“A very special place!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

We received a very warm welcome on arrival at the Gabbiano Azzurro.

The staff were warm and friendly and acknowledged our 25th anniversary at check-in as we had previously arranged to have dinner at their outdoor terrace restaurant.

Aside from the hotel being lovely, we picked it so that we would be close to the ferry in Olbia that takes you to and from the mainland which is a 5 hour journey. We stayed one night on the way in so we would have a special place to celebrate our 25th and then three nights prior to our departure to ensure good memories upon leaving Sardinia. (Sardegna).

It is a large family run hotel that exudes a casual elegance with comfortable sofas in the lobby, beautiful outdoor furniture on the terrace and sumptuous chaises with thick cushions around the pool.

We enjoyed sitting in the terrace and having a drink. Guests often meet here before dinner.
Ahhh...nothing like having a gin and tonic around the pool on a hot day either!! We enjoyed all our meals at their al a carte Blu restaurant overlooking the sea.

The restaurant indoors is for those using the pension plan. It looked like it may have been a good value with large antipasto and dessert buffets. We opted for the Blu mainly for the enjoyment of eating on the terrace with its lovely view over the bay with stunningly beautiful blue water.

Their breakfast which ranks in our top 5 in Italy and France is served on the terrace. Any hotel that has fresh cut fruit salad rises to the top for us and the Gabbiano went way above that. Their entire breakfast buffet was exceptional in its quality and variety.

We ate lunch at the little restaurant near the beach where you can either get a panino to take back to one of the sun beds you can reserve (with a fee during high season) on their private beach. We opted to have grilled calamari and salads with the requisite bottle of wine on the little outdoor terrace by the beach.

All are meals were delicious!

Our Superior Double room was very comfortable with a fabulous view of the sea and islands. The room was a comfortable size and decorated as you would expect at a resort.

The hotel will book boat excursions for you to the north or southern islands or other activities.

The town of Golfo Aranci where the hotel is located is the nicest we saw on the Costa Smeralda. The hotel is situated on the edge of town and walking into the centre is very easy. The Costa Smeralda is Sardegna's most expensive region of the island being that it is the summer playground of the rich and famous. The Gabbiano Azzurro is a very good value when this is taken into account and even more so if staying in the off season. The water is quite shallow so the water should be warm enough April to the end of October.

Olbia is the closest port to the mainland and Golfo Aranci is an easy 20 minute drive to the ferry. There is also an airport there. We took both the Tirrenia and Moby ferries and both were fine but Moby was our preferred. I would suggest that you book directly with the ferry companies and not through an agent. We did not reserve seats and instead found comfortable seats in their bars for the trip.

A stay at the Gabbiano Azzurro is highly recommended!!

Just returned from a second trip to this hotel - everything still as good as the first time we stayed there. Staff are excellent. They were all very helpful- nothing was any trouble to them. All the guests are made so welcome.

Room Tip: Overlooking the bay for beautiful views

We stayed at the hotel in September, for our second visit. The hotel is in a superb location on the bay with the sea on three sides. Staff are always friendly & helpful. Food is wonderful from the buffet breakfast to dinner. Rooms are kept very clean at all times. We cannot fault the hotel at all. Close to the airport & an easy drive to nearby sights.

Room Tip: Always choose a sea view.

The Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro is a family-run hotel which has been in the same family for the past 40 years. They really do their best for their guests. Tullio, one of the family members, has been a great help for us when our 8 months old daughter got sick. He arranged an appointment with a local pediatrician for us (at 11 p.m.) and during the consultation, he translated the conversation for us over the phone. In Sardinia, most of the people don't speak English. So, his help was critical to us! Thanks again for that, Tullio.

Hotel was good not great. Hotel rooms are OK make sure you get one facing Isola Tavolara. Staff are pleasant and helpful, always helps if you can speak a little Italian. Agree with the other reviewers that the hotel is in a good location, it's close to Olbia airport, the pool was nice, views good, breakfast good. If you want somewhere reliable and you're happy to explore during the day by car then stay here - it's a good place to base yourself.

That said for me after a full week exploring the area there are better places to stay. Nothing against the hotel I just think that Golfo Aranci is not the best area - if I had my time over I would stay somewhere with views closer to Porto Cervo, Cappricioli, Palau area or La Madalena.

Enjoyed staying at this hotel, although it was a little disappointing to be at the back of the hotel and not overlooking the bay. Nevertheless the public rooms and the swimming pool area are lovely spots to sit in. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The meals were very good, with a good choice of menu for dinner and an extensive buffet breakfast.
I would agree with another reviewer that the single beds were rather narrow, but apart from that the room was large, also the bathroom and everywhere was kept scrupulously clean.
I would certainly love to stay there again, but would like a room overlooking the sea next time..

My husband and I just returned this week from a 6 night stay at Hotel Gabbiano Azzuro (we are in our late 20s). Overall this was a wonderful place. They are right on a beautiful beach with sandy bottoms - though it is rather shallow so popular with families. It is also a good location to get to the airport of Olbia.

The staff was very friendly. We only did B&B, so we ate at their outdoor restaurant for dinner a few nights. This was delicious food - pricey but worth it - with a wonderful view of the sunset over the beach. Very romantic place.

The one "downside" is their hairdryer was awful (I am using downside very loosely here). This is a very small thing, but in case others want to know about the amenities I figured I would include it. It only emitted really high heat (no air with it), so it felt like I was holding a toaster up to my head and frying my hair. Though it really wasn't a big deal - I just went on the balcony with the amazing view and let my hair air dry, but that was a bit surprising with everything else so great.

Room Tip: I chose the compact room with a sea view, and it was a great view (as shown in the photo)
