderful). Trust they will keep their personal touches and feel.

Room Tip: People gasp about a seaview but they are much more expensive and if you are on a budget it is a nice...

“A very special place!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

We received a very warm welcome on arrival at the Gabbiano Azzurro.

The staff were warm and friendly and acknowledged our 25th anniversary at check-in as we had previously arranged to have dinner at their outdoor terrace restaurant.

Aside from the hotel being lovely, we picked it so that we would be close to the ferry in Olbia that takes you to and from the mainland which is a 5 hour journey. We stayed one night on the way in so we would have a special place to celebrate our 25th and then three nights prior to our departure to ensure good memories upon leaving Sardinia. (Sardegna).

It is a large family run hotel that exudes a casual elegance with comfortable sofas in the lobby, beautiful outdoor furniture on the terrace and sumptuous chaises with thick cushions around the pool.

We enjoyed sitting in the terrace and having a drink. Guests often meet here before dinner.
Ahhh...nothing like having a gin and tonic around the pool on a hot day either!! We enjoyed all our meals at their al a carte Blu restaurant overlooking the sea.

The restaurant indoors is for those using the pension plan. It looked like it may have been a good value with large antipasto and dessert buffets. We opted for the Blu mainly for the enjoyment of eating on the terrace with its lovely view over the bay with stunningly beautiful blue water.

Their breakfast which ranks in our top 5 in Italy and France is served on the terrace. Any hotel that has fresh cut fruit salad rises to the top for us and the Gabbiano went way above that. Their entire breakfast buffet was exceptional in its quality and variety.

We ate lunch at the little restaurant near the beach where you can either get a panino to take back to one of the sun beds you can reserve (with a fee during high season) on their private beach. We opted to have grilled calamari and salads with the requisite bottle of wine on the little outdoor terrace by the beach.

All are meals were delicious!

Our Superior Double room was very comfortable with a fabulous view of the sea and islands. The room was a comfortable size and decorated as you would expect at a resort.

The hotel will book boat excursions for you to the north or southern islands or other activities.

The town of Golfo Aranci where the hotel is located is the nicest we saw on the Costa Smeralda. The hotel is situated on the edge of town and walking into the centre is very easy. The Costa Smeralda is Sardegna's most expensive region of the island being that it is the summer playground of the rich and famous. The Gabbiano Azzurro is a very good value when this is taken into account and even more so if staying in the off season. The water is quite shallow so the water should be warm enough April to the end of October.

Olbia is the closest port to the mainland and Golfo Aranci is an easy 20 minute drive to the ferry. There is also an airport there. We took both the Tirrenia and Moby ferries and both were fine but Moby was our preferred. I would suggest that you book directly with the ferry companies and not through an agent. We did not reserve seats and instead found comfortable seats in their bars for the trip.

A stay at the Gabbiano Azzurro is highly recommended!!

“Lovely hotel in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Just returned from a second trip to this hotel - everything still as good as the first time we stayed there. Staff are excellent. They were all very helpful- nothing was any trouble to them. All the guests are made so welcome.

Room Tip: Overlooking the bay for beautiful views

“Fantastic holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We stayed at the hotel in September, for our second visit. The hotel is in a superb location on the bay with the sea on three sides. Staff are always friendly & helpful. Food is wonderful from the buffet breakfast to dinner. Rooms are kept very clean at all times. We cannot fault the hotel at all. Close to the airport & an easy drive to nearby sights.

Room Tip: Always choose a sea view.

“Outstanding service in family-owned hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

The Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro is a family-run hotel which has been in the same family for the past 40 years. They really do their best for their guests. Tullio, one of the family members, has been a great help for us when our 8 months old daughter got sick. He arranged an appointment with a local pediatrician for us (at 11 p.m.) and during the consultation, he translated the conversation for us over the phone. In Sardinia, most of the people don't speak English. So, his help was critical to us! Thanks again for that, Tullio.
