“Glamping....nearly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

I should have read the small print. You're own bell tent, off the ground, all equipment supplied, compost toilet and warm showers. Perfect for a romantic glamping get away - or so I thought. The clue was in the name - this was truly back to basics and I loved every minute of it. The on site manager could not have been more lovely, helping us to schlep all our gear from the carpark and down the hill. He gave us a little tour of the site and left us to it. An open fire, your own woodburning kettle and stand, logs a plenty, water on tap and the space to breath. This is back to basics but perfectly manageable. We don't have kids and wanted some peace - our tent was away from the main community hub where families were hanging out. Eco-camp have got the right balance of appreciating the needs of their punters and keeping true to their earthy principals.

Great place to stay. Highly recommend. The owners are lovely and made sure we knew where everything was. Lovely relaxing place to stay for the weekend. Will definitely be back (this time with more marshmallows for the campfire).

This is a wonderful place to stay - within minutes of arriving you feel relaxed.

It was my first experience of "glamping" and I think I see what all the fuss is about. Having a tent you can stand up in and a bed to sleep in makes the whole thing a lot more civilised! Everything at the campsite is really well organised, with all the cooking equipment provided, which makes it all easy.

The best part is the campfire - when I got home all my clothes still smelled of smoke. And the steam train going past the site also makes you feel like you're in a film.

We went to the Sloop Inn for dinner one night and enjoyed it - good food and friendly, helpful staff.

The only potential drawback I can think of is if you're afraid of cows, as you have to walk through a field of them, and they're definitely not afraid of people (or cars, which they like to lick).

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Wild Boar Wood Campsite offers campers real off-grid woodland camping in our pre-erected Bell Tents. (For tent pitches and more bell tents please go to our Beech Estate Woodland Campsite page) The nine fully equipped Bell Tents are set in a beautiful campsite with open campfires, within a five acre bluebell wood in the heart of Sussex. Our woodland campsite is located in the High Weald, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Bell Tents offer a unique, off-grid, holiday 'eco-camping' experience and are set apart in the trees giving solitude and privacy from the outside world. The camp is located in West Sussex near Haywards Heath, close to London, Brighton and Ashdown Forest. Wild Boar Wood Campsite offers an opportunity to camp side by side with nature, whilst enjoying the comfort of our tents, with beds, cooking equipment, open fire bbq grill and a firewood allocation. It's off-grid camping made easy! We prefer not to label our fully equipped bell tents as "glamping" as we have no butler service, silk sheets or hot tubs. Rather we provide a real camping experience made easy, with just about all the camping equipment you should need, all set-up and waiting for you in a lovely campsite in the woods. We have a permanent warden onsite to assist our campers at all times. The campsite is ideal for families and groups, to reconnect and renew friendships, or chat with fellow campers around the campfire. Full campsite bookings are also available for that special celebration. The two 'faraway' tents offer a more secluded option, tucked away from the main campsite, for couples and families wanting their own space. Wild Boar Wood and its surrounding 40 acre field teem with wildlife; birds, butterflies, deer, rabbit, hedgehogs and foxes make their homes in the field, hedgerows and woodland. Close by the woodland campsite, the River Ouse meanders through the countryside, offering delightful and scenic walks along its banks to the welcoming local hostelries. The peace and tranquillity is interrupted only by the historic and spectacular Bluebell Railway locomotives as they occasionally thunder past the edge of the woodland campsite! We operate a small scale quiet, relaxed and laid back campsite. We don't allow amplified music and have a low noise policy from 10 pm in the evenings. Dogs are not allowed to protect the native flora and fauna. We have an area for car parking which is a walk away across the field. Cars may not be driven to your pitch. We aim to provide camping in the woods not in a car park. Wheelbarrows are provided to move your equipment to the pitch (and the warden will assist if you need it). It may be a 5 minute walk - but it's worth it once you set up not to have cars in the campsite. Much safer for children as well! As we state we don't offer "Glamping" in our Bell Tents - but rather a real, off-grid camping experience in the woods. The local Council, as part of our permission to operate within the woods in an AONB, dictates our site facilities, their size, our infrastructure and the amenities we may offer. Keeping every item we provide in our bell tents in mint condition in a woodland is difficult. Using resources for their full lifespan is our ethos and a necessary practise in our small business. We endeavour to provide clean, practical equipment and facilities, within the confines of our planning permission and the environment in which we operate. ... more   less
